I want to expand my music horizons. I am currently looking for older music or newer music that doesn't suck. Really anything. I am really into currently, Zeppelin, Velvet UNderground, Hendrix, Dylan, Tom Petty, preety much nomral stuff. I was looking for more of this era but a little less "Popular" but still excellant. Any suggestions?
-
Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, THe Doors, Van Halen, The Police, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rush, and REO Speedwagon, to name a few.
-
Some few you might look into:
-Yes
-King Crimson
-Traffic
-Sly and the Family Stone
-Paul Butterfield (moving away from rock here into more folk-y-ish)
-ABBA
uhm many many more that I can't think of off the top of my head...
(P.S. ABBA was a joke, don't hurt me)
-
And Kai beats me to the post while I'm thinking... Heh.
-
Oh, How could I have forgotten Yes? What is wrong with me.
-
Good choice with CSNY, Kai.
I must add Traveling Wilburys to that list. Awesome albeit relatively short-lived supergroup.
-
Mmmm Four Way Street? Good stuff.
-
The Grateful Dead, the Eagles, Hawkwind, Jethro Tull, Queen, Rush and everything else that's already been said.
-
beatles perhaps?
-
dire straits seems like a worthy addition to that list.
check out "various artist" albums from the times (not new informercial ones)
i reccomend the secret policemans ball (s). hard to find, but a good mix and absolutley awsome on vinyl.
-
i know this really cool band, its pretty obscure though
its called "learn to spell"
i think the guys in it were influenced by bands like Yes, The Beatles and Queen
-
yeah... beatles. all beatles.
either start with revolver or abbey road. rubber soul is good too, but man... beatles. and if you think "oh, but i've heard the beatles"... you've heard the singles, you'd be surprised how much you haven't heard.
the same applies to the beach boys... anyone who listens to music needs to have at least heard pet sounds.
-
CSNY are okay, but for what its worth, if you're looking for "more of this era but a little less "Popular" but still excellant," I'd highly reccomend delving into Neil Young's catalogue. The man had probably the most diverse, fascinating, and uniformly excellent discography of anyone in the 1970s. Everything from Everybody Knows This is Nowhere in 1969 up until Rust Never Sleeps in 1979 is top-notch.

I was gonna mention Neil Young, but I just sorta packaged it with CSNY. Because is there anyone who likes CSNY who doesn't like Neil Young?
-
Zeppelin, Velvet Underground, Hendrix, Dylan, Tom Petty
*sings* One of these things is not like the others...
-
Wishbone Ash.
ONLY EARLY REO SPEEDWAGON!
Van Der Graff Generator
Uriah Heep
Genesis (up to 1978)
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
Joe Walsh
Edgar Broughton Band
Groundhogs
etc.
-

Haha, my dad has some Dr. Hook albums on vinyll, maybe I'll give em a listen.
-

-
Jeff Beck aint classic rock, sorry, try again later
hahahahah
hahahhahah
hahahahha you die
jeff beck= guitarist for the yardbirds, the same time jimmy page was in the yardbirds
they did a few shows together
jeff beck played back up on a nice hollow body and he sounded great
whatever he did after the yardbirds was influenced greatly by his experience with page
screw
-
Jeff Beck certainly is classic rock.
-
Jeff Beck certainly is classic rock.
this man has his tie on the right way!
(polish proverb..bear with me if it doesn't translate)
-
are we talking about the same Jeff Beck?
Im talkin about the one that did Loser
-
wait, now im confused
-
What about Jefferson Airplane?
-
are we talking about the same Jeff Beck?
Im talkin about the one that did Loser
You definitely have the wrong Beck in mind. Not the wrong Jeff Beck, the wrong Beck period.
-
k, well now that we got that cleared up
-
rarr...
you might wanna look into some early blues stuff too...it really gets you thinking about your roots....
im talking Blind Lemon Jefferson style...Howlin' Wolf is my favourite though
-
kansas, boston, the who, and Queen, I love classic rock. I AM the classic rocker. its what i grew up on.
-
I love you, IHeartShinyObjects. When I didn't see anyone post Kansas or Boston I thought to myself, what is this world coming to? But you have restored my faith in humanity.
-
I was going to describe Kansas as the Hitler of classic rock, but then I remembered Uriah Heep.
Some 60's and 70's artists I'd recommend:
Brian Eno, Fela Kuti, King Crimson, Magma, Van Morrison, Can, Yes, XTC, Gentle Giant, The Kinks, The Zombies, Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Samla Mammas Manna, Suicide, Keith Tippett, Sparks, Curved Air, The Clash, Talking Heads, Phil Ochs, Love, Hatfield and the North, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Roxy Music, Television
-

YOU MUST LOVE THE HEEP!
Really, why are they the Hitler of classic rock, man they rule!
Ever heard 'Salisbury', 'Lady In Black', 'Sunrise' etc?

the man knows his shit. i've not heard Sparks, but i've heard good things... The Features have been compared to Sparks a lot, and The Features are friggin awesome.
My friend just gave me a copy of Van Morrison's "Moondance"... great great stuff. so mellow, his voice is great.
-
I haven't seen anyone mention Fleetwood Mac. Rumours is a fantastic album. You really have to hand it to Lindsey(sp?) Buckingham & company.
As far as other stuff goes, I'll second the nomination of the Beach Boys and Pet Sounds specifically. Brian Wilson is a songwriting genius! You should also pick up the recently released SMiLE -- too bad it took 35 years to be released! I
~~Willis
-
I love Fleetwood Mac.
Other great ladies (bands) of rock: Heart, Jefferson Airplane, Her majesty Janis Joplin.
And I second the ABBA.

Fleetwood Mac went downhil as soon as peter green left
-
Rush. That's all you need.
EDIT: And Deep Purple.
-
Rush=godliness
-
Blue Oyster Cult
Van Morrison (which is more folkish but whatever)
The Kinks
Lou Reed
Grateful Dead
I second the Beatles, The Who, Talking Heads, and the Dire Straits
-
Needs more Motörhead. A lot more Motörhead. 8)
If you like Hendrix listen to Joe Satriani too. Not really 'classic' maybe 'cos he's quite recent but ehh, the guy does some neat things with guitars.
-
Joe Satriani is a fucking god with the guitar.
-
buddy holly damn it!
-
He is classic and he rocks...not "classic rock."
-
possibly true... but buddy holly is teh awesome and everyone should hear him at least once
-
Forgot to mention Pink Fairies.
It's cool as a penguin
-
Joe Satriani is a fucking god with the guitar.
Very true. Go pick up his Surfing With The Alien album. You won't regret it. It's got Silver Surfer on the cover, for Christ's sake. That's +10 awesomeness right there.
You should check out The Animals. Very good stuff.
-
Check out the 60's Brazilian psychedelic wondergroup Os Mutantes. Also Small Faces, 13th Floor Elevators, Parliament/Funkadelic, Serge Gainsbourg, The Stooges, etc.
-
I just heard the Zombies for the first time a couple weeks ago (well the first time that I knew it was the Zombies) and fell in love. Check out Odessey and Oracle.*
* That is how they spell it, not me.
-
since im a young one i will count Dream Theatre as a classic rock band, sort of in the same vein as King Crimson...... also I have to just plug my all time fave band even thought I'm ready for a tirade off 'their not rock', 'their not classic' and they are 'popular' blah blah blah but IMHO Tool are the best rock band EVER and their sound is truly timeless a CLASSIC I would say
-
A current band to look out for: The Secret Machines. They're sort of a combination of Led Zeppelin's pounding rock and Pink Floyd's soaring narcotic weirdness. I must insist that you listen to it with headphones, however, as the album (Now Here is Nowhere) contains many a throwback to the left-to-right-and-back-again mixing of Pink Floyd.
-
Stevie Ray Vaughn is good, as is The Beatles, and the Who. Pink Floyd, CSNY, Bee Gees (Though i'm not sure they count as classic rock), Boston, Kansas, Chicago, Springsteen and the E steet band (Though Bruce hasn't been as good since "Born in the USA." After that he decided to be an "artist.").
The Rolling stones, man. Exile on Mainstreet may be the closest thing to a favorite album i've ever had.
I also intend to pick up the Traveling Wilbury's collection tonight. That's another great band.

Bringing back 2 year old threads FTW... this one is so old I may have read it before I disappeared !
-
Where did this thread come from?
-
I kinda surprise nobody mention the Kinks or Joe Cocker yet.
-
Reading this thread is like watching Mulholland Drive while on ketamine
-
BIG STAR.
-
guys whoever started this thread is clearly missing or dead please don't make suggestions
-
I heard the song "Eight Miles High" by The Byrds for the first time this week, and man.. awesome. I don't know if their other songs are as rockin'
And I thought Mars Volta was doing something special with the fragmented guitar sound (see L'Via L'vsomethingquez).
-
Okay, first of all, screw the beatles...
Secondly...
I can't believe no one else has mentioned Supertramp.. I mean c'mon, Breakfast in America is friggin sweet!!!!
I suppose all the other relevant classic rock bands have been mentioned... maybe also have a lil' ZZ Top, Blondie (I guess they're kinda classic rock, more punk rock really), and some David Bowie (during his Ziggy Stardust era).
-
Okay, first of all, screw the beatles...
I'm reading this sentence, and I understand what it means, it just doesn't make any sense.

Well... we all have our preferences, I just happen to not enjoy listening to a band that is grossly overrated... what can I say?
-
Nope, sorry. Try again.
-
Supertramp? Supertramp?!
No. Just... no.
-
Hey guys!
Hello! welcome to the music forums, good luck soilder!
-
I liked CCR before The Minutemen made it cool to.
-

CSN?
Nobody seems to have mentioned CCR, so I'll do that now, and I don't recall seeing Chicago.
Santana?
Emerson. Lake, and Palmer? (Forgot about these guys the first time)
And they're a less known group at least here in the US, but Manfred Mann's Earth Band (They're primarily a live band these days, though I don't know if they've done much different stuff since like 2000... but who cares when they can still sell out concert after concert for at least mid-level venues in Eastern Europe? They played the NFL Europe Bowl Halftime Show a couple years back) Recommended albums for those looking for traditional "classic rock" would be Watch, The Roaring Silence, and Nightengales and Bombers.

I'm mostly happy with the stuff done as the Beatles, and I do like most of McCartney's solo stuff, though frankly, i've never got what people see in John Lennon's solo work. Lennon's solo work hasn't aged well at all, as it was such a product of it's time, lacking the timeless quality of the Beatles music.
This is going to sound cruel, and it's only my personal belief, but I think the title of Genius was only really bestowed on Lennon because of his death, and his past as a Beatle. I tend to think that if he hadn't died, and kept on going, he would eventually have reached the status of "washed up." I hate to say that about someone, but it's how I feel. Plus, being a craggy old right-wing conservative, I was never really happy with how he left his wife and son for Yoko.
-
Ringo was easily the best Beatle. Show me anything the rest of them did that was as good as Thomas The Tank Engine.
-
Did anyone say Blue Cheer? I'm saying Blue Cheer.
-
Hell yes Blue Cheer.
-
At least the 13th Floor Elevators made it onto the first page.
I'm going to add The Soft Machine, Love, and Donovan to the list.
-
Though not classic rock, I have to say you should check out Gram Parsons and all he's connected to (The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers). The MC5 are an actual rock group and they're great too.
-

Once, an engine attached to a train,
Was afraid of a few drops of rain.
It went into a tunnel,
And squeaked through its funnel,
And wouldn't come out again.
-
Needs more Simon and Garfunkel.
-
Also, if you like The Clash and/or The Who you should listen to The Jam. They were a late 70s mod-rock revival band.
-
The Temptations.
Oh shit, wait...
-
Wishbone Ash.
OMG someone else has heard of them!
I officiallly endorse: Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, The Doors and The Yardbirds.
-
Electric Light Orchestra!
Ohh, telephone line,
give me some time,
I'm living in twilight
(yes I know this is 2 years old)
-
Man, i'm pretty sure everybody's dad knows Wishbone Ash
-
Jefferson Airplane is pretty bitchin.
-
Man, i'm pretty sure everybody's dad knows Wishbone Ash
Yeah 'everyone's DAD has heard of them but not 'everyone', ie nobody of a similar age to myself.
