Simple. List what/who your favourite band. artist or musician was for each year of your life since you were conscious of music:
5: The Beatles
6: Johnny Cash
7: Bob Dylan
8: Bob Dylan
9: Meatloaf
10: Meatloaf
11: Pink Floyd
12: Pink Floyd
13: Led Zeppelin
14: System of a Down
15: Cradle of Filth
16: Finntroll
17: Skyclad
-
Let's see...we can define the phases:
1:The Beatles
2: Nine Inch Nails/Soundgarden
3: David Bowie
4: Talking Heads
All of which I still like a lot.
-
Hehe...mine are gonna be pretty bad...
2/3 - Joy Division (a fairly good start, may explain why I became so insufferably miserably in later years though)
9 - Guns 'n' Roses (big sisters are great for getting you onto music)
10 - Take That (they were great)
11 - PJ and Duncan - (they weren't so great, but anyway)
12 - The Spice Girls (What?!)
13 - Garbage (Shirley Manson was my first girl crush)
14 - Mansun (This is probably why I had few friends at school, if you define yourself by your music tastes, it's generally good to pick a decent band)
15 - (Still Mansun) and Manic Street Preachers
16/17 - King Adora (They were boys who wore make up and had punchy tunes...and were...'friendly' towards their fans, it was hard to be hormonal and not love them)
19 - present day -Bright Eyes.
Jeeeeeez....my opinion in music's never gonna be respected now...
...not that it ever was, but seriously. That's a pretty shameful list...
-
11: "Weird Al" Yankovic
12: "Weird Al" Yankovic
13: Metallica
14: Nine Inch Nails
15: Nine Inch Nails
16: Nine Inch Nails
17: Nine Inch Nails
18: Nine Inch Nails
19: Nine Inch Nails
20: Jim Thirlwell (aka Foetus, Steriod Maximus, Manorexia, et al.)
21: Jim Thirlwell
22: Jim Thirlwell
23: Jim Thirlwell
24: Jim Thirlwell
25: Jim Thirlwell
Obviously, I'm not one to redefine my favorites unless something major happens.
*notes
Age 11: Received my first cassette, "Weird Al" Yankovics's Dare to Be Stupid, as a birthday present.
Age 13: A friend gives me a dubbed cassette of Metallica's ...and Justice for All. I'm blown away.
Age 14: I see the videos for NIN's "Head Like a Hole" and "Wish" on MTV, and get hooked on industrial music. Later that year, I get Foetus' Gash album.
Age 20: NIN releases The Fragile. It does nothing for me. NIN's reputation tarnished, I quickly realize that Thirlwell's discography has no such disappointments. And it's more musically impressive to boot.
-
0.1-13: The Doors / Dire Straits (My dad's fault, this. I was brought up on a diet of classic rawk. :D)
14: Manic Street Preachers
15: Iron Maiden / Metallica
16-present day: Anathema / Opeth

Is there a particular reason why this is in the Sandbox and not in oh, say, the Music forum?
EDIT: Aside from that, cool idea.
-
Wll, it's not about music, per se. It's about the members' lives, albeit using music as a framing device.
-
Hmm . . . favourite bands in your lifetime, or what you were listening to when you were 15 - as against favourite cover versions or favourite live albums, or what you're listening to right now (all in the music forum). Seems like splitting hairs to me.
But it's not really important, I just figured the Music thread would be a more obvious venue but I'm not going to go into a hissy fit about it.
-
Let's think...shall I let my history of bad musical taste be known....why not?
10-S Club 7 (omg, I actualy liked them)
11-Wheetus
12-Britney Spears (Why was I so stupid???)
13-Led Zepplin
14-The Beatles
As you can probably tell, I was afraid of beeing diffrent when I was younger, and just listened to what everyone else liked. Now I have my own taste in music, that only one other person I know has.
-
I always liked stuff that people consider 'bad' - but it was because I genuinely liked it, and even now I still call Spice Girls and Take That good pop...
I think I only liked PJ and Duncan because I thought they were cute, though..
-
-15 = madonna (like a virgin, blue)
15-17 = 50's, 60's stuff mostly (no idea why other then radio stations started sucking in the early 90's)
16-17 = Metallica (black, and justice for all)
18+ = Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, Bauhaus, Ministry
28+(30) = still NIN, Front 242, Bauhaus, Ministry, but now with extra death and dance techno. Also lots of Joy Division and Depeche Mode.
-
5-22: Iron Maiden
-
8-11 - Various Ska tapes that my brother would play
12 - Alanis Morrisette (my first cassette purchase)
13 - Mighty, Mighty Bosstones/Oasis
14 - Green Day
15 - NIN
16 - Radiohead
17 - Godspeed You Black Emperor!
18 - Boards Of Canada
19 - Nothing.
Not sure if those are really correct ages. 16/17 was the best musical period in my life, after listening to nothing but NIN, I discovered Radiohead's Kid A, Sigur Ros, GYBE, later Interpol, BoC, Prefuse 73... I was so overwhelmed with music. Now I am just kind of underwhelmed with music. I'm waiting for something else to blow me away, listening to 'kaini industries' on repeat until then.
-
Lets see...it roughly goes along the lines of..
4- Kylie Minogue
5- The Beatles/ Gustav Holst's Planet Suite played over and over again.
6-7 - Bjork
8-9- Eternal
10-12 - Spice Girls
12-13 - Outkast/And for some reason, a lot of shitty dance/trance music.
14- Muse/Placebo/Vex Red
16- Smashing Pumpkins/Radiohead/Suede
17- The Flaming Lips/Pixies
18- Modest Mouse
19- The Dears
-
I think I only liked PJ and Duncan because I thought they were cute, though..
wasnt that ant and dec?
-
^ indeed it was.....

-
birth to 10 - joni mitchell, cat stevens, simon and garfunkel, james taylor.
10 to 12 - queen, david bowie, the beatles, the who.
13 to 15 - the sex pistols (just to piss off my parents who, honestly, have decent taste in music, considering i was raised on the stuff listed above).
16 to present (18) - it changes every week.
-
oh how could I have forgotten Simon and Garfunkel!
and American Pie!
bye.... bye... miss American Pie...
Drove my Chevy to the levy, but the levy was dry...
which also brings up Buddy Holly!
-
0-8: The Beatles, Peter Paul& Mary, &c. (ex-hippie parents are cool sometimes)
8-10: old softrock shite that i still know all the words to
12-14: No Doubt
14-17: Disturbed
17-18: Slipknot
18-19: A Perfect Circle
-
early childhood- black sabbath / ozzy
12 to 15ish- public enemy
15ish to 18-metallica / pantera
18 to 23- bad religion
23 to 26- rancid, clash, bad religion etc
26 to current- pretty much a bit of everything
-
10-14 - Aqua(I was an odd kid or more precisely like everyone else)
14-16 - Kashmir(danish band)
17 - Radiohead or a bit of everything really
-
16: Tool
17: Tool/Radiohead
18: Radiohead/Machinae Supremacy
I ignored music until 16.. heh.
-
wasnt that ant and dec?
Psssh...
they started out as PJ and Duncan (their names from Byker Grove) - by the time they'd become Ant and Dec, I was so, like, totally over them ;)
-
i remember when the building collapsed on the headmaster. byker grove had an awesome storyline
-
b/s
the best one was when Ant got blinded in a paintball fight.
"uuuuuh nuuuuuuuuuh! av bein bleinded!!!"
-
0-9 Beatles, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, classical/piano (will stick with me forever)
10, 11 Backstreet Boys (ye ye!), AC DC, Fatboy Slim, Crystal Method (last 2 I also still love)
12 Random pop music on the radio
14-16 random pop punk (eg. Sum 41, when they only had one album no one new about, Blink 182, Autopilot Off, etc.)
16-18 indie/international punk (eg. at the drive in, alkaline tio, bratmobile, thrice, hot water music when they were still not very popular)
late 18-present indie rock/pop, although I'm fairly ecclectice to everything else (eg. death cab, built to spill, decemberists, elliot smith, electic six)
The ones that had the biggest effect on my were probably my decent into punkhood in my early teens, which lead me to find indie bands and write reviews for an indie punk site. That and my early child hood when I listened to my dad's and brother's music.
-
4-Brooks n' Dunn
5-10-Garth Brooks
11-Linkin Park
12-Violent Femmes
13-19-The Pixies
Though from 16-19 now there have been moments of infatution with other bands... my "second favorites" included The Decemberists, Wilco, Camper Van Beethoven, Of Montreal, Talking Heads, Love, Jesus and Mary Chain...
And the funny thing is that when I was smaller and liked country a lot, what I listened to most frequently were David Bowie, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Pixies (But I haaaaaated them). (Yay for parents.) I just really liked Garth Brooks, I guess.
-
SWEET (about everything except Garth Brooks)
-
1. Helloween
2.Iron Maiden
3. Deep Purple
-
You're only 3 years old?

Here you go:
age 1-10: ABBA
age 10-12: Weird Al
age 12-13: Sum 41
age 13-14: NoFX

10-11: Green Day (pre-emogarbage)
12-13: They Might Be Giants
14-15: They Might Be Giants
16-17: They Might Be Giants
18: They Might Be Giants (Reel Big Fish comes in a close 2nd)
-
I don't know if I can match it up to specific years for the early parts, but:
Elementary school: The Beach Boys
Middle school: Pink Floyd
15-16: The Poster Children
17-25: The Secret Stars
I've certainly had bands that I really like come up in the past few years, but sometimes you find the perfect one and it doesn't stop.
Also notice that I got dumber when I entered middle school. I think this is pretty common.
-
1-5: The Mario Theme Song and other nintendo songs...
...6-9 draws a blank, though I know I Michael Jackson was in there for a year
10-12: Green Day, Green Day, GREEN DAY.
13-early 14: Bouncing Souls
14-early 15: Kid Dynamite
15-16 and onward: Kid Dynamite, Jawbreaker, Streetlight Manifesto.
I do listen to other types of music, but none of it gets me the same way these bands do. yarr.
-

ok, i have a very musical household, so my brother and i were raised on music....my sister they gave up on i guess...
the years here will be rather sketchy
0-9 = the beatles, the police, the who, elvis costello and joe jackson, michael jackson, cyndi lauper, the smurfs (shut up!! i was under 9)
9-12 = the beatles, the police, elvis costello, joe jackson, capercaillie, the rankin family, the barra macneils

18-present = all of the above (yes ALL) plus alkaline trio, no use for a name, bad religion, taking back sunday, jimmy eat world, yellowcard, the killers, afi
so i like a lot of music....also classical and jazz are spinkled in there in healthy doses.
there is always music on in my house, it would be weird if it wasn't
if it's not on the stereo, it's my brother playing guitar or me playing piano or singing
-
I'll make it short:
When I was a kid - Led Zeppelin
Since I was 12 - The Misfits
Since I was 16 - Johnny Cash/Misfits/Effigies
I'm 20 now and not much has changed, except that I now listen to a lot of metal on top of the punk, oi and country. Hooray for Motorhead, Slayer and Maiden.
-
Everyone is going to hate me now.
?-12: The Beatles
12-14: Savage Garden
14-15: Barenaked Ladies
15-21: Sister Hazel
21- : The New Pornographers
No, and I'm not Canadian (although Michigan is close) and I don't know what the thing with Canadian bands with risque names is.
-

Johnny Cash+The Misfits+oi = one sexy equation.
-
I'll do general phases, since I really don't remember music from an early age.
1: Roxette, Pallas and Sisters Of Mercy (First memories, about 7-8 years old)
2: Michael Jackson and Def Leppard (11-14)
3: Lightning Seeds and All Saints (<===Kill me now :( 17 years)

-
By random fluke I got addicted to garbage the month their self titled album came out, heard "only happy when it rains" on the radio and decided to get...or rather beg for it when I went to the store with my mom and today it's still in regular rotation ;)
Sooo... that had to be what.. age 12 or 13? Before that I mooched listening to Live and NIN from my older brother (how thankful I am to him for that), Zeppelin, Crosby Stills and Nash, CCRevival, Beatles and etc. from my parents. I had a Weird Al phase around 10 or 11, does everyone? around 14 or 15 I went into a weird metal phase, like Sepultura and all kinds of other angry shit, Tool pulled me out of that, and from there I've chilled and had my boundaries blur and tastes expand. ;)

-
Hmm... probably:
12-14 Metallica (my parents didn't listen to music)
14-16 Nirvana
16-18 Green Day
18-26 The Cure (present)
Not very impressive... but while there are loads and loads of bands that I think are better and more enjoyable to listen to than the Cure, I can't see any band being more dear to my heart in my lifetime. Awww.

-
Thank God that I changed...
-
muahaha. My musical taste rocked all along.
Is there something particularly bad about the Sex Pistols now btw? It shocks me to see them put on a comparitive level with Linkin Park.
-
Meh. I still like the Pistols....
-
They're not nearly as bad as Linkin Park, but I just don't really like them all that much.
-
I went from Bob Dylan and Traffic to Broadway hits to Talking Heads, Built to Spill, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Supergrass.
