Title: OAO: Mix Tape Trade Response Thread
Post by: Robbo on 21 May 2005, 10:20
Well, as I've picked up my Mix-CD today, might as well start this. As people want feed back of course.

Got mine from Faker, who even with my dislike of almost everything he listens to, was kind enough to cook up a mix of Irish Metal for me.

Track list:

Abaddon Incarnate - I Will Nail You
Hexxed - Primacy
Primordial - The Burning Season
Mael Mórdha - Pauper of Souls
Belinus - Magturied
Wreck of the Hesperus - Inheritance
Geasa - Souls of the Fallen
Condemned - The Killing Objective
Devilmakesthree - Feed the Greed
Mourning Beloveth - It Almost Looked Human
Pogrom - Fury of Silence
Waylander - Emain Macha
Scald - Paled
Thy Sinister Bloom - Lunar Seas Rising

I know of about 9 of those bands (on closer looking, I dug up info on all of them, but that in no way means the bands are well known or known at all), though I've never heard anything from them. And so far I'm impressed with it. Looking to be all good Metal stuff.

Thanks Faker, didn't have to go out of your way to cook this one up, but you did. I'll give a fuller response when I've listen to it all.

POST-EDIT: The Review~!
The CD is the awesome from start to finish, bringing a huge slab of Irish Extreme Metal. Every band on this CD is an Extreme band...but then there aren't very many active Irish Metal bands I can think of that do the softer stuff (Traditional Metal, Power, Prog, etc).

It covers Black Metal, Death Metal, Doom Metal, Sludge and a lot of Celtic themed/infleuenced stuff as well. A far chunk of stuff is from Demo/EP/Single release stuff, as a lot of these bands haven't even put out full albums.

I dont think there's a bad track on this mix. Even with the fact Extreme music tends to pour when it rains, for good or bad. So it was either gonna be a mix full of of good stuff or a mix full of of bad stuff.

I was sort of worried when Faker said he was going to make a Metal mix, because it wasn't something I'd seen him talk about, so I was sort of worried it'd all be Nu Metal crap...but the fact the weekend before he'd apprently seen a band where the singer took the stage covered in pigs blood gave me hope. And he didn't let me down. The first track was a nice nail you to the wall number to grab my attention and it didnt let go from there til the end of the cd.

It's a great display of what Irish Metal has to offer, specially when it's not a country you hear talked about in relation to Metal and none of these bands get any talk, even in the IMC apart from maybe a few niche places. It's a mix I could give to any Extreme Metal fan to get them to go and check out more stuff from Ireland.

Some of my favourate stuff from the first listen through is Hexxed, Mael Mórdha (man the vox is amazing), Mourning Beloveth and Primordial.

Score: 9/10

So people, when you start getting your mixes as well, just add what you got and your views. We got this working now it will be interesting to see the results.

I want to apologize to pistachio in advance, since I probably won't be able to send my CD to her until Monday, because I've been reeeeeeal busy. D'oh.

Oh, and also for the damaged ears she will suffer from listening to my mix. :)

Waylander and Primordial? Bit of a treat, though the non-inclusion of Cruachan irks me.

I'm posting mine monday, but my dads getting it done as part of his work correspondence, so it'll be in the states on thursday/friday. Got mine yesterday, but haven't had a chance to have a listen yet.

Rob - glad you liked the cd.

Khar - good to see you like Primoridal, the gig Rob refers to in his comments was actually a primordial gig, (with Scald and mourning beloveth as support)

Everyone else - if we are doing another round of trading in the future, don't be afraid of drawing my name, metal makes up a very VERY small part of my music collection, as Rob says he dislikes the vast majority of my musical preferences!

I don't know if I like the idea of giving the mix we get a score out of 10 - I kinda feel it makes it a bit too much like a competition instead of the nice friendly vibe we've got going at the moment.

Lol, ironically, Zero Tolerance just ran a huge article on Irish Metal in their latest issue, covering pretty much all the bands on Faker's CD.

Also, buggerations, I have forgotten to post mine.

I'm a reviewer, it's fairly automatic to me Inlander. But I dont see how it makes it any sort of competition. I'm just saying what I thought of the CD and giving a final view on that.

Doesn't say anyone else has to do that. And if they do, it doesn't really matter. It's not like Faker is gonna go around saying "I win, I win, I got the best rated cd" when he tailored a mix of a Extreme Metal to send to a big Extreme Metal fan.

It's just a case of "I liked it *this* much" (or could have been "I hated it *this* much"). If there's any sort of theme, as mine had, a score could be taken to show how good a represenation of that theme was to people that are interested.

Well I haven't got it won yet!

*Does pre-emptive dance of celebration anyway*

But I agree it's not a competition, just a mark of enjoyment.

Fair enough, I just thought seeing as how not everyone here knows the person they're sending to or receiving from, there's a potential for hurt feelings there if someone only gives the mix 5 out of 10 or something.  But we're all mature here so I'm happy to leave it up to individual discretion.

5: Darren Hanlon - Brooklyn Bridge
6: Souvenir - Au Bord de Soleil
7: Mum - Nightly Cares
8: The Monorchid - Alias Directory
9: All Girl Summer Fun Band - Dreamy You
10: Saturday Looks Good to Me - The Girl Distracted
11: The Smittens - Cappucino
12: The Field Mice - So Said Kay
13: The Secret Stars - Femmes Damnees
14: Paula Kelley - The Rest of You
15: Sarge - A Torch
16: Spraydog - To the North!
17: Tiger Trap - Puzzle Pieces
18: Tullycraft - Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About
19: Bearsuit - Itsuko got Married
20: The Bartlebees - What Is It All About?
21: Go Sailor - Long Distances
22: Hefner - The Hymn for the Cigarettes
23: Life Without Buildings - Let's Get Out
24: Masters of the Hemisphere - Local Government
25: Of Montreal - Nickee Coco and the Invisible Tree
26: The Secret Stars - N29 It's Alright

The first track was OK...the guys voice reminded me of someone else, I think the guy from Tann-Hauser Gate, well, it did until I noticed the australian accent...the chorus was kinda dumb, but some of the rhyming and such on the verses was pretty nice. Second song was...ok, but pretty simple. 3rd track was more classic rock, which was pretty cool. Not a bad song actually. Track four, okay, but a bit dreary and repetitive. For a song about heavy metal, track five was...well, dull and slightly annoying, tbh. I lost concentration about half-way through and answered some email. Got jerked out by that more interesting bit right at the end. Really, really can't express how much I didn't like those squeaky backing vocals though.

Track 6 was the first track I can really honestly say I disliked. I skipped a bit forwards a couple of times in this one tbh. Awful vocals and lacklustre music. Track 7 was, without a doubt, one of the most absolutely boring songs I have ever heard. What was that singing? And what WAS it singing? Track 8 was much more lively. Again, repetitive, but not that bad at all. Track 9 was awful. Sounded like radio pop, without the saving graces of real instruments or pitch correction. Track 10 was ok...kinda pedestrian though. Track 11 was...seriously, I don't see the appeal of this stuff. I looked them up online to try and find the track name (not sure about it still) and seriously, is crap like this holding up the musical flag for bisexuality? Bloody hell.

Track 12, very faint and again kinda boring, though some of the background stuff with the violin or whatever it was was quite nice. Got more lively towards the end...I notice at this point that many of the songs on this CD seem to do this, and it's kind of beginning to get old. Track 13 was pretty low-fi and, well, just quiet, Didn't sound too bad for all that though. Track 14..uh...her voice is one of the most horrible things I've ever heard. Is she 12 or something? Track 15 gets off to a much, much more promising start, then kinda reneges on it, but not actually that bad at all, really. 16 wasn't too bad either, despite the boring intro and stupid play-off vocals. 17 has, what is this, a riff? But then the vocals...do any of these bands have the same vocalists? Just out of interest. 18 was ok, I guess, but some fool had let someone with no vocal register do the vocals and recorded the whole thing on a dictaphone.

Track 19 achieved at points something very close to the anathema of everything I consider good music. I'll give it points back if that was a real fairground organ, but I fear not. Track 20 was...another slightly glum twenty-something guy with a guitar and some drums. 21 replaced him with a girl. 22 was another slightly angsty love song. I think I noticed a slightly glum twenty-something guy, some guitar and some drums too. Also, I don't like smokers. 23. uh. She should learn an instrument if she wants to be in a band. Really.

By now as you may have guessed, I'm kinda regretting having agreed to listen to this thing all the way through. I was naughty and skipped about thirty seconds earlier but I will be strong. 24 is, like so many of these tracks, utterly bland and inoffensive, so there's no REAL problem in listening to it. Track 25 introduces some different instruments, but then cruelly reveals that it was just  a crap intro. This song was both dull and annoying. More of the second though. I gritted my teeth through song 26. I think one of the keys on her keyboard was stuck. It kept banging down pointlessly and out of tune with her soft, entirely forgettable, bland and soulless singing. And then for some reason there was the sound of someone cleaning a window mixed up into a Dr. Who sound effect. Wow.

If we rate these things out of 10, then I'd have to give this a 1.5/10, and that's being nice. Sorry, but I could never, ever, ever like pretty much every band on this CD. Some of it is ok background music though.

EDIT: Paragraph'd

I'm all for posting the playlists, but I think that quantifying and rating this takes the joy out of it.  The idea is to send the other person music you like and enjoy and give them a taste of it, it seems to be rather poor taste to then turn around and tell them you think their taste in music is shit.  If you don't like certain tracks then you'll just not listen to them.

I was merely commenting on Khar's rather... frank review. It was a little damning tis all. Which is fine, I guess, it's his opinion, but I'd still be pretty upset if that was the responce to my CD. All of which I thought could be eloquently summed up with "woah".

Could have been worse. Someone could have sent Khar a CD primarily comprised of The Pippettes, and similar bands - at least in this case he admitted that some of the songs were okay!

You send a Metalhead and Prog fan a cd full on Indie Pop...what do you think's gonna happen with it? If you know the person you're sending to doesn't like your music, getting upset over it is just a waste.

This set up was never gonna get smiles all round, but oh well. Half the run. I look forwards to Kai's reaction to my CD, should be golden.

heh, yeah. it sounded kind of strange when i listened to the mix before i sent it... i just tossed all my favorites into a playlist and randomized them. i specifically put that one at the end though... it'd be just a bit weird to have that song between some of the other stuff on the mix. ^_^

But, ya see, my CD isn't metal as such: out of 23 tracks, only 13 are in any way metal, and those cover some pretty damned bizarre and outlandish subgenres. There is rock, folk, industrial and punk to contend with as well: A mix which covers the range of my taste, and I'm pretty sure contains at least one track that anyone can like (different tracks for different people of course)

Not just Hefner, but the best damn song they ever wrote! Funnily enough, the copy I have of it is on a mixtape I got years ago the theme of which was early Idlewild. Damn good tape, it was my first induction to Throwing Muses, Moss Icon and Yo La Tengo too.

Ahh, it's all right, I honestly wasn't expecting him to be that into it.  It was a mix of things that I really like and I already knew that we had completely opposite tastes.  I wasn't about to go digging around for three-hour recordings of mimes growling about wyverns just to get a good review.  And to tell you the truth I was baiting him with All Girl Summer Fun band and the Smittens ("Capucine" is the name of the song, by the way).  I scanned the cover before I sent it, too.

I've just received mine, from pistachio - and astoundingly fast as well, it must have been teleported here or something!  I've literally only just put it in the C.D. player, but the track list looks quite delectable (any mix that includes both Cat Power and Tenacious D is all right by me!), and there's lots of stuff I haven't heard on there.  Songs are as follows:

1) Cake: "Rock and Roll Lifestyle"
2) Cat Power: "I Don't Blame You"
3) Ben Harper: "Burn One Down"
4) Colin James Hay: "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin"
5) Damien Rice: "Woman Like a Man"
6) Dave Matthews Band: "Some Devil"
7) Dispatch: "The General"
8) Donovan: "Catch the Wind"
9) Great Big Sea: "The Night Patty Murphy Died"
10) Jack Johnson: "Bubble Toes"
11) Old 97s: "Murder (or a Heart Attack)"
12) Shout Out Louds: "100 Degrees"
13) Sister Hazel and Blues Traveler: "All For You"
14) Splender: "Yeah, Whatever"
15) Vanessa Mae: "Classical Gas"
16) Tenacious D: "Fuck Her Gently"
17) The Shins: "Kissing the Lipless"
18) The Killers: "Indie Rock and Roll"
19) The Postal Service: Sleeping In"
20) Warren Hayes: "Fallen Down"

Amy, as per your request I'll let you know what I think, probably by P.M.

5. Les Savy Fav - Blackouts on Thursday
6. Mission Of Burma - Fame And Fortune
7. Wire  - Three Girl Rhumba
8.  Talking Heads - Life During Wartime

2. Machine Head - Message in a Bottle
3. Primal Scream - Kill All Hippies
4. AC/DC - Back in Black
5. Iron Maiden - Can I Play With Madness
6. Faith No More - Land of Sunshine
7. Feeder - Insomnia
8. The Smashing Pumpkins - Zero
9. Auf Der Maur - Real a Lie
10. Pixies - Debaser
11. Bush - Everything Zen
12. Incubus - A Certain Shade of Green
13. Stone Temple Pilots - Dead & Bloated
14. Audioslave - Show Me How to Live
15. Soundgarden - Superunknown
16. Alice in Chains - Dam That River
17. Rob Zombie - Superbeast
18. Rammstein - keine lust

Now, I had being given the impression that this CD was going to be loud, so to do it justice, I turned my stereo up a fair way, pressed play, and stepped back to a safe distance. While I listened to it, I didn't look at the tracklisting, so as not to be prejudiced against any of the tracks, and (despite wanting to do so quite badly about 3/4 through) I didn't turn it down at all. Now, the first track I already knew and loved, and while I may have heard track 2 at some point, I was still pleasantly surprised when I realised what song it was, and it's a very interesting cover version. Track 3 was probably quite good too. Unfortunately, it all soon took a turn for a worse, now, if there's one genre of music I can't stand, it is "ROCK!" music (as opposed to just "rock" music), a genre virtually encapsulated by bands like AC/DC and Iron Maiden. I think track 6 might have been alright, but I tell you it came as quite a relief when the familiar sound of Feeder started playing. Now, I don't own any Feeder albums, but hearing this song, which I know faily well, made me think I should perhaps consider getting some. It also reminded be of this time when this girl (who I am, incidentally, very much in love with) fainted at a Feeder gig. Ah, memories... I don't think I liked the next track, but I did rather enjoy Auf Der Maur, but strangly didn't like the Pixies much. From then on I think it all got a bit "ROCK!" for my liking, I particularly remember what I think was the Stone Temple Pilots' song, having the terrible lyric "I'm smelling like a rose that someone gave me on my deathbed" or something, which later changed, presumably to really force the point home, to "I'm smelling like a rose that someone gave me on my fucking deathbed". How silly. The start of the Rob Zombie track came as quite a relief, and that, along with Rammstein, who I quite like, made for quite a nice end to the CD.
Now you must realise that when I talk about liking songs in the above paragraph, it is strictly within the confines of the type of music on the CD; I don't particularly like, enjoy or would choose to listen to that kind of music, but if I know that's what I'm going to be getting, I can appreciate some of it. I would say about half the songs on the CD I could listen to again, and I think that's not bad going. Also, in terms of mix-compiling, it was a pretty good job, in terms of how the end of one song flows into the start of the next, although I might have eased up a bit earlier at the end (not that Rob Zombie or Rammstein are particularly eased up tracks, though)

I'm quite liking what I've heard of the second CD, a review will be up soon!

Nice review. Its good that people are listening to things they would usually not hear.

I'm definatly going to get involved if there's another one of these...
I didnt think anybody would actually do it.... (*is a fool* )

I received a mix of international (mostly) punk tunes from jeremy.  I must say it is quite excellent.  Nearly every artist on this disc is unfamiliar to me and that is saying something.  The songs get by on more than the novelty of being international and obscure - many of them will make their way into my daily listening for some time.  Faves include (but are not limited to) De Press: Monuments, Adaptatsiya: Zhin v politseiskom and Hang on the Box: No Sexy.  Jeremy also included extensive liner notes enabling me to sink many $ and hours of free time into learning more about these bands.  Fantastic, 10/10!

No Sexy is a great song, but there's actually a lot of other tracks on 'For Every Punk Bitch And Arsehole' that are even better! If you get hold of it, it will make you very happy indeed I imagine.

Dual CD monster mix thing PART TWO

Numero Dos: Calm Down Dear..It's only a shoddy mixtape
1. Lemon Jelly - Kneel Before Your God
2. Röyksopp - Eple
3. Manic Street Preachers/David Holmes - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next (The Class Reunion Of The Sunset Marquis Mix)
4. Air - All I Need
5. Doves - Firesuite
6. Elbow - Red
7. Blur - Caramel
8. Faith No More - Evidence
9. Mogwai - Dial: Revenge
10. Dirty Vega - Days Go By (acoustic)
11. Daft Punk - Voyage
12. Groove Armada - Inside My Mind
13. something indecipherable that looks vaguely like 'nanobi - kote'

A nice contrast to the previous CD, this one is filled with laid-back chill-out style music. You can't really listen to this stuff closely, so I had it on in the background while I wrote the other review, and it's very nice. Again, I wouldn't choose to listen to music like this; when I listen to music I want to listen to the music, whereas this is more suited to being in the background, but all the same, I can appreciate it. I didn't recognise the Manics song, even though I have it on CD, but I did recognise Air. Doves and Elbow lived up to my expectations of being nice in a slightly uninteresting way, given that I can't remember anything about their songs, Caramel I knew and liked, Mogwai I recognised because of the singing in Cymraeg, as it were, one thing I've never quite got about how people talk about Mogwai, I think it's mainly because of Americans, but everyone talks about them as if they're some kind of ambient post-rock band, but I've always viewed them as just another British indie band, along with, well, every other British band I know. I suppose it's because I'm not detailed enough about my genres when it comes to bands I've known about for ages. It's like when people call Hundred Reasons an emo band, and I think what? They're just a British indie band. But anyway, this was an alright song, and in the context of the CD, quite good. I really liked the ending of the Groove Armada song, I thought it would be a good place to finish the CD, but there was one more song, which, like the rest of them was quite nice. So yes, for what it is, a very good job was done with this CD, and I may well put it on in the background when I'm doing something in the future.

So overall, quite an interesting and contrasting experience with the CDs I received, but then within each CD there wasn't that much room for variety. But I've heard a lot of good stuff over the last couple of hours, and the whole experience of getting mixtapes from other people is definitely one I would like to repeat.

Having been overwhelmed by exams for the last week, I will finally post my mix tomorrow.

After reading alll of these reviews and seeing all the work people put into their sleeves and what-not I feel like the sleeve and mix that I made are crap :(.... I could've spent more time on them.... sad Amy

Oh well, guess I'll just have to get on the next one and try harder!

You really think people are gonna care about the sleve art (in the sense of, wow it's some 3 colour picture someone drew in 5 minutes, must mean it sucks)? It's about the music, not an art expo, so I really wouldn't worry.

If you can make nice pictures, good for you, I can't. But if not, oh well, I got plain black text on white paper..I didn't care.

Hey, I liked the sleeve art on the mix you sent me, Amy!  Minimal but kinda jaunty.

As for the mix itself - well I'd be lying if I said I liked everything on there, but that's inevitable isn't it?  But there were several songs on there which I've known and loved for a while (Cat Power, Shins, Tenacious D, etc.), plus - and this is a big plus - I'd never heard of Great Big Sea before, and they absolutely blew me away.  I'm a Pogues fan from way back, so I'm definitely going to track down more stuff by Great Big Sea.  So in terms of introducing me to a potential new favourite, I'd call the mix a resounding success!

well, yay! I absolutely love Great Big Sea... I'm a huge fan... especially since my dads a Newfoundlander... so I grew up listening to that style of music.... but yeah, glad you enjoyed it.

I can't wait to get my mix.. I'm a little nervous.. but I'm pretty open to all genres of music... so it shouldn't be too bad, I might even like it.. *gasp!*

I just got mine from MilkmanDan in the mail, too!  It's pretty awesome.  Also, it has a special bonus CD in addition to the main CD.  This is the track list for the main one (called "Happy Songs"):
1. 65daysofstatic - "Retreat! Retreat!"
2. Venetian Snares - "Hajnal"
3. Mr. Scruff - "Blackpool Roll"
4. Jurassic 5 - "Swing Set"
5. Lemon Jelly - "A Tune for Jack"
6. Four Tet - "As Serious as Your Life"
7. Ugly Duckling - "Journey to Anywhere"
8. Fingathing - "Walk in Space"
9. Amon Tobin - "Get Your Snack On"
10. Dosh - "Rock it to the Next Episode"
11. Random Number - "All Things Become History"
12. Plaid - "Gel Lab"
13. Prefuse 73 - "Pagina Dos"
14. Cinematic Orchestra - "Flite"
15. Aesop Rock - "Daylight"
16. Boards of Canada - "Turquoise Hexagon Sun"

I've only heard a few of them before (Jurassic 5, Lemon Jelly, Four Tet, Amon Tobin and Boards of Canada) since it's mostly outside of the genres I usually listen to, so there's a lot of new stuff for me.  I think Venetian Snares are pretty rad, and that Fingathing song is totally what space pirates listen to when they are sailing their booty back to their hideaway.

I'll post the other CD track list later since it's in my car and I'm pretty lazy.  That one has more of a hip-hop focus and is also nice.

I just got my cd from Robbo today. Tracklisting:

1. Fuck... I'm Dead - Twist of Death
2. Jesu - Friends Are Evil
3. Sauron - Thrash Assault
4. Ambeon - Ashes
5. Axis of Perdition - Born under the Knife - Live in Pain
6. Arcturus - Kinetic
7. Callisto - Black Hole
8. Nasum - Inhale/Exhale
9. Until Death Overtatates Me - Carelss, Painless, Far Away
10. Demichich - (Within) The Chamber of Whispering Eyes
11. Dream Theater - Instromedly (Live)
12. Ulysses Siren - Leviathan/Above the Ashes

I've only heard of two of these bands (Dream Theater and Fuck... I'm Dead), and have only listened to one (Dream Theater).  At the moment of writing this I've only listened to the first two, but they've both been awesome (Jesu has singing rather than growling! gasp! And fuck...I'm dead rules.) I'll edit this post once I finish the whole thing.

Also: Muffy, sorry about the delay, I just got it in the mail yesterday. >_<

Kai, I'm shocked you managed to read my crappy hand writing on the cover sheet. Sorry about that, lost the printed sheet and I was in a rush in some free type. You only missread a few things.

9. Until Death Overtakes Me
10. Demilich
11. Instrumedly (Live)

9 and 11 where probably obvious apart from my bad writing. Again, sorry about that one.

But anyway, be interesting to see your full views. Some stuff you may well ahte, but it's sort of a decent mix of soft/brutal stuff and a few odd combos, like Jesu.

*tries to find notes that were taken on songs*

Alright then.

I don't think there was any actual track I didn't like on here. Sauron is some fast shit and nicked their name from LOTR, Ambeon is suprisingly mellow, calm, and has singing and synthesizers. Axis of Perdition blew up my face. Arcturus reminded me of Dimmu Borgir before they sucked (Death Cult Armageddon = Ew). the Opening riff of Callisto made me think it was going to be something along the lines of the NME "saviors of rock" bastards. Until after that. Then it rocks out with growling and GEETARS.Nasum is crazy. seriously. I have no idea what the guy is saying, but I know it's not about Kittens. or Lollipops.  Until Death Overtakes me starts out with some orchestral... piano...melody.. thing. Then it sounds like an Earthquake is starting. THen back to piano. I'm waiting for the music to actually start, but I have time, seeing as it's 11 minutes. Back to the Earthquake noise. Back to Piano. Tis time it has a big drum too.then it Ends. Start next track. Demilich. I really like the opening guitar part there, I'll have to look that up. Infact, this whole song sounds awesome. And the singer sounded kinda like a Bullfrog. Like he's singing in burps. And the guitarist is still awesome. I keep cracking up at the voice. Next track. DREAM THEATER. live. So I can expect a full dose of John Petrucci guitar wankery and awesomeness. They sound alot better and more progessive live. Moving on. Ulysses Siren. They blast immediatly into the heavy, CHUG CHUG CHUG  noise. THe singer has a pretty raspy voice, but you can understand him pretty well and it fits.

And that's that.

I'm slightly shocked you like all of it, considering some of it is sheer noise and some just ambient soundscape stuff, which you've expressive some dislike for in the past.

But cool, glad you liked it all man.

Post by: Robbo on 30 May 2005, 10:51
Ahhh, yeah, UDOM is Funeral Doom stuff. It's just dark rumbling soundscapes that paint pictures of loneliness and loss for an hour or see. To be arty about it. It gets heavy at times, but it doesn't do the exploding thing.

All the tracks on there should be a decent show of the bands stuff. There may be hope for you liking Dream Theater yet maybe, heh. And yeah, Demilich have some of the most messed up Death vocals ever.

I have received my mixtape! Exciting, no?
First thing to mention is that the packaging is awesome. Even the envelope is sweet, as it says 'New Zealand' on it about 6 times, just to reinforce how badass it is. Hell, the stamp has a picture of somewhere called 'Cape Kidnappers'. That's cool. Anyway, open up the envelope, and you get this:

It's bright, it's colorful, it has my name on it. What more could you want? Some sort of guarantee that it's gonna be hellacious, that's what. Fear not, it states that is 'THE BEST CD EVAH * infinity'. This is the kind of reassurance I want, even before you take the '* infinity' into account. So then I open the case. Dry ice billows everywhere, the camera cutting to a higher vantage point in order to get the birds eye view. Emotional piano starts up, and the figure of a crazy, telepathic girl named River takes shape through the white fog. No wait. That's Firefly. This is what was in it:

Tracklist and cunningly origami'd letter. Also, copious liner notes about every song in extremely bright colours. Some serious effort going in here. First impressions from the tracklist:
I've listened to 3 of them before (The Album Leaf, The Flaming Lips and The Arcade Fire). I like the first two, but the arcade fire I thought were kinda meh, even putting aside the massive hype. Most of the rest I've heard of, in a positive way, mainly mentioned on this very forum, but haven't checked out. So now I'll actually know what you guys are talking about. My views will follow. I took notes as I listened and everything. Hardcore.

1. Hot Hot Heat - You Owe Me An IOU
Twas funky. The intro was excellent, and the vocals a lot less unpleasant than most bands. Hell, even the bits with singing were pretty good.

2. AC Newman - Miracle Drug
Alright. Didn't really do much for me.

3. Decemberists - Los Angeles I'm Yours
Grew on me. Still not too sure about the intro, but when the drums kick in it's all good. I only really got into it for the last chorus bit, but on the relisten, the whole song is great. Except the intro.

4. Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
My friend is always telling me to listen to DCFC, but I've always been hesitant. The singing is alright, but the instrumental interlude bit is pretty kick ass. It's good.

5. Chopin - Prelude No. 15 Op. 28 "Raindrop"
As usual with classical music, I appreciate what I'm hearing, but I just can't get fully into it. However, the liner notes state "My favourite composer & song to play on the piano", so I spent most of it going 'Woah, you can play that?' I'm easily impressed by musical talent, probably due to my total lack of it. I was humming it when I ate lunch, so I guess I was into it more than I thought.

6. The Album Leaf - On Your Way
I really like The Album Leaf, so this was all good. Not much else to say, as I liked it already

7. The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone
Wow. I love this song. It's got enough glitchy weirdness and bleeps to excite the electronica kid in me, and its also got a funky, bumping groove.  I even like the vocals. The switchup at about 2:15 is KICK ASS. Best track on the CD so far. More! I'll check these guys out Fo' Sho'.

8. Modest Mouse - Bukowski
My initial reaction was 'meh'. Second time I listened to it I liked the intro alot, but thought the main song was boring. Third time, quite like it. Still think the intro is better than the main song though.

9. The Exploding Hearts - Sleeping Aides & Razor Blades
My first thought was that teh intro sounded just like Blur - Parklife. But it doesn't really. Not sure why I thought that. Whatever, not great. Bad vocals.

10. The Shins - Know your onion
Ok. Didn't grab me.

11. The Flaming Lips - Do you realise?
The Flaming Lips doing their thing. One of my favourite tracks by them, so yeah. Good stuff.

12. Iron & Wine - Such Great Hights
Acoustic guitars and whispery vocals aren't my scene. I like the imagery of the lyrics though. Just need to sing them better over a decent tune.

13. The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
I'm not invulnerable to indie hype, so i know that these guys are supposed to be the saviours of the best thing ever. I gave them a try a while back, and thought they were meh, but this is a tune. I'll have to go and recover 'Funeral' from my broken harddrive and give them another go.

14. Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Timorous Me
For about 2:30, its a great voice and an average song. Then it comes in kinda funky and it's a awesome track. Then it ends. The good bit is too short, only 1:30ish. But it's good.

15. The Black keys - 10AM Automatic
Kinda reminded me of The White Stripes, with the retro, raw vibe. Probably blasphemy or something to compare them, which shows how much I know about this kind of music. That's the fell I was getting. Meh song.

16. Wilco - Just a Kid
On the Spongebob Squarepants OST apparently. The song's alright. Spongebob is better.

17. The Magnetic Fields - Absolutely Cuckoo
This song made me laugh, because I was supposed to be revising magnetic fields, among other things, for my Physics exam in a few weeks while I was listening to this CD. The song was alright. My Anecdote was better.

18. Sunny Day Real Estate - 8
Louder. The name rings a bell, but I'm not sure where I've heard of them. Uninspired.

19. The Clean - Anything Could Happen
Too quiet, unimpressive vocals. Reminds me why I don't like bands with singers, which the rest of the CD was doing a good job of making me forget.

20. Greg Johnson - Ball Gowns & Small Towns
Not sure about the 'trippy' effects bit in the middle, or the woman saying "Sometimes you don't know anything until you dance". It sounds like something out of Flashdance, or some crap like that. The rest of the song is good though.

Favourite tracks:
The Postal Service, The Arcade Fire, Decemberists, Hot Hot Heat.

Overall, I really liked the CD. I've listened to it about 4 times now, and I only got it today. I don't like every track, but there aren't any I really dislike, just a few that don't really do anything for me. Loads of stuff I haven't heard before, and some of it was awesome. Bring on the mixtape exchange round 2!
In other news, my fingers are now covered in glitter from the sparkly orange pen in the liner notes, and tired from typing this enormous review up.

Overall Score: scores-out-of-ten-are-silly / 10

Ah, I thought with what you seem to listen to that Man Is The Bastard Noise might go down well. I do love that track. I'm glad you liked some of it, and that it finally decided to show up. And you enjoyed Submission Hold and the Minutemen too, which pleases me since they're two of my favourite bands. Mint!

I've pretty much given up hope that the person doing my tape is going to send one. They don't seem to have been on the boards in weeks. Oh well, hopefully I'll have better luck next time.

I like it!  The tracklisting you put together is amazing.  I must say that when I opened it I was excited to see that someone else likes has heard of Iris DeMent.  That's something that brings me back to saturday mornings when I was younger, my mother would have that on her stereo as she fried the bacon and eggs.

I'm not one to really evaluate tracks on their technical merits, so we can skip that part.    If pressed to pick a least favourite I'd have trouble.  A fair amount of the tracks are subtly political.

On last comment, VulgarGrad is ska, and ska like it was meant to be done, none of this third wave stuff, but old school.

The accompanying track listing is incredibly descriptive, if you still have it saved you should post it here.

Without further ado:

Ahh, I'm glad you liked it.  Yeah, VulgarGrad are pretty damned awesome, though that's pretty much the only ska tune they do.  They only formed earlier this year and have built up a big cult following in Melbourne amazingly quickly, though unfortunately they're on hiatus for a few months while the lead singer is in Poland.  I was lucky enough to pick up the C.D. at their last show.  Try to imagine about 100 people crammed into a tiny bar all dancing madly to that tune!

Anyway, for those who are interested here are the track details I compiled - all four and a half pages of it.  Feel free to skim!

1) Franz Liszt: "Ave Maria d’Arcadelt"
Phillip Thomson: piano
From The Complete Piano Music, volume 4 (1995)

In addition to being a great composer, Liszt was also a wonderful arranger of other people’s compositions. – in this instance, of a piece by Jacob Arcadelt, a Dutch composer of the 16th century.  Liszt struggled with his Catholicism throughout his life, and in true Romantic fashion expressed his inner turmoil in his art.  When I listen (or, indeed, play) this piece of music, it’s as if I can hear Liszt’s struggle to resolve his doubts and anguish, and the result is something truly beautiful.

2) Darren Hanlon: "Hiccups" (Hanlon)
Darren Hanlon: lead vocals, guitar, banjo
Lee Hillam: backing vocals
Geoff Towner: bass guitar
Bree van Reyk: drums, vibraphone
From Hello Stranger (2002)

Darren Hanlon is one of my favourite singer-songwriters.  His wit and love of words – not to mention his seemingly effortless talent for writing simple, catchy melodies – can be clearly heard throughout this song, which is a crowd favourite whenever he performs.  He’s also one of the all-too-few Australian artists who sings in his native accent.

3) The Sundays: "Can’t Be Sure" (Gavurin/Wheeler)
Harriet Wheeler: lead vocals
David Gavurin: guitar
Paul Brindley: bass
Patrick Hannan: drums
From Reading, Writing and Arithmetic (1990)

Possibly one of the best pop bands ever – and this song is from what is certainly one of the greatest pop albums.  The Sundays virtually defined the modern indie-pop sound way back in 1990 with songs such as this one.  A special moment to listen out for is when the drums finally kick in in full and the whole song opens up like a flower.

4) Sam Cooke: "Chain Gang" (Cooke)
Sam Cooke: lead vocals
others unknown
From One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 (1963)

One of the earliest soul stars, and one of the greatest.  Sam Cooke was Otis Redding’s favourite singer, and judging by the reaction of the audience in this recording from a club in Florida in the early ’60s, Redding wasn’t alone in that opinion.  Cooke’s studio recordings are generally much more polished affairs – but this is the singer in his element and at his best.  Like Redding, Cooke died tragically young: in 1964 he was shot by the manager of a hotel in Los Angeles.

5) Deborah Conway: "Buried Treasure" (Conway)
Deborah Conway: lead vocals, guitar
Willy Zygier: guitar, backing vocals
Bill McDonald: bass
Michael Barker: drums
From Epic Theatre (Limited edition release with the album Bitch Epic) (1994)

I’m a sucker for a good live album, and this has long been one of my favourite performances, from one of my favourite albums.  Deborah Conway has been around on the Australian music scene since the ’80s, when she was part of the group Do Re Mi.  Her tough yet cheeky image is perfectly captured in this song.

6) The Waterboys: "Old England" (Scott)
Mike Scott: lead vocals, electric piano
Anthony Thistlethwaite: tenor saxophone
Steve Wickham: fiddle
Trevor Hutchinson: bass
Dave Ruffy: drums
From The Live Adventures of the Waterboys (released 1998 – recorded 1986)

Recorded live at the Glastonbury Festival in 1986, when the Waterboys were at the height of their popularity.  The Thatcher years in Britain produced a lot of great protest songs, and you could be forgiven for thinking when you first hear the intro on electric piano that this is going to be in the worst tradition of stiff and earnest calls to arms.  But then, in a moment of sheer musical brilliance, the drums and the bass enter when you least expect them to, shifting the whole rhythm of the song sideways and making it impossible not dance along.  Lyrically this is one of Mike Scott’s strongest songs – particularly the 4th verse, which builds to a damning indictment of English society in the 1980s.  This performance is simply amazing.

7) Underground Lovers: "Dream It Down" (Bennie/Giarrusso)
Maurice Argiro
Glenn Bennie
Vincent Giarrusso
Philippa Nihill
Derek J. Yuen
precise credits unknown
From Dream It Down (1994)

The title-track from what I think is one of the best Australian albums of the 1990s.  The Underground Lovers were a much-loved Melbourne band whose members have since gone on to various solo recording projects and – in one case – even the directing of a feature film.

8) Vincenzo Bellini: "Ah!  Non Credea Mirarti"
Maria Callas: soprano
Nicola Monti: tenor
Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, Milan
Antonino Votto: conductor
From La Sonnambula (1957)

I first heard this when I went to see Atlantis, a documentary about marine life by Luc Besson.  The majority of that film was scored with god-awful rock/pop songs composed specially for the film – and then, in one scene, out of the mire rises this beautiful music by Bellini.  Maria Callas’s singing voice was by no means perfect, but it had a wonderful humanity that leant an extraordinary depth of emotion to whatever she sang.  Bellini’s operas are pretty silly, really – La Sonnambula is all about a sleep-walking young woman who is mistaken for a ghost – but he could sure write a lovely melody.

9) Billy Bragg: "Everywhere" (Trooper/Griffin)
Billy Bragg: vocals, guitar
Peter Buck: mandolin
Elliet Mackrell: violin
Cara Tivey: piano
Wiggy: bass
From Don’t Try This At Home (1991)

You must have known you'd be getting this one!  One of those songs that gets you right in the gut.  It’s not afraid to be complex about how it deals with war (note the line “I believe to be here is right”), and it’s all the more powerful because of that.

10) David Beniuk: "In Goulburn" (Beniuk)
David Beniuk: vocals, guitar
From Port (1996)

A terrific singer-songwriter from Wollongong, New South Wales.  Goulburn is a country town about 200 kilometres south-east of Sydney, and it’s best known for two things: the Big Merino (a giant concrete statue of a merino ram) – and the Goulburn jail.  In the best tradition of protest/folk music, this song manages to elicit the listener’s sympathy for somebody – a prison inmate – who would not normally be given a second thought; in other words, it humanises the character.  This is done not only through describing the prisoner’s hardships, but also in revealing how far he’s fallen (at one point in the song the character laments “I played for Parramatta” – referring to the Parramatta Eels, a first-grade rugby league team from the working-class Western Suburbs of Sydney), while never flinching from his flaws (“I’ve got a wife, a girlfriend and three kids”).

11) Billie Holiday: "On the Sentimental Side" (Burke/Monaco)
Billie Holiday: vocals
Buck Clayton: trumpet
Benny Morton: trombone
Lester Young: tenor saxophone
Teddy Wilson: piano
Eddie Durham: guitar
Walter Page: bass
Jo Jones: drums
From Lady Day – the Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia 1933-1944, disc 4 (released 2001 – recorded 1938)

Not one of her more famous performances, but my absolute favourite.  It’s so intimate, with just Holiday accompanied by a guitar (the full band doesn’t come in until right at the end).  A special moment is when Benny Morton steps up to the microphone for a beautifully simple trombone solo – it’s not much more than just a run-through of the song’s melody, but just listen to how he plays it!  The guitar here is played by Eddie Durham (also a fine trombone player), who was one of the very first musicians to start experimenting with creating electric guitars way back in the ’30s.

12) Iris DeMent: "Our Town" (DeMent)
Iris DeMent: vocals, guitar
Mark Howard: guitar
Stuart Duncan: fiddle
Pete Wasner: piano
Al Perkins: dobro
Roy Husky, Jr.: bass
From Infamous Angel (1992)

Pure, classic country – real country, that is.  I (along with many other people) first heard this song when it was featured in the final episode of Northern Exposure.  For the next 10-odd years it resided in my mind as just the merest memory of something beautiful, until earlier this year a throwaway remark in a review of DeMent’s latest album finally answered my question: “Who sang that song?”  All this time later, it’s still as perfect as I remember it being.

13) Miles Davis Quintet: "Bye Bye Blackbird" (M. Dixon/R. Henderson)
Miles Davis: trumpet
John Coltrane: tenor saxophone
Red Garland: piano
Paul Chambers: bass
“Philly” Joe Jones: drums
From ’Round About Midnight (1956)

This is the perfect jazz performance, from one of the great jazz groups of all time.  This, the first Miles Davis Quintet, was together for barely a year, yet in that time they managed to record no less than six albums.  This tune is from their final album, and is – in my opinion – the pinnacle of their output.  This was the most perfectly balanced and contrasted of bands: the most famous aspect of it is the partnership between the introspective yet self-confident Davis and the extroverted yet still slightly uncertain Coltrane; but (as with all great bands) the foundation lies in the brilliant rhythm-section.  Garland, Chambers, and Jones function as a perfectly integrated unit, and yet all three players – indeed, all five players – have distinctive musical personalities.  For me, a (lapsed) piano player, the highlight of this recording comes after Davis and Coltrane have taken their solos, when Garland plays what is my favourite piano solo in all of jazz.

14) Elle Osborne: "Still I Love Him" (Trad. arr. Osborne/additional words Osborne)
Elle Osborne: vocals, fiddle
From Testimony (1999)

Proof that not all folk music is deadly earnest!  As with David Beniuk, I first saw Elle Osborne when she performed at the National Folk Festival in Canberra about five years ago.  She’s an English folk musician who, on stage at least, plays fiddle and sings simultaneously – no mean feat!  The enjoyment she so clearly gets from reviving old folk songs is infectious.  And it’s pronounced “Elly”!

15) X: "The World’s a Mess; It’s In My Kiss" (Doe/Cervenka)
John Doe: vocals, bass
Exene Cervenka: vocals
Billy Zoom: guitar
D.J. Bonebrake: drums
Ray Manzarek: organ
From Los Angeles

Back when they made real punks on the West Coast!  X were one of the classic bands from the original punk era, documenting life on the fringes of Los Angeles, their adopted home town: this song comes from their debut album, which over the course of nine tracks covers topics as diverse as date-rape, suburbia, and the gay cruising scene.  The album was produced by Ray Manzarek of the Doors fame, who was a great champion of the band in its early days and who even played organ on a couple of their tracks – including this one.

16) Desmond Dekker: "Get Up Edina" (Dekker)
Desmond Dekker: vocals
others unknown
From Israelites: Anthology 1963-1999 (released 2001 – recorded 1963)

The King of Ska.  Dekker became friends with Bob Marley while both were working at Standard Engineering in Kingston – but with or without youthful links to Marley, Dekker’s work stands on its own.  His most famous song is probably Israelites; Get Up Edina is not one of his better-known performances but it’s a highlight for me.

17) VulgarGrad: "Anarchy is Our Mother" (Tsoy)
Jacek Koman: vocals
Andrew Tanner: bass balalaika, backing vocals
Svetlana Bunic: MIDI organ, backing vocals
Renato Vacirca: drums, backing vocals
Ros Jones: trombone, trumpet, backing vocals
Nara Demasson: guitar, backing vocals
From VulgarGrad: Popular Songs of the Russian Underclass (2005)

A little taste of the Melbourne music scene for you.  VulgarGrad are a local band who formed earlier this year and have quickly built up a sizeable cult following.  The singer is a well-known actor of Polish origin; and the trombone-player and the drummer are both friends of mine!  This song describes how a soldier, walking home one night, happens upon a group of young men drinking and swearing and generally carrying on.  On demanding to know who their mother is, they reply: “Anarchy is our mother, and our father is a glass of port!”

18) The Four Tops: "I Got a Feeling" (Holland/Dozier/Holland)
Levi Stubbs: lead vocals
Renaldo “Obie” Benson: backing vocals
Lawrence Payton: backing vocals
Abdul “Duke” Fakir: backing vocals
others unknown
From On Top (1966)

Forget the Temtations, forget the Supremes – for me, the best group at Motown was “the Tops”.  Levi Stubbs’ voice simply oozes soul, and the group never underwent a line-up change or had to deal with an out-of-control ego.  Amazingly, “I Got a Feeling” wasn’t released as a single, making it only to the b-side of “Bernadette”, a single off the next album.  One of the great lost treasures of the Motown library.

Inlander: If you don't already know, the song "Anarchy is our mother" is a cover of the famous Soviet underground new wave band Kino. They recorded it in 1986,  as a humourous take on the Sex Pistols! That's why the lyrics are so ridiculous. It's a great tune, and I'm pretty happy to know that somebody else realizes it, even though I've never heard of Vulgargrad (nice name, too...hahaha). If Vulgargrad's singer is Polish, then it's not really surprising that they would cover this song, since Kino (and in particular their leader, Victor Tsoi) have attained a legendary status not only in Russia but throughout the whole east bloc. Moscow punk band Naive also covered this song on one of their recent albums.

Not sure if I could take it as a ska tune, but hey...to each their own.

"Mama anarhiya - papa stakan portveinu!" =)

Thanks for the info, jeremy.  I knew it was a cover - VulgarGrad's whole repertoire is a mixture of covers and traditional songs - but I didn't know who did the original.  It's not surprising you haven't heard of VulgarGrad: they've only been around for a few months and they're very much a cult band within the (very small) confines of Fitzroy, here in Melbourne.  Their C.D. was, I think, self-financed and limited to a very small number of copies sold at one of their shows.

And trust me, it works very well as a ska tune.  I'd be happy to email it to you if you're interested.

Got my cds yet, Brittany?
Title: OAO: Mix Tape Trade Response Thread
Post by: jeremy on 08 Jun 2005, 02:09
I got my mix cd from El Opium yesterday, and just had the time to sit down and give it the attention it deserves.

First, I must say, the packaging is very cool. Handpainted cardboard with velcro clasps. And it's nice to get a bit of info on each artist/track on the included tracklist.

I am familiar with Dead C (better than I remembered) and Sonic Youth (about the same as I remembered, and I still don't like them), but the others are all new to me.

The Swans track didn't do anything for me. I'll have to check out some of their earlier material, as they certainly seem like the sort of thing I'd be pretty impressed by if only they were a bit wilder.

I liked The Fire Show's use of strings, but not the use of distorted vocals or whatever the hell that effect is on the vocalist's voice on the first line. I dunno. Too many bad memories of early/mid 90's alt-rock crap like Filter or whatever. I know that has nothing to do with this song/band, so...moving on...the vocalist's voice is pretty annoying. And maybe it doesn't help when he's singing "I'm soft inside / I'm not so ba-aa-aa-aad." Uh...yeah, I'm sure your mom says your cool, but I'll just have to take her word on it.

The Empty Flow...a Finnish band, although it's not exactly a sound that I associate with that country. It's kinda nice to hear something a bit different from Reindeerland, but on the other hand I really can't like this. It does remind me of the Cure (as El Opium noted), but unfortunately I don't like the Cure. It is all very pretty.

Circle (also from Finland) would be a hell of a lot better if the vocals didn't annoy the hell out of me. I really enjoy the Finnish language set to rock music, which I suppose is what this is, but this is missing the sort of frantic delivery I think makes Finnish rock so much fun. Of course, I'm more likely to pick up an Eppu Normaali record or something before any Finnish prog rock. Still, I'm glad I was exposed to this, in the same way that I'm glad I was made to read James Joyce when I was in high school, even though I know I'll probably never read him again.

Skullflower: Hey, this is neat! A big droning noise and repetative riff. And no vocalist to ruin it. I could do without the little two-note lead guitar bits that pop in and out, but even those fit in with the overall concept, so they don't distract too much. If I got stoned, I'd listen to this in the process.

Lau Nau: No! No, baby-voiced Finnish woman with wimpy harmonies and sparse acoustic guitar accompaniment (which gives me nothing to focus on when she starts in with her howler monkey impersonation at about 3:42)! If I want a woman playing solo acoustic guitar and singing, I'll listen to some Yanka Dyagileva. At least she had some fucking cajones.

Pan Sonic: I don't like techno. Ever. Sorry. Why is this song 7 minutes long?!

Le Fly Pan Am: I'm sure glad I don't know who Godspeed You Black Emperor are, or else I might be prejudiced in listening to this track. As it is, I don't like this. It seems like they shoved as much random crap as they could on top of what would've been a very lackluster song to make...a very lackluster song with a bunch of random crap going on over the top of it! Meh.

Yellow Swans: I swear to god my washer made this exact same noise last time I tried to wash all my bedding at once. You see, if you overload it or load it unevenly, it starts freaking out, throwing clothes all around, splashing water everywhere, and...whew. It's a big mess. I should've known better.

Gang Wizard: Hey, this DOES sound quite a bit like Dead C. That's pretty neat. More close to home, they also remind me of a California (I think) band that were active in the mid-90's called Monoshock. Monoshock put out one really, really amazing double LP in about 1996 called "Walk To The Fire." It is MUCH better than this, but I stupidly sold my copy about 5 years ago. I wish I could find it again. Damn this track for reminding me of it! (though I did enjoy it a bit)

Slowdive: If a song runs for 6 minutes, shouldn't it go somewhere? I mean, I could see this being given away in every 100th bottle of Nyquil or something, but other than that...what purpose does this sort of music serve? It's not really BAD, but if I played it around my girlfriend, it would depress us both, and she would call me a pussy. And she would be right. Not because music has anything to do with a person's masculinity or femininity, but because this really does sound like if that guy from Oasis fronted PM Dawn, and that's the most sappy movie love-scene sort of music I can imagine. I listen to a lot of what I guess could be termed "wimpy" stuff (new wave, mostly), but this just strikes me as schmaltzy. And that's a word at 1:51 in the morning. That's the word for this.

Charalambides: Before the vocals come in, the music reminds me of the original music in "Amores Perros." That's a great film. This song is not so good. When the vocals start, I sorta cringe because it reminds me of the Finnish lady warbler earlier on the CD. The difference being that there aren't any real words in this, just a lot of "oos" and "ahhs." OK, it is kinda sweet that they're made up of a husband and wife duo. Hmmm. Scratch that. Ex-husband and wife duo. I'm not making a joke out of that, but I will say that I don't really like or hate this song, but it does make me think that I could think of many better songs I could listen to with the nine minutes and forty-two seconds of my life that this song took up. Ah well.

In conclusion: I genuinely liked three songs. A lot of the mix seemed geared towards the pretty and dreamy end of things, which isn't bad, but certainly isn't the sort of thing I can listen to on a regular basis. And the loud and noisy tracks, while providing a nice counterbalance to the soft stuff, generally don't have the staying power to stick in my head once they're done. Maybe I just have an enormously thick head. I will say that El Opium did a great job with the packaging, track sequencing and variety of the material. A lot of it wasn't to my taste, but that's okay. My tastes are pretty unpredictable, so I'm just glad I found at least a few  tracks enjoyable. Thanks, El Opium!

I am definatly going to take part in the next round of this, assuming there will be one. Theres one track that I put as an opener on any mix CD, regardless of overal mood, its the kind of track that will get anyone rocking out in their underwear.

I'm glad you liked a few of the songs on there Jeremy. When I was browsing around one time I found out this Monshock comp
http://www.sl.net/~ttbooks/moolala/cat.htm
doesn't look like it includes the album though. Something tells me the album is worth quite a pretty penny these days.

Yeah, I figured as much, 'cos when I looked around for the album maybe 2 or 3 years ago it was already fetching $25+. I am an idiot.

:) no! it was good... well.. okay not GREAT but good in the sense that I listened to at least half of it more than 5 times. Im just super busy lately and don't really have the energy to  like move, or give the whole thing a proper critique.

But overall it wasn't bad, I liked the first song and the last one the best and I think it was called um something about vengeance? i REALLY liked that one. I think the Main problem I had with a lot of the songs was that you couldn't understand the lyrics, so it just sounded like mumbling, and I dont understand the point of lyrics if its just mumbling. I mean, "lyrics" like screaming and stuff that you dont understand but still sound cool, okay. But if it just sounds like gurgle gurgle slurp then I dont get it.

But yeah, you definately introduced me to some new enjoyable songs :)

I had a feeling you'd like those three songs. They're all total keepers, even though the Misery Signals one is a bit misleading when it comes to the band's overall sound (the rest of their songs feature no singing at all, just the screamy parts).

As I said in the letter, I tried to keep it occasionally melodic, so even if the songs were hard as hell, they'd have at least one part suited for the non-metal/hardcore heads. I also tried escalating the heaviness, so the hardest stuff was placed later on in the record, whereas the stuff I thought would be easier to take would be early on.

I'm glad you liked at least some of it, though. :)

SERIOUSLY... Its been almost over a year, Well actually I don't know how long it has been, but I still haven't gotten mine...
I'm going away for about 4 weeks, so it looks like mine is going to be lost...
Mnementh... Do you think you got the address wrong or forgot to put a stamp on it or something?
Or maybe it's just impossible to send anything from America to somewhere so so far away:(
I check everyday... And I'm still waiting.... *sad sad whine whine*
Or maybe you forgot to put it in the post box, and it's still sitting in the pocket of a coat you rarely use....
Woo it is kinda fun to think up where my poor lost little mix cd is...

A song for your poor mixed CD, who was lost at sea...

It's not very expensive, shall I reship it?  Or will you not receive it before you go away?

Hey hey Kai..
I've actually been off-line for ages as my computer has met an unfortunate demise, which means all CD burning equipment is defunct (I will remedy this soon, Pip - I'm borrowing a mate's computer) but...
I have received no CD as yet, which makes me sad - it may be missing post (there's still no sign of my Cursive rareities either) but I will make a special effort to get online as soon as I get it, as I look forward to what you've chosen!

Whoo! It got here! First of all, Mr. Salada, I must commend you on your design work. It made even my approach to making my mix seem lazy and underachieving by comparison. Look forward to being ripped off. :)

On the music, too, even though there isn't one track of music to pander to me, I can't say there's a single track I don't like. Particularly the hip-hop was great. And Architecture In Helsinki. I've always been curious about those guys, and I guess I was right to be. Congrats!
