Title: WCDT Nov 21st - Nov 25th (strips #4921 to #4925)
Post by: Gyrre on 20 Nov 2022, 21:51
Wow, when was the last time the last two digits of the strip numbers for the week fully aligned with the days of the month they were in?

Yes, I'm sure their illegality will be a great deterrent to the murder drones.

Then again, it is Canada.  They might stop and politely apologize.

Also, I actually believe that maybe for the AIs (who seem to employ murder drones quite casually), it's just a thing that never occured to them. You know, that murder drones are not the thing to employ in polite company.
So, if they employ them, they would go to Robot Jail. Nobody wants into Robot Jail.

Plot twist: It is Pintsize, back in his old (or similar) chassis, with some kind of prank in mind for Marten and Claire...  :-D

While I'm sure the mother in that last panel is meant as a joke in a reference to a brother coming parenting practice, too bad she didn't try it from a different angle. One thing I find quite odd is how often someone claims something is rude simply because it makes them uncomfortable to think about or to admit that they don't know or understand. E.I. it's more rude that you're pointing it out to them, not the person that's being pointed at.

She's most likely made of Jello, not slime. Slime drips all over the place and leaves a trail. No dripping. Can't verify the lack of trail, however.. Still, it would be bad form for an employee of any company or institution to leave a slime trail; even in Canada. Though a poutine trail might be acceptable.

Sorry, I made that on the last break of a 12 hour shift ([sarcasm] yay holiday schedules).

The mom in that last panel didn't explain the 'why' to her son[1], so her reasoning was ambiguous [2]. The second part was a very rambly way of me saying I still don't understand a large chunk of what normies consider 'rude'[3]. In my own personal experience, sometimes the 'rude' thing makes someone uncomfortable (like if it makes them confront their own mortality). Accomodation stuff usually makes sense but admittedly has to be pointed out sometimes[4].

[1] a common parenting mistake my generation experienced
[2] I know it was a setup for the postscript joke.
[3] Things that are inconsiderate or a matter of personal safety (like not outting someone) are easy to grok as being rude so long as I'm not too stuck in my own head that day.
[4] Only recently learned about the fake movie tumblr users are creating called Goncharov, and saw a post requesting that posts for it be tagged with 'unreality' for the sake of users with psychosis (https://amajorsystem.tumblr.com/post/701409861235343360).

I am beginning to think that a swarm of nanobots suspended in a viscous fluid barely contained in a thin membrane might not be the ideal body to choose for oneself.

I know that I already replied to this, but I was thinking more about the subject.  There are plenty of meatbags walking around this world who seem to almost spontaneously start leaking if allowed around anything sharp, and I must admit that Iím sometimes one of them.  Then again, we didnít get any choice in the matter, but we do rather odd things for the sake of fashion or just ďcoolĒ that are just as daft.

And thinking more about Morayís chassis, the membrane probably such that with sufficient goo pressure/viscosity, she is able to retain enough rigidity to even stand, but if itís flexible enough for her to really move around at all, she probably does move in a rather odd manner.

Kevinís mom: ďCan you get the lime jello from the fridge?Ē
Kevin can only blush embarrassedly. Mom sighs and goes to the fridge. ďKevinÖ WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE JELLO?!Ē
Kevin blushes even harder. And thus Kevin starts on a journey to getting married to a jello being 20 years later.

Because turkey day, here's some biography facts about Tisquantum ("Squanto") you may not have learned about in school. (Copy/pasted because I'm lazy)

(click to show/hide)

TL;DR: Tisquantum and Samoset spent part of their 20s escaping a Spanish monastery and making their way back to England to catch a boat ride back home only to find Squanto's people had died off. The Pilgrims made landfall soon after, and Tisquantum earned a sainthood keeping themselves from getting themselves killed for being too British (some diaries mention digging up burial mounds and stealing grave goods).

I think that the funny part of it is the idea of a self-aware killer robot that it is easy to stop from hurting people (literally just "Dude, no, you don't need to kill them!") and then is able to discuss with their potential victim why being not allowed to hurt someone makes them feel devalued as people. The joke is in the ridiculous idea of a neurotic killing machine that feels that it is being prevented from doing what it was meant to do because kill-drones are very unpopular and then agonises about it to its potential victim. The humour is in the ludicrous nature of the whole scenario and ensuing discussion.

Douglas Adams basically wrote a very similar sketch (but with biological protagonists) in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe with the two space cops who whine about the bad reputation that they automatically have to put up with for being cops (whilst, simultaneously, showing them revelling in their ability to kill with impunity).

I donít know whatís worse, deliberately making a kill-bot, or making one thatís self-aware and then taking away its raison dí etre.  Then again, my own sense of humour is dark enough that, particularly with the quality of my handwriting, itís a pity that I never was a good enough student to go into medicine.

Speaking of which, Iím reminded of a time where I was serving coffee, and handing a ďbaby latteĒ[1] to a middle-aged lady, and I quipped that I ground up the baby nice and fresh that morning.  She levels a death glare at me and snaps ďIím a paediatrician!Ē.  Just as Iím starting to wish that I had worn the brown trousers to work that day, she cracks a smile and says ďdo you want to hear some dead baby jokes?Ē.

Itís just a pity that she had already paid, since Iíve never, before nor since had a customer get one over on me like that, and that would have warranted me paying for it out of the tip jar.

[1] Thus called because it was in an off-menu size for lattes, being served in a double espresso/macchiato[2] cup

I'm saying this respectfully, but you can't say that anything is "not funny. Ever." Because that's you policing what other people think, and that shit's dangerous. The joke IS funny, to most people here because it's an absurd joke, within the context of this ABSURD COMIC. CONTEXT. No one here is advocating robots killing people. It's called nuance. Your attitude of thinking you get to proclaim something not funny EVER because you don't like the joke, is why and how censorship happens and is the reason there is so much hate against literally everything in this world right now. In your world, comedians would have to edit themselves to death every time they got on stage for fear of being cancelled, and nothing would be safe to talk about, EVER. CONTEXT.

And, that joke opened up the opportunity for you to share that link, which I read and now am horrified about and am more informed. You are allowed to have opinions, and there are respectful ways to express them. If that joke hadn't been made you wouldn't have shared the link because Jeph wouldn't have been "allowed" to joke about it. But he did and now I'm more informed. You see? But you can't police what is funny, because then we would live in a police state, which by your link I know you don't want. THINK ABOUT IT. Opinions and freedom of speech: GOOD. Telling other people what they should think: BAD.

 Cyber yeti was quicker to type. Also, pretty sure the 'stick men' are up that way too. At least in western Canada if I recall correctly.

Sidebar; there's a joke amongst those married in on my dad's side of the family that all of the bigfoot sightings are just some of my extended family getting caught skinny dipping.

EDIT: Excuse me, they're colloquially called 'stick indians' in English due to the taboo of even saying the name of them. They're like sasquatch but evil. http://www.native-languages.org/morelegends/stick-indians.htm

EDIT 2: fun fact: sasquatch is supposed to be pronounced "sess-k-uts" in  Halkomelem, Coast Salish, Squamish, Sto:lo, and Cowichan.

That might depend on how much sheís a daily presence in Claireís work life.  I had one boss who would probably have driven me to walk out (he could be a bit of a harsh perfectionist) if I had to see him on a regular basis.  But I was hired to work at the other store, where he sent people he never wanted to see again but didnít want to sack, so we had an excellent work relationship.

Oh boy, more bouncy tits.
Now that you pointed it out, Moray's body does seem like one way to vary from the standard AIs, who presumably do not have the bounciest of tits. (Do they? I'm not actually going to do the searching I'd need to remember if, for instance, May's new breasts bounce.)

mmmm, does not seem "bouncy" could be reserved for any single portion of Moray's anatomy :}

Welcome, bobbygoodson!

In 4858, Moray introduces herself as 'Moray-X21', leading me to believe that she is the 21st in a series of experimental 2m. tall humanoid sentient protozoa. So she is artifically intelligent, but not a mechanical AI. And currently holding the position of 'Director of Sentient Resources'. I wonder if we'll get to see any of her sisters?

( they will be even more bizarre )

But should people think that "telling other people what they should think" is good?

No. There's at least one famous/infamous dystopian novel about that (and other things) being bad

Damn Moray is cute tho.

For some reason I immediately pictured her in a cute anime sundress and floppy sunhat when I read that

Yeti donít live on other continents.

Don't worry, I'm aware the hypothetical biological variety is strictly located in the Himalayas. Like I said; being lazy.

Besides, what's stopping a QC AI from adopting a yeti model chassis and immigrating to northern North America? They'd be well suited to the winters.

One could even say it's doubleplus ungood.

I think there's a possibility that Moray is excited. I don't know, more research needed.

TBH I was mostly asking to be annoying.
