Title: QC Forum Alternatives Discussion
Post by: Jimor on 30 Nov 2022, 18:26
I think moving discussion about this to its own thread will allow the announcement threads about it to remain fairly uncluttered for Jeph to be able to read and respond to things directed at him much more easily if he desires.

If you know of already active places where QC is discussed, feel free to share. Like I said in the other thread, I know of at least one fairly active discussion about the comic happening on the Order of the Stick webcomic forum, and there may be others as well. ( https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?645291-Questionable-Content-XVIII-quot-That-s-only-sort-of-good-news-quot )

And Faridah has mentioned a QC Discord server (https://discord.gg/7gH7HPj) started by people from the QC Reddit community, which I guess also warrants a mention:
https://www.reddit.com/r/QContent (The one associated with the Discord)
https://www.reddit.com/r/questionablecontent/ (another one)

Any others?

And as far as creating a new Discord Server, I think functionally, it's probably where we can create the closest to what we already have here, with a similar array of topics. And with opt-in roles, it would also be possible to hide away the political/more serious discussions only to those who voluntarily wish to partake.

And I kind of doubt the current Discord admin team would be keen on adding a bunch of stuff just for a bunch of newcomers. Best tack, IMO, to take if you join them is to take their community for what it is, see if you like it, but don't try to force our culture on them unless it's clear it's welcome.

That's what I can think of for now. I think I will also create one more thread specifically for those that wish to share *personal* social media link or are open to DMs about making connections.

Hi! I believe that's the wrong Reddit community, though it certainly is *a* Reddit that people could join if they like. The one that's associated with the Discord is /r/QContent. I'm sure there's some overlap between them (I've only lurked), but also there's a lot of bad blood.

Thanks, added above and clarified!

And of course there are different QC tribes on Reddit, :-P

If people are interested, I would be happy to setup 'our very own' Discord server, where we can control things ourselves?

Post it here.  I might not be comfortable with a lot of participation, but it might be worth popping in from time to time to post fluff and one-liners.

i think it would be well worth it!!  discords are intriguing in being a blend of message board and chat room.

If it is not set up in time for the forums closing, as far as i can tell from the idea in Jeph's post about the forums being kept online as read-only, i am guessing there would be a way to edit in a link to the discord!

As I understand, administrators will still be able to make edits even after the freeze.

That is correct; but there would need to be a way to contact an admin away from the forum first.

Discord does allow dedicated forum-style threads as well, these days. We could migrate to a discord and set up the channels like the sub-forums here. I've had a bit of a play about with one and it looks like it could be fairly straightforward to do.

That looks great :) I have started setting up a new Discord, but haven't had much time to dedicate to it. Also, any volunteers to be moderators?

You can't make thread channels without making the server a community server (E: oh, and you might need to fully close and reopen your Discord client before it properly takes in the UI). That doesn't necessarily make it public or discoverable, or really anything else as far as I can see, so I'm not sure why it's gated behind that. Them's the rules, I guess? :/

Though I'd like to contribute somehow, I know from experience running a forum in a past life that I get far too stressed-out if I have to tell people to knock it off (but strangely enough I don't have that reaction if it's in-person) so I don't know if I'd make a good moderator. But if I can help in some other way (not sure what else there is involved in running a Discord server, tbh) let me know and I'll try my best.

I think it would work without official mods for some time, if they could not be determined before the forum closes. That is, if our discord is not discoverable it will simply be people from here and anyone invited they would already know to not be troublesome!! :) :)

I've barely been on here for a long time so I suppose I can't really complain about it being switched off. But quite large feelings.

That said, I've just started using Discord so I would be totally up for using that to keep in touch with everyone. Honestly, it might be nice to see if any of the former members who aren't around as much like Pat or Elysia or, yeah, even Erik would be interested in being in it.

The Discord server listed in the top post so far has turned out to be very welcoming to us refugees so far. Not quite the breadth of topics, but the catchall topics fit most things.

I personally am fed up with everthing moving to discord. It makes it harder to keep track of everything because I've got so many already.

I'm a bit on the fence about it now, but... I have created a Discord server (originally titled 'QC Forums') that could work as a forum replacement? Some other members here expressed interest in a Discord that we can control ourselves. Early stages, so it's quite bare bones, but feel free to join and provide feedback.

If it turns out that I misread the forum's mood, I'll ditch this server and actively participate in the older one (which quite a few of us have already joined).

I've poked my head in.  Of course, since it's the only non-game related Discord I'm in, I'll have to remember that I'm neither a disembodied intelligence possessing the nearest convenient corpse, nor a Final Fantasy catgirl.

I play odd things in games.  Of course now, in the bloody MMO I'm really getting to the point where I'm gonna have to pay real money to recustomise said catgirl to have more tail floof.

With the move to Discord, I'm sad to say I'll not be joining. I'm already a member of more discords than I can keep track of and I don't really see the point in joining another. I'll be sad to see the place go; I liked the slower pace of things in a forum.

If it helps, the Discord is currently setup in a forum-like style.

Not really, unfortunately, it's the fact that it's yet another thing on the huge list of discords on the side that's the issue. I like forums.
