Title: Visiting Northampton next week, any must visits?
Post by: ThePerilsOfDan on 14 Sep 2022, 06:40
I'm heading to Northampton MA next week to pick up an amplifier.  Any must visit locations?  I'm curious as to what may have inspired Jeph when he was here, if I'm given to understand that he actually did reside here at one time or another.

I spent a year living in Amherst across the river. Places I'd recommend in the area though not exclusive to Northampton.

1.) Atkins Farms Market

2.) Yankee Candle Factory Store

3.) Pasta E Basta

If you like trains, in Palmer MA, the Steaming Tender is a great place to eat and watch CSX and NECR trains go by.

If you find the coffee shop that inspired Coffee of Doom, please post a photo!

Perhaps look at some the strips and find analogs, of say, Marten's and Fayes apartment house.  See if there is a Union street.  Photos of college library's.  My guess is that locations in the strip were based on real places.  Just be sure to obscure the actual addresses.

There is a bar called The Dirty Truth https://www.dirtytruthbeerhall.com/ which I think is the model for the Horrible Revelation.

You def have to visit the real Smith College. https://www.smith.edu/

There is a Union street but it's residential.

Main, Elm, State and New South streets are pretty busy.

Sadly, I can tell you from the last time I was there that if "the gay nightclub on Pleasant" was what I think it was, it no longer exists.

Basically, all I remember about Northampton was a big mall in the center of town and a nominal veterans' club open to the public where I used to play poker, although I think the state's cracked down on that sort of thing.  Technically, Florence, on the far side of Smith, is part of Northampton, although I barely believe it - when I was there, there was a vegan café that was cute but awful, and another bar with another poker game.

Oh!  Bela, if they still exist - they have the best vegan chocolate cake!  Trust me, feed it to anyone - it tastes so clean compared to the so-called "real" thing.

Herrells Ice cream?
Thorne’s Marketplace
Pleasant St Theater
Smith College Museum of Art
Pinocchio Pizza Express (it’s not good but I think it’s been in a strip?)
Northampton Public Library is very cute
La Veracruzana

There’s a really cute store with quirky room decor but idk if it’s still around, as well as a record store with good vinyl
