The South by Southwest music festival released a torrent (bittorrent) of music by many of the artists there. The full version is 2.6 Gigabytes (yes Gigabytes) of music by a variety of artists. You need bittorrent to download/upload. There is a smaller version with clips of the music. Remmber to leave the client running as long as you can.
The SXSW page is:
http://2005.sxsw.com/
The Torrent site is:

The official Bittorent site is:

Just thought yall might like this. I searched the forum but didn't see any posts about the torrent so if this is a dupe please spare my life.

Wow! thanks! I really wanted to go to sxsw, but at least there is this.

whats that smell? it smells like the horrible stench of spam!!!!! ADMIN!!!! KILL IT!! KILL IT!!!!!111ONEONEONE

How in the world is this spam? Spam is unsolicited email. Also, you know what nevermind, if you can't figure out the relevance of the South by Southwest music festival making available the work of multiple artists that you may have never heard of in the Music forum then I can only begin to guess at what your definition of Spam is.

<----SPAM

Um, how is this Spam?
I just looked at the actual page, and that's DAMN cool. It's not just a massive amount of music, they've also written an incredibly cunning system using Ipod notes to let you browse the music by the festival's schedual and stuff. So it's just like being there. Sort of. Not really.
I'll have to take a closer look at who was playing before I commit to 2.6gb, but I'm tempted.
Thanks.

Granted, it crashes my computer if I try and actually gte music off it, but the page is damn cool, my mate went to it and I'm pretty jealous...
Not spam.

I recently grabbed the whole spanking thing off of Bittorrent. Still going through the 50-some hours of music, but some highlights (ie. didn't make me scream and smash the NEXT button):
EDIT: I have bolded the seriously awesome songs here. Highly recommended:
Album - 2/3
BC Camplight - Blood and Peanut Butter
Big City Rock - Do You Know What You Want
Black Moses - Stevie
Bloom - Don't Tell A Dead Man How To Die
Diplomats of Solid Sound - The Cuber Bake
Edie Sedgwick - Martin Sheen
Melissa Ferrick - Beijing
Pluto - Dance Stamina
SubArachnoid Space - Honorable Mention
Surferosa - Lucky Lipstick
The Addictions - Candy
The Crimea - Lottery Winners On Acid
The Dawn Parade - The Underground
The Juliana Theory - Do You Believe Me?
The Longcut - Transition
The Panda Band - Eyelashes
the pillows - Ride on shooting star
The Lascivious Biddies - Betty
Turing Machine - Don't Mind If I Don't
Uncut - Day Breaks Red Light
Hmmm. now that I look at it, some of those titles might have been truncated. Oh well. Artist is there. I'm sure you're all bright cookies :)

For those like me who can't download the thing without bittorrent crashing your computer, Vinyl Mine went through and picked out the best mp3s. There are probably other similar best-ofs out there that I haven't found yet

Hmmm. that looks like a list of bands that Vinyl wanted to see there, rather than a "best of". I didn't find many of those tracks in the showcase (there's a saxon shore track, and I think one other...)
-
there is apparently a band names "The Czars" from Denver.
its leaching now, at 890 kbps so we'll see in just a bit won't we?
-
Dude - you namechecked The Dawn Parade!
And for that I love you unconditionally!
Seriously, I used to travel around the country in my mate's car to see this band, they are utterly fantastic, they have a gift for encapsulating heartbreak like no other band, and even with the line up changes, they're still amazing...

Sorry for the necromancy, but the torrent is up again for this year and there's lots of good stuff, and of course a lot of crap, but hey, its free!
The torrents for this year are listed here:
http://2006.sxsw.com/toolbox/schedules/ipod/
The ID3 tags are good for filtering out the stuff you dont want.

Just for future reference, I don't think anyone will mind if you start a completely new thread for something like this when the old thread dates back 11 months.
-
Yeah, I probably should have since the 2005 torrents are now dead.
Too bad, there was some good stuff in there, I've got them on my Mac still.
So, how many of you are coming down for the 'event' ?
I'm a local, so I only go to the free stuff anymore.
There's some good bands in that torrent, some 'meh' bands
and a few 'OMG that's just wrong'(TM)
