Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: nihilist on 08 May 2005, 11:08
Yes, there is another GW thread, but that deals with people who are planning to get it, etc.  I have it, and have been playing.  I want to play with more people.  Mainly because the level three henchmen a) suck and b) attack shit that you could otherwise skirt by.  Dumb fuckers wade into the breach and attack a bunch of level eight Charr.  WTF.  I was trying to GO AROUND them you useless bastards.

Anyway, my name is Nihilist The Mad, so add me and whisper to me.

I have no qualms about playing here, there, or elsewhere.  :)

I also use voice communication software to make life easier.  I'll post the info later.

And Mnementh; it ain't abuse if the content is different.  :p

I will keep my eyes peeled for you Nihilist, but I think to interact we both need to be in an "International District" or something. My guy is Jarrel Stormblade anyhow.

Depends. If you're on different servers, then yes. However, you can move your account between servers up to five times (it's under the 'Edit Account' button when you log in). I play on the American server despite being in Europe, because I can't deal with everyone speaking French and German all the time.

Oh, by the way, my name is Ciriel Swiftblade. I'm a level 10 warrior/monk. Play me.

I have a lvl 11 Necro/Ranger: Tuatha De Denand
I also have a lvl 12 Warrior/Monk: Jaden Denand

I play both with equal vigor.

I am already in a clan, but no one seems to be interested in questing in this clan... just PVP.  I like PVP in this game, but I still have a LOT of stuff to do before I start to focus on it in any significant way.

Also, at this point, playing two characters (with a joint 'storage' account), money is coming in a LOT easier.  If I take two trips out into the Dreidmore Bowl (it's one of the last zones in the mountains, and - according to the Guild Wars Guru map, seems to be about the halfway point for exploration) I come back with enough cash and gear to clear 400 gold, easy.  Ten trips should be enough to save the cash for a Guild of my/our own.

See the other GW thread for info on that.

I'm more about wandering about, exploring, and killing things.  Except in the breach.  I'm all about getting smacked down there.

Post by: Sideways on 09 May 2005, 09:19
Well, I still have a BUNCH of quests that I can go back to do... but I get frustrated with them.  There are a lot that aren't clear, so you run around a zone for 45 minutes, not gaining any exp (because I'm lvl 12, fighting most lvl 8s and 9s) trying to find some obscure drop, or trying to find a zone where your quest begins (because it won't tell you in the quest description at times).  Ughh.

I've 'abandoned' a lot of the stale quests I had because spending 45 minutes performing those quests, to get 200 exp, just wasn't worth it.  If they offered skills, or decent items, that'd be one thing.  To simply offer 200 or 300 exp, for what is sometimes a LOT more work than can be justified... not my cup of tea.

I still have a few really rewarding quests that I just can't finish, like Althea's Ashes (2000 exp).  It's just such a DAMNED HARD QUEST!!

And right now my W/Mo is in Beacon's Perch.  You head north into the Bowl, and what you fight is pretty wimpy (lvl 9 Centaurs).  you head south, and... wow... lvl 24s.  So I'm at a bit of a stalemate with this game right now.  I'm still loving it, but I can't seem to explore any further... no matter how good my group of lvl 12s can be, we simply can't take more than 2 lvl 24s at a time.  ANY additional aggro = death.

Post by: nihilist on 09 May 2005, 09:23
I originally had problems figuring out what to do, till I just started following the green arrow on my compass.  It tells me where to go, and I follow.

I finished Althea's Ashes last night.  Jesus, but that was nearly impossible.  Two level 10 E/Mo, a level 14 R/M and a level 9 R/E, and we nearly didn't make it.  Certainly didn't help when the 14 R/M ditched about 2/3 of the way through, right in the land of level 8 stone/rock guys.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Sideways on 09 May 2005, 09:29
It's not the stone/rock guys that really mess me up, it's the massive amount of Charr at the end.  That temple area is standing-room-only.

I've been in two groups now that have reached that point with absolutely no troubles, only to have idiot players aggro half the temple.

Sure, they're level 8 charr, I'm lvl 12... I have a ton of self/ally buffs and heals... but when 20+ charr are beating on me... I can only take so much.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: nihilist on 09 May 2005, 09:32
Strange, we had more problems with the rock/stone trolls then with the Charr.  They sure do hate me, though.  I generally get swarmed by them.  I've got some cool E spells that allow me to do constant local damage so that they can beat on me, but get mad damage, leaving me free to take on the guys in the distance.  Oh, and I've got a protective spell that enables me to recover health by casting spells, which is basically all I do anyway.  So, yeah.  :)

Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Sideways on 09 May 2005, 09:37
I primarily use two monk enchantments.  One gives me a 5 health regen, the other gives me energy and adrenaline any time I do melee damage (being a warrior primary, this skill was perfect).

Then I have the warrior healing ability, and HP increase (+145 HP for 10 seconds).  I also bring a rez, a heal ally, and two sword attacks.

I managed to get this sword that is just awesome.  Bought it off someone in Ascalon for 500gold.  14-19 damage, +35% damage when health below 50%, improved energy recovery & casting time.

Those stone golems can be annoying, especially since 'bleed' skills just won't work on them... but they still drop pretty quick under my blade.  Faster than the Charr... because they have no armor, so when I strike, I do about 25-30 damage per hit... as opposed to about 14-18 damage on the Charr.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: nihilist on 09 May 2005, 11:24
Whoops, I was wrong.  I only did the ghost one, I attempted to do the ashes one a few minutes ago.  We would have been fine except for the fourth player who just waded in.  We'd be walking one way, he'd run off the other and start fights with six level 10 hydras.  Seriously, what the fuck were you thinking?  And again 2/3 of the way through, just vanishes.  Sweet.

I need to figure out what spells to bring in, the 'heal area' thing just doesn't seem to do it for me.  And I need to buy monk skills.  And a better staff, my 4-6 damage just doesn't cut it.  Nurr.  Help.  I have money and goods!  :p
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Sideways on 09 May 2005, 12:07
Heal Area is great, but heals enemies too... Heal Party heals for a lot less, costs more, but - obviously - heals your entire party.

I find bringing regen buffs is better than actual healing spells.  Put a 10 - 15 second regen enchantment on a teammate, and you don't HAVE to heal them for that time.  :P

Then I worked on my webcomic for today.

Then I played again, and spent about another hour and a half just farming for charr hides.

So no, I don't see me getting bored of this game any time soon.

I need to stop switching characters... Nihilist is getting mad levels, and I have a lvl 15, a lvl 14, and a lvl 8.

No... more... alts.

I really want to get into Droknar's Forge with my Necro/Ranger.  There is a skills trainer/seller there that has two skills I REALLY want.  Both of them have to do with summoning minions.  I just want to be able to bring an army of undead wherever I go... is that so wrong?

There's 'Animate Bone Horror' which you get very early on, and at Droknar's Forge there are; 'Animate Bone Fiend' and 'Animate Bone Minions'.

Animate Bone Horror - Exploit nearby corpse to animate a lvl 1-14 Bone Horror.
Animate Bone Fiend - Exploit nearby corpse to animate a lvl 1-14 Bone Fiend.  Bone Fiends can attack at range.
Animate Bone Minions - Exploit nearby corpse to animate two lvl 0-10 Bone Minions.

After most fights, I am running around with 4 lvl 11 Bone Horrors.  If I get those other two 'animate' skills, I could - instead - have a Bone Horror, two Bone Minions and a Bone Fiend all running around, slaughtering everything in their path.  It's pretty easy to maintain 4 minions once your 'Death Magic' is high enough... they last for quite awhile, and do some pretty awesome damage.

I've got a lvl 18 elementalist monk who is currently getting pounded by the level 24+ characters in the area.  Last night I was on a quest with Chin, and we all died, except for the healer who was somehow embedded in the ground.  Took us about 90 minutes to get that far, and then we just quit; otherwise we'd have to restart from the very beginning.  Ohgodno.

I also have a level 8 warrior elementalist.  Tank!  He's also post-searing, so I'm gonna have to run his ass around, and give him some of the items that my primary character has picked up.  A level 12 shield would go real good.

My newest character is a level 7 necro monk.  Hehe, I love this character.  I'm gonna finish up the 'happy' Ascalon with her, and bring her to the post-searing as well.  Most of the time I can kill things before they even start to attack me.  Necros also have sweet group attacks that don't take much energy.

Though, honestly, the elementalist skill 'Meteor Shower', I've been using it to wipe out entire groups of level 18 necrid horsemen.

y'know, to tell you guys the truth, post-searing Ascalon is really starting to shit me.  what's doing it for me is the vast quantities of creatures that pop up out of the ground over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.  you clear out a run from one place to another, go through a portal to do one thing, then come back and they are all repopulated again.  it reminds me of really old RPGs where you walk around not seeing any enemies and then all of a sudden you're at a fight sequence.  there's no way to avoid them like you can roaming mobs, you pretty much have to fight them.

add this to not being able to jump up onto things so there is pretty much only static ways that you can run through terrain and henchmen that are so frustratingly lame and underpowered and you'll begin to see why i am getting annoyed.  i mean, when i heard that there were henchmen i thought that maybe it would be ok for soloing, because i don't really have time to fuck around finding people to play with who aren't total fucktards.  but why even bother giving players henchmen if they're going to be so useless?

also, i've had the same fucking weapon for the last say, six levels.  nothing drops anything interesting.  i know that this game is supposed to be all about the skills & how you use them, and they say that being uber will never be about time played, etc, but if it is supposed to be all about that then why the hell do we get so little skills to begin with?  before anyone says anything: yes, i am doing quests to get new skills, but hardly any of them are interesting enough to use anyway, so i'm stuck using the same ones i always use.

so here's a recap of what's pissing me off:

running on annoying set paths through bleak wasteland settings that all look the same with a bunch of underpowered henchmen fighting against the same annoyingly unavoidable creatures over and over again with the same weapon i've had for 6 levels and a bunch of skills, only a handful of which are interesting at all.

someone please tell me it gets better than this.

at the moment i'm playing Elementalist/Mesmer, and to tell you the truth i am enjoying the Mesmer side more than the elementalist.  also, perhaps i'll switch over to my melee character for a bit and see if there's any difference in the way the game feels, but i'm not exactly holding my breath.

edit: i just read back over that and found it to be both harsh and totally true.  unless i can find something to save this game i am really thinking that i might reopen my WoW account and go in search of PvP encounters or something.  this game is very very different to what i was expecting, and even rather different to the beta of it that i played a while back.

im really enjoying Guild Wars. I think its a very noobie friendly game. It doesnt give u all these stats and things all at once and bombard u with confusion. Plus most of the peeps i have talked to on it are really nice people and not obnoxious.

Ive started a new char but i need someone to party with. Anyone interested?

Problem #1: Old Ascalon comprises about 4% of the game.  If you're spending hours and hours and hours there, try moving on... do some of the Primary quests, which will take you to new lands where you'll fight all new enemies.

Quote from: est

Actually, the henchmen are pretty awesome, as far as CPU-Controlled characters go.  What - specifically - is your problem with them?  The Healer Henchman (Allyssa?) dies pretty easy... she always will, because she seems to be more focused on healing teammates, than on healing herself... and the enemies always rush her (I don't blame them... take the healer out first, makes sense).  As for not being able to jump, I was a little worried about this at first too... but then I realized that - at least in this game - it would be pretty pointless to have a 'jump' feature.  What do I need to jump over, exactly?  I suppose it would be nice to jump down to some of the paths, rather than running around little ridges and such... but it's not game-breaking, IMHO.

Quote from: est

I can't speak for Elementalists/Mesmers, but I know Ranger/Necro/Warrior/Monk sets pretty well, and the skills you get, all throughout the game, are both interesting and useful.  Finding 8 skills, out of both professions, that compliment each other well, is really rewarding.  Once again, if you think you're stagnating with the quality of skills you're getting, MOVE PAST OLD ASCALON.  I cannot stress, enough, just how little of the game you have actually seen.

About your concern with weapon... there are excellent weapons in the game, but you won't find them in Ascalon (unless you buy them off another player).  MOVE PAST OLD ASCALON!!!

Quote from: est

LEAVE OLD ASCALON!  If Guild Wars was ONLY the top 1/4 of the map (Ascalon & surrounding areas) then YEAH... it'd get VERY boring, VERY fast!  Seeing the same charred landscape for hours and hours would really start to take it's toll.  But, you haven't seen the coast, the jungles, the swamps, the deserts, the snow-capped mountains... get what I'm saying?  You've seen SO little of the game, do not pass judgement on it.  This game hardly even BEGINS until you get to Kryta, and beyond!

Try a few characters, play them through Pre-Searing, and a little beyond, just to see what suits your playstyle.  Each character plays as a completely new experience.  Warriors have their 'Adrenaline' skills, Necro's make use of leeching abilities, and exploit corpses for AOEs, pets and buffs, Rangers get a primary pet, a slew of archery/self-buff skills, and eventually traps.  Monks are probably the most versatile and EASILY the most sought-after teammates in the entire game... keep that in mind!

The fact is; this game is not better than WoW.  Do I mean to say that WoW is better?  Hell no.  Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges.  Guild Wars really is NOT an MMO.  If you want a 'typical' MMO experience (Race to uberlevel, race to ubergear/weapons, spawncamping, random PC encounters in the world (PVP or otherwise) then this game, frankly, isn't for you.  Guild Wars is not about your level, or even your weapons (unless you play Warrior, then the weapon does really matter).  Guild Wars is all about your skills, how you use them, and how you play in general.  I've been in teams where a lvl 20, decked-out in the nicest armor/gear has dropped like a fly, when a lvl 12, in the same team, with pissy gear, has completely OWNED the mobs we've been fighting... ONLY because the lvl 12 knows what he/she is doing, and is using skills that really work well together.

With my Necro/Ranger, I can NOT find a groove... the skillsets do not compliment each other very well.  With my Warrior/Monk the game is - at times - a little too easy.  I can take my lvl 15 Warrior/Monk, in a group with lvl 20s, fighting all lvl 19s or 20s, and often I am the last man standing in a really tense situation.  Hell... I've CLEARED entire areas, after my higher-level teammates have died, just so I could turn around and rez them.

WoW: Gear + Level = Uber.
Playstyle + abilities = So what?

GW: Gear + Level = So what?
Playstyle + abilities = Uber.

I wholeheartedly agree with what Sideways says.  There's a big world to explore, and there's a huge variety of creatures to play with.  Also helps to have a larger party size, though that is usually to offset the fact that you'll be fighting superior foes.

I think the one thing that one must do in GW is to have two or three characters, so you can try to find a good mix of skills and abilities, and match it up with the player's style.  I have a level 18 elementalist monk that I despise now.  I'm busy bringing my necro monk and warrior elementalist up levels because they're far more enjoyable to play with.  It does make a difference.

thanks a lot for the advice, all.

my lvl 20 Necro/Ranger friend basically walked me through missions 2-4 last night.  it was entertaining for the most part, but mostly because i enjoyed watching him blast the crap out of everything.  i still find myself bored with the Elementalist though, and i mainly seem to use my Mesmer skills.  during the missions i found myself seemingly doing almost do damage to anything (was level 10 vs lvl 6 mobs) whereas the level 11 warrior was taking out multiple enemies by himself.

i have a feeling that even though i think that a wizardly character is cool in theory my playstyle doesn't let me enjoy it.  i think i might fire up my Warrior when i get home and play for a while with him instead.  a melee character might make for a nice change of pace, as that (a Rogue) is what i enjoyed the most in WoW, also.  i think i'll probably end up going back over the missions properly with this character, as they looked like fun to do properly.

[edit]: now playing a Warrior.  even though i still pretty much only have the starter skills things feel much better.  i think i simply have to realise that i am not a mage player.

I just wish I had more time to play this game.

I may have peaked an interest in the game with a gal-pal of mine.  She wanted to check it out (was looking through the GW art book that came with the Collector's edition) so I helped her roll a character (elementalist).  She played for about 2 hours the one night she was at my place, and this morning, when I picked her up to drive her to work, she said she'd been daydreaming about the game ever since.

I may buy her a copy, since she seems interested.  I just don't know when she'd have the time to play!

I was going to play last night, but ended up going out for dinner, coming home and just passing out.  Mebbe tonight, though I have a 6:30 meeting which means that beer will be involved.  Tomorrow evening, heading over to my parent's place.  Gah.  Want to play!

Yeah, this is frustrating.

When I got hooked on City of Heroes, I somehow managed to fit in a solid 2-4 hours a night!!  I'm just as hooked on Guild Wars, and yet I can't seem to manage more than 4 - 6 hours a week... at most!

I could've played last night before I went to sleep, but I noticed that some buddies were online, playing Call of Duty: United Offensive, so I hopped onto Teamspeak, and we kicked some n00b ass for 2 hours!

I only have CSS installed right now, and I rather dislike it, so I don't even fire it up.  Waiting for a good FPS to suck me in again.

I want to play GW, but I'm a crusty old man that just passes out at about 11.

I'm a crusty old man that denies his crusty oldness.

Nah, I'm only 25.

However I do have to be up at 6:30 every morning, and yet I try to deny the fact that I need at least 7 hours sleep, and I'm usually awake until around 1:30 - 2:00 am.

So I'm almost always ready to fall asleep in my office the next morning, but I'd rather be this way than be missing out on stuff while I sleep my life away.

Hearing, as a child, that 1/3 of the average human life is spent sleeping, really disturbed me.  I'd never bothered to do the simple math of it, being only about 7 or 8 years old, but I remember it being bothersome that I could someday look back, from my deathbed or whatever, and possibly regret the amount of living I'd missed while asleep.

I was a wierd kid, I know.

So I rarely sleep more than 6 hours a night now.

i'm making it my goal in this game to buy my own little vanity guild an island for itself.

i made a vanity guild called "Team Explosive" [xps] last week, and am currently about 500g from making my cape.  once i've got my cape sorted i'm just going to play as per normal until i have enough money to buy a guildhall outright (currently around 70k), or until i find enough cool players in my timezone to invite and win in the test.

ps: i'm having fun again/still.  level 14.5 Warrior.  just arrived at Lion's Arch.  pretty much everything outside of missions is easy with Henchmen at the moment, so i'm actually able to get things done even when i can't find a decent group.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Sideways on 07 Jun 2005, 07:52
Sadly that 'not finding a decent group' happens a fair bit.  I'm getting annoyed at people who die, and then quit the team, teleporting back to town.  It's fine if the task is simply too daunting, say you can't handle any further deaths (after dying a FEW times at least) and leave.  But, running into battle blindly, dying, then yelling at your /Mo healer for not healing you, and subsequently quitting... THAT is getting fucking annoying.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Neskah on 07 Jun 2005, 14:29
I almost quit playing Guild Wars, because I was paying it the wrong way (Yep)

I was so hyped about GW coming out. I used to play FFXI, My flatmate played WoW and out Friend played CoH. So GW was a chance for us all to get together. Was so Hyped!

Then they delayed the release in NZ. I got mine on time, but my friends had to wait a week. I left my Collectors Edition on the Desk, unplayed, waiting for my friends.

So CoH guy got his, and took a few days off work to play. He created a guild with his CoH pals, and rushed into every quest possible. I tried to catch up as the whole point of me getting the game was to play with my friends. But nay, working a 40 hour week, with an average of 10 hours travel, i simply didn't have enough hours in the day. So I got left behind. THEN to add insult to injury, I got demoted for not playing enough! I was the 1st person invited in the guild and I get demoted because I'm not unemployed and don't have 20 hours a day to devote to playing?

My best friend and Flat mate stopped playing as she too was tired of being left behind and abandoned by her friend so she returned to WoW and I was left in GW with a Mesmeriser I hated feeling like an Idiot.

I had pushed my Mes passed Kryta at level 12 before I realised I was never going to catch up as my friends wouldn't bother to wait. I had missed half the story in the game by rushing through, and I just wasn't having fun.

So I created my Ranger, as I had loved them in the Beta. I took my time, Enjoying the stories and quests for what they were instead of something to get out of the way untill i got to the "good stuff". I did every single quest I could find pre Searing, and found some wonderful places I had missed before (like the catacombs entrance in Barradins Estate). I played my strengths (instead of being a wanna be ranger in a Mes body). I was level 8 before I did the Searing this time and only because i ran out of quests to do. I explored Piken Square with Henches and Earned 5000 exp on my own.

Now my guild Help me as they've raced throu 2 fast and tend to get bored. I get given upgrades and Weapons that they can't use that help my Ranger Kick arse. I made it to the Courthouse i never knew existed and strolled around Dragons Gullet for fun, I managed to make 1000G just from being there, and got to see monsters I'd missed while "racing" my Mes thru the game. I'm now level 12 and have only just done the 1st 2 co-ops for this character. But I'm far stonger and can play my character better then most others at my stage.

My Advice to ppl tho who compare GW to WoW or another MMORPG is Don't. It's about Playing the Game, not Clocking it. Sure I'm eager to get to the HoH, and so on, but it'll still be there later and there's alot to see in the meantime.

Post by: ElRodente on 07 Jun 2005, 18:08
exactly my feelings, i gladly was forced to play like that, and began to enjoy it more, as the longer missions i couldnt do (im still only up to frost gate at level 14, and that's cause i ran out of missions in ascalon and got desperate)

My friend, who has managed to rush ahead, has ascended, and got every skill, and is now incredibly bored with the game and keeps saying "hurry up and get good so we can go in the HoH" and im like "fuck you, im having fun where i am" and him being the jackass he is says something along the lines of "n00b, hurry the fuck up"  then half an hour later is asking if he can help with anything

but he does give me stuff, so it's all ok

my other friend isn't quite as hasty, though he had pretty much finished the story at about level 18, because of the earlier friend rushing him into it.

as a result, he doesnt play so much anymore.

i tend to space my playing out a bit, as you can't start to feel it's a bit tedious, as is bound to happen when you play any game constantly.

my advice is... if you're going to rush through recklessly, don't bother, start a pvp character, and gather skills... roleplaying mode is for roleplaying, not being the best.

LOL Before I wised up and Played my own way I had a go at my friend for basically 'Abandoning' us.

Well i wouldn't say i 'had a go' rather i tried to explain why I was disappointed that his idea of 'playing with your friends' meant that you played the same game with other people. He didn't get it at all and felt victimised, that everyone was having a go at him for nothing... so i sent him this to get my point across.

also: the other night i did the mission where you arrive at Lion's Arch (not the d'alessio seaboard one, the one before Lion's Arch) with henchmen.  i had just won a new skill, i think it's called "Seeking Blade", and i wanted to try it out in place of "Power Attack".  i started running through the mission to see how it felt, but everything was undead so i couldn't see how many times it caused bleeding & so forth, unfortunately.

so anyways, to cut a long story short i got through the mission fairly quickly and easily. afterwards my friend at work tells me that it's supposed to be "very hard" with henchmen because they all stand around getting poisoned in the swamp.  totally weird.  either i got really lucky, or i've just gotten used to the ineptitude of the henchmen around me and as such try to herd them about, out of trouble.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Sideways on 08 Jun 2005, 08:19
The more henchmen you bring, the smarter they seem to be.  If I take 5 Henchies with me into a mission, I never have a problem.  If 5 of us take one henchy into a mission, we're constantly fucking babysitting it.

It's strange.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)

I find that the later levels, the henchmen are just useless.
Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Sideways on 08 Jun 2005, 10:50
I guess it really depends on what you play, too.

My main is a lvl 16 W/Mo, so he can solo REALLY well.  I brought him, a few nights ago, into Dragon's Gullet... and I was able to clear out huge groups of Hydra all in one run.  I eventually ported back to Ascalon only because I'd run out of room in my inventory for all my salvaged stuff, and resellable items.

So when I take 5 Henchies out into the world, I don't find them to be useless at all... they just make my life so much easier.  They take some of the focus away from me as I completely decimate everything in my path.  :P

Well, I finally bought the game.  I went through 3 retail outlets before finding one that had a copy available.  Right now I have one character, a level 5 Elementalist/Mesmer named Vinek Nesak.  The fist name is an anagram of my real first name (you can guess it, and some of you alredy know my first name), and the last name is an anagram for "Snake."
This'll probably stop me from studing for the class I'm takning over the summer (of course, I rarely study for anything anyway).

Right on!

I'll be buying a copy of the game for my friend this weekend, and I'll also be giving her my old video card.  She bought an all-in-one computer (video/sound processing all done from the motherboard) and while my old video card isn't exactly stellar (GeForce 128 meg) it's certainly better than what she currently has.

Luckily, even though everything is on-board with her system, it is upgradeable.  She has some PCI2 slots, and I think one or two AGP slots as well.

By leaps and bounds?

I've been playing sporadically.  I still love the game, I just can't seem to get any real focus in it.  I'm totally ADD when it comes to this game, for whatever reason.

I log in, and tell myself that I'm going to get my main guy to the next town, then I remember that I have some old missions, so I wander back to do them, but get sidetracked and wind-up farming for good items from the Lightning Drakes or something, then logging out.

Totally ADD'd.

hit level 16 on my Warrior today.  i'm at the Wilds mission, but i think that i'm going to pass on it for now and try to explore/fill in my map a bit.  i am trying to run to Quarrel Falls or the third major city asap, because apparently i can get a sword skill called "Final thrust" there, and it's awesome.

i was using it on a PvP character i made this afternoon, and it is very very nice.  1-32 damage, doubled if your target is under 50% health.  i used the normal "paladin" build except i swapped the mending enchantment out for Healing Breeze (i think) and swapped the rez spell out for the rez signet.  i took the armour that lessens the damage you get & a duellist helm (+1 to swords).  was a lot of fun.

at first i was worried about the sword skills that they had set (Sever, Gash, Galrath's slash & Final thrust) as they were all adrenaline-based, but they seemed to be ok in practice.  gave me plenty of damage, while the healing spells that they gave me helped keep me alive.  was a pretty good build, i think.

i am currently about halfway through level 17 and have been on some adventures lately.  i solidsnaked it through some kind of heavy (to me) area (can't remember what it's called) to the Temple of the Ages the other night.  that was a lot of fun.  i started out with a full complement of 5 level 12/15 Henchmen, but at one point we were set upon by a group of lvl 20 mobs, so i did what any valiant young warrior would have done & abandoned them.

when i got to the Temple i found that i could take 7 level 15s with me, so i did.  i stealthed (well, as well as a party of 8 people can) through the badlands of that area and into the easier parts, then made my way south, through Stingray Flats & into Fishermen's (something or other.  Cove?).  i did a couple of quests there & reached the Mission just below Stingray Flats (which is two ahead of the one i was up to at the time, i think).

all in all it was an assload of fun.  what wasn't fun though was babysitting a bunch of morons through the bonus to the Gates of Kryta mission.  a level 20 Elementalist was forming up a bonus-only group, then just as we were about to enter a couple of them started bitching that they needed the mission, too.  we reluctantly agreed, then spent the next half hour resurrecting them.  we eventually dropped out, formed up again with just the two of us + henchmen and did the bonus without any of our uber low-level henchmen dying.  i am totally and utterly amazed by how dumb the players that made the first run must have been.

If you don't have the temple of ages yet, start from Bergen Hot Springs, and go west then north to the temple of ages, where you can have 8 people in your party. Get some higher level people, and you can do it.

apparently you can do that Galrath's quest with just a couple of people.  one dude runs in and aggros everything, then runs back a ways before they die. then you get to watch Galrath and his cronies turn on one another for some reason.  Galrath will die, you get the job done, rez the dead dude & go on your merry way.

i'm level 18 now, btw. need to hook up with a bunch of actual, live players soon in order to do the Aurora Glade quest & get through to the Henge of Denravi.  i tried doing it with Henchmen, but i couldn't do the the capture-the-portal thing at the end with them.

Im not even lvl 20 and i know that!

A QC Guild will begin to exist probably tomorrow.

I will use my necro, Zethro Max or my elly Mystarra Palidrom, to make it.

Sugested Idea for QC Clan Cape design:

Colors: PintSize colors (sky-blue and ????-green)  or something like that, I know color choice is limited.

Insignia: Something that has to do with QC (I am not familliar with all the designs).

Pattern: Don't care

Cape Edge: Don't care

Those are my ideas for a cape design, what do you think?

My characters include:

Warrior/Necromancer Lvl 20, Beat the game, Missing 1 elite skill and many regular skills to go (and 0 skill points)
Ranger/Monk Lvl 18, stuck in the desert
Elementalist/Mesmer Lvl ?, In Post-Searing Ascalon

Since I only have 256 RAM (PC 133 RAM seems a bit expensive), and my internet keeps disconnecting (must call tech support), I don't play much, and use henchmen when I do. Sometimes I'm amazed that I can beat certain missions with henchmen...

I'm using my Ranger, Druid Mael, but I can't do missions or join groups, since my internet connection would probably disconnect halfway through whatever I'm doing and cause people to hurt me after...

When RAM/Internet problems get resolved, I'd be happy to help/play with anyone, but I'm already part of a guild.

So if anyone wants to pvp on the American Server just msg me and I'll 9 times out of 10 come. I can run a Protection, Smite, or a Healing Monk build. And a few builds with ranger

I lost interest in playing.  :(

It's a Wicked game, there's no doubt.  I just wanted something more traditional... something where I could gather items, and get patterns/recipes, and craft things, and choose from a wide selection of trades/professions, and have near-limitless weaponry options available to whatever character I wanted.

I... I gave-in.

I'm sorry.

I bought WoW.

GW is still a really good game, of course.

WoW is just MUCH more suited to my tastes, after-all.

Bump time for this. I've been playing this a lot. I made a new character the other day, she's a lvl4 Necro/Ranger, and actually already better than my main. I need people to play with, my guild usually only has one person online at a time. My new character is Lol Emo Goth, so add it to your lists if you want to.

I kinda felt the same a little time ago ... I'm just so used to Item Drops and all the ''old-fashioned''-stuff - I mean, GW has interesting new stuff and all, but I kinda like the old stuff better.
Thats why I started to play Stuff like some old FF Games and the good 'ole Diablo2 ^^.

But I'm thinking starting GW again and start building up a Ranger or maybe an Ele Mage ...

Ok so I was semi-addicted to the game for a while and am still in the guild ranked 200ish (People Who Pwn). Was in a guild that got up to 47 but they crashed and burned lol. If anyone needs any help I ahve a couple of level twenty RP characters, but mostly PvP and am always happy to jump in. I can play any class in PvP so call on me if you need anything I get bored sometimes and if I'm online and not doing guild stuff chances are I'll come to your aid. My "official" MMO name is Varnoth Narscithm, but you'll likely see me on as Kipland Dynamite (name made as a joke PvP character in beta and just used him when game came out even though that movie is a bit old and wasn't that great in the first place). In PvP you'll see me as Ward Against (insert witty class specific name here). Just mention QC and I'll instantly be your friend :). Sorry if I'm a bit wordy, but I'm not so great at expressing myself.

Nothing's stopping you just getting Factions, and you can always buy the original later and add it to your account if you want the extra content.  I think it's going to be better value buying GW and then Factions, as you probably won't want to play the large amount of low-end content in GW after doing the high-end stuff in GW:F.  OTOH, if you buy Factions first you'll have access to all eight professions instead of just six.  Swings and roundabouts, do as you will.

Factions does have its low end stuff.  However, it's designed to ramp you up to level 20 quite quickly (which is why the quests now showing up in LA have such big XP rewards - so people can cross over more readily).

Sorry, I don't know US sellers so I can't run a search.  I've just heard that it's selling at that price.

One word of advice, though - don't buy a used copy.  It's worthless as the key can only be used once, and even if by chance you get the account passcode you'll be banned for violation of the EULA if caught.

Good for you - a lot of people get stuck on Elona because they have no clue.

Dunes of Despair is trivially easy.  Just do it with henchmen.  Ignore the Siege Wurms, stay close to the Hero and keep an eye out - no worries.

Thirsty River can be tough if you don't know what you're doing, but with a semi-decent party it's not too hard.  The trick is to time your runs, and to kill the bosses in the right order.

In the second area (the one with two bosses), run straight ahead at the start - nobody go right or aggro any packs there.  Kill the pack outside, then go into the Temple and take out the Priest.  Once he's dead the rest of the pack won't respawn, so get everyone inside the temple and kill the bad guys.  Then head outside and wait for a time 15 seconds before a two-minute breakpoint (1:45, 3:45 etc).  Timed right, you won't kill an enemy before the clock rolls over the breakpoint and so you'll have two full minutes to wipe out the guards and the Priest.

The last area has three bosses, which is tougher but oddly also easier.  As soon as you start, turn right and run the entire party straight into the first Temple - ignore the guards.  Kill the Priest, then hole up in the Temple killing things.  After that it's the same as before - wait for 2x+1:45, then charge into the Temple and kill the Priest.

The last boss is tricker, because he's a Monk boss.  Kill the party of guards outside, then head into the Temple.  This time, though, you want to have some of the party attack the boss instead of all piling on the Priest.  You do this to make the boss heal himself instead of the Priest, making it easier to kill the Priest.  Once the Priest is dead, kill the boss.

Also, if you're a Ranger, Warrior or a Monk you should bring a Signet of Capture on this mission.  The Mesmer and Necro elites are naff and the Ele elite has been nerfed, but Word of Healing is the single best healing spell in the game and the Warrior and Ranger elites are both excellent energy management skills.

Thankyou, although i found out what the problem was. Although all my virus and antispyware etc was all configured for GW, when Zone Alarm updated it set its internet security to the highest level, so my computer was in "stealh mode". I had to drop it back down to medium so that my computer could be seen. YAY GW!

A lot harder now they took out the gear trick.  Still, a good balanced party shouldn't have much trouble.

55hp monks are pretty awesome, i have been getting them to power level my SS necro lately. You can also make a 55hp invincimentalist (55hp elementalist) build. That is also pretty awesome. :D

Right up to the moment someone slaps Conjure Nightmare on you and kills you dead in under three seconds, anyway.

You can make a 55 character in any class with a Monk primary or secondary, although Warriors and Rangers have better ways of staying alive indefinitely.  However, you're horribly vulnerable to degen and enchantment-stripping.  Mesmers must be avoided at all costs, and a lot of Necros too.  Knockdown Eles and interrupt Rangers can mess you up as well.  Realistically, there's no use for a 55 character other than farming limited sections of the game.

Post by: jmrz on 10 May 2006, 03:49
Yeah, i do agree, and they are aweful expensive to make as well. Although you can make your money back if you are willing to power level people.

Ah 55s can avoid having strip enchgantment raping them with the elete skill i have called spell breaker.

I can't stasnd the Kurzick cities...I can't actually see anything =/

The problem is you can't have two elite spells at once. And if i am soloing with my SS necro, i need SS. I haven't got factions yet, so i have no idea about it. Did play the preview event though.

No, they can't.  It's not possible to keep Spell Breaker up permanently, even with a 20% Enchanting mod, 16 Divine Favour and using Arcane Echo.  There's also half a dozen skills that can strip it, most notably Well of the Profane.

Grr, when 55 monking you need a necro to ss your enimies that are trying to rape you and killing an mesmers that come, but while the necro is trying to kill it you keep spell breaker up. That's mainly the plan this works if you're going ecto farming with only 2 people.

55hping is good when you're too lazy to do anything constructive or when you need some $$$. The only problem is, the good 55ing requires favor so that u can get in to Underworld. Underworld of course requires Spell Breaker etc, but there are areas you can farm much more easily without carrying SB at all.
I find one of the best places to do this is inside the Troll Cave outside of Droknar's Forge. The build i use for this includes no SB or Bonetti's Defence like my Underworld build has but rather Shield Of Judgement and Zealots Fire, which are both damage dealing attacks. This means of course that you dont need to go double and can farm trolls all buy yourself, increasing the quality and number of drops.
It's also a really easy run to get there and really easy to stay alive while the whole lot of 20ish trolls are attacking you at once and having them die within about 30 secs. You can PM me if you'd like me to show u sometime (IGN = 'Spble Someone' / 'Smelly Monk Fish').

Title: Guild Wars (Official thread)
Post by: Fabio on 20 May 2006, 05:07
if you're going to use your 55 to just farm trolls it's a waste of money making one, i use my warrior to kill those beats, without fail, it's actually alot easier with a warrior, beacuse the trolls can't really interupt important skills.

also, i have never had ss but i heard it's freaking awsome is it mesmer or necro skill, i have no idea =/

Also there was a QC guild but i think it died + i wouldn't be able to join my guild is to freaking awsome and in a 10 guild luxon allience with over 250K faction.

if you're interested anyone just say ;) (yes i will stop whoring my guild now)

Also couple this with the factions skill "reckless haste" which makes most of their attacks miss but makes them faster but even if they do miss i think ss still hurts them ;)

What do any of you guys think of starting a QC guild :P?

Anyways, I've got a lvl 20 R/Mo and a lvl 15 E/Mo, so add Tann The Hunter to your friends list and message me if you wana party/need some help, I'm almost out of stuff to do in the game!

I've finished factions now, with my w/mo

IGN : varlo marine

My allience had 500K luxon faction once, then it went donw to 400K -_-

there is some cool stuff at the end of the game, new armour, +5 energy swords ;)

I'm up for helping people who are stuck and also still recruiting people :P

I could go for being recruited - and helping people too.

I'm really just too lazy to farm and all my runes have plummeted in worth so I'm still trying to scrounge up the lask 30k for my 15k armor set and then I have nothing else I'm interested in buying/accomplishing, except maybe finally choosing a faction.

I took my first foray into Guild Wars the other day having purchased Factions, and after a couple day's play, I am a level eight Ranger/spiritualist.

Look for Khaulu Tarn. I'm still around Shang Jea Monastery at the moment (I'm having a spot of trouble with that bloody Red Frog mission - the two NPCs keep getting killed)

I got him to level 8 like two weeks ago, and have barely touched the game since. I should probably come back to it at some point. I have a feeling I have a while to go before my character becomes really any good, and I think I need some help getting started really.

Post by: Lichen on 17 Jul 2006, 23:40
KCHS alliance leader is looking for new guilds to join up. The focus of the alliance is PVP mostly, but nobody is going to force players to PVP if they aren't into that. The other guild in the alliance is Imperial Death Squad. They are very GVG, TA, and AvA oriented. So there is almost always somebody to find in the alliance to PVP with. Alliance leader is also possibly considering joining a bigger alliance. That's kind of up in the air. I imagine the alliance would have to be pretty kick ass in order for that to happen. Some background about KCHS, it is a guild that was formed for fans of Penny Arcade webcomic strip. Any fans of Penny Arcade are welcome to join the guild if they are interested.

You can contact the alliance leader who goes by Xfire or RandomEngy.

Or visit the website at

W/Mo Pyscho Men Tal (sword mastery)
E/Me Anita Angers (air magic)
Mo/N Asean Monk (healing)
A few lowbies
19 R/Me Psycho Mental (marksman)
14 A/N Ghin Lelanh (um, i forgot)
15 Rt/Me Atina Angers (i forgot)
I played guild wars for a bit more than 1 year.  Any help needed and I will answer your call.  Oh and mention QC or I will ignore :D  My sister plays the Rt and E.  I am currently guild less and I don't play much.  I can PvP and PvE.  Been to UW and FoW multiple times so I know what I'm doing.  Also my W/Mo has the 60k granite citadel armor.

Also I realise I messed up the spelling on my W/Mo and A/N.
