Title: Knockin on Heaven's Doors
Post by: alic3sw0nd3rland on 29 May 2005, 19:55
From what i've seen this is the most covered song other than say something like the national anthem or something dumb like that. I'm wondering if anybody knows of any good covers of this song so far I have:
(my favorite) Pink Floyd
(the original) Bob Dylan
Cat Power
Led Zepplin
Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd
Jon Bon Jovi
Eric Clapton

GnR

(also you don't "cover" the national anthem. It is public domain)

I'd always been of the understanding that "Yesterday" by the Beatles is the most covered song in the world.  I've frequently read it cited as such.

Though I assume we're only talking about popular music in the rock vein - 'cause if you started delving into jazz you'd find thousands upon thousands of different versions of the likes of "I Got Rhythm", "Autumn Leaves", etc.

EDIT: on-topic - off the top of my head I can't think of any versions of the song other than those already mentioned, sorry.  It's not really one of my favourites so I don't keep an eye out.

Trad. African group Ladysmith Black Mombazo did a pretty nice version.

Warren Zevon recorded a version at his house as he was dying.  So it is pretty fitting.  His voice isn't the best, because of the cancer, but it is still an awesome song.

(Also, along the same lines as ForteBass's statement:  songs in jazz like "Autumn Leaves" or "When the Saints go Marching In" are standards, and are more often than not public domain as well.)

Depends.  What's the time-limit on copyright of a song, as far as performing it goes?  I know that for copying the sheet-music, it's 50 years after the composer's death - meaning that copyright of Irving Berlin's songs won't expire until 2039.

I've actually heard quite a number of covers of "You've Really Got Me". Otherwise, I'd have to say the most covered song was either (agreed) "Yesterday" or "Voodoo Child".

there are quite a few covers of Teenage Kicks, too...
Most noteably by Busted (yeah!) and, er, Snow Patrol.

Or fuel. But it was still pretty bad. Although in general i find her voice whiney.

I want to see king crimson cover it, with lots of eksperimenting. Or some other band. Someone who will change it, bring it into a new style or something.
