Title: Recommend me some good stuff =D
Post by: Coonstar on 06 Jun 2005, 01:35
Man I hope that this isn't too much of a newbie topic, because I don't know whether it's a regularly ok thing for users to kind of hog a topic all to their own. But anyway. I'd like to listen/check out new music, stuff that you'd think I'd probably like but are quite different from what I am used to.

Just for reference, here's my audioscrobbler --> http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/coonstar/

And this is my top 20 albums list (in no particular order)

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore
Pearl Jam - Ten
Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
The Futureheads - The Futureheads
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Morrissey - You are the Quarry
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
The Clash - London Callng
The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Of Montreal - Satanic Panic in the Attic
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Garbage - Beautiful Garbage
The Shins - Chutes too Narrow
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
The New Pornographers - Electric Version

Please recommend me albums/artists that I would still most likely enjoy but are quite different, for I feel the need to expand my musical horizons. Also just for kicks, recommend me some classic big-band jazz stuff? =D

Since you're liking the Futureheads I'd recommend checking out This Ain't Vegas on Jealous records. They're also from Sunderland so you get those cool accents, and play some great punky indie music.

The Minutemen's 'Double Nickels On The Dime' album is a classic, everyone should own it (or at least give it a listen).

Mission of Burma - 'Signals, Calls and Marches'. Easily a contender for the best indie rock album of all time.

Give them a go. Based on your top albums I'd say there's a decent chance you'll like them, but they're also a bit of a departure from that stuff.

Can do.  Oh baby, I can so do that.

Start with Count Basie.  All big-band explorations should start with Count Basie.  There are two classic Basie periods: the '30s (the "Old Testament" band) and the '50s (the "New Testament" band).  From the '50s, two absolutely essential albums are The Complete Atomic Basie (and yes, it has a big mushroom cloud on the cover) and Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings.  From the earlier band, it actually pre-dated albums so you're going to have to go with a compilation.  I don't know what your budget is, but there are two great multi-disc compilations out there: The Original American Decca Recordings (also sometimes known as the Complete Decca Recordings) and America's Number One Band: the Columbia Years.  These are both well-worth having, although if they're a bit too expensive for you there will also be numerous single-disc collections.

That's your real hard-hitting swing stuff.  For something a bit different, a bit more sophisticated, there's Duke Ellington.  Another multi-disc compilation which is absolutely essential at some point in your life is Never No Lament.  This is just about as good as a jazz orchestra can get.  Again, there should be one or more "best of" single-disc compilations of this music.  For later Ellington, a classic album is The Far East Suite.

A few other names from the classic swing years to look out for: Fletcher Henderson, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman (of course - try the famous Carnegie Hall concert from 1938), Woody Herman (1963 is a terrific album, and I think it's a limited release so you should snap it up quickly if you're interested) . . . Anyway, there's a few ideas for you.

Definitely start with one or both of those two later Basie albums I mentioned first, though.  Basie is the man.

The Residents. I mean, how can you not love guys who write songs like Ingrid's Oily Tongue, Lizard Lady, Krafty Cheese, Bach is Dead, Elvis and His Boss, Baby Skeletons and Dogs, Stuffed Genitals and the Next Song are Cut, Jimi Hendrix Dildo and The Mad Sawmill of Copenhagen Germany? Possibly the weirdest band that actually has a tune. (I'm looking at you, TMV.) I reccomend picking up either their latest work (Animal Lover) or some of their early stuff (Meet The Residents, Not Available, Duck Stab/Buster and Glen, Eskimo, Commercial Album, Third Reich N' Roll)

In keeping with my character as well:

Skyclad!

Seriously, I still see no reason why all you indie types shouldn't like them. They're light (if you avoid the first two-three albums), they're lyrically driven, they have FIDDLE! I mean, COME ON PEOPLE. Have you ever heard a fiddle vs. guitar duelling solo? You haven't lived! They sing about everything, from love, to war, to nazi vampires.

Nazi vampires = MEGA-cool.

with the Modest Mouse on your list I'd also go with Built To Spill, and Mission of Burma. As far as the Big-Band stuff goes, Inlander made every good reccomendation ever. Hopefully we can convince you to try some straight ahead, cool, fusion and latin styles of jazz.

Psssh, the Smashing Pumpkins represent some of the most decent shit on that kist.

Speaking of Skyclad, if you like the Pumpkins and can download stuff, get 'Fainting by Numbers', 'You Lost My Memory' or 'Jumping My Shadow' by the 'Clad if you have a p2p proggy, you'll appreciate their angsty, bitter (but sarcistically hopeful) side. I used to quite like the pumpkins 'back in the day', some songs especially.

Thinking of more suggestions within your field, and within the field of stuff that's actually good, Danzig, Nightingale, The Sisters of Mercy (everyone should like them anywar), Killing Miranda, Orange Goblin (another band that deserves universal love), and maybe some punk? Punk is cool.

Yeah, and SKYCLAD!!!!"

Everyone, thanks for the recommendations so far- I shall attempt to look into all of them =D Aww shucks no hating on the Pumpkins in this topic! =P They're just that one band that I am dedicated to, because they have so much lasting value, and they were kind of my gateway band into better music. Even if you don't like their music, you can't deny that they have the skills.

Yeah I already listen to the Decemberists =D The Mariner's Revenge Song = RULE

Honestly, I kinda don't like the Pixies >_> I've listened to Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, and the Death to the Pixies greatest hits- nothing just really grabbed me, sorry o_o //music taste has no cred.

This is almost embarassing but, who wants to recommend me some power metal? =P

Ahem:

Dragonforce, Domine, Avantasia, Wuthering Heights, Tad Morose, Rhapsody, Edguy, Turisas, Morgana LaFey, Angra, Dream Evil, Falconer, Sonata Arctica, Demons and Wizards, Secret Sphere, Primal Fear. For cheesy as crap but very cool stuff, Ninja Magic and Winterlong. Also, Therion's latest twin album, Sirius B in particular, are pretty power, and pretty damn cool too. Operatic metal for the win!

Heavy Metal that is similiar in theme: Manowar, 3 Inches of Blood, Hammerfall, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest (if you HAVEN'T heard those two DO SO NOW), Viking Skull, Iced Earth I suppose.

If you start liking that kind of stuff, some good Battle and Viking Metal might also be in order: Ensiferum, Later Bal-Sagoth and Bathory's Viking albums: Hammerheart, Blood on Ice and the Nordland albums in particular, though they all rock.

Hell, just download these tracks. This was a CD that came with an issue of Metal Hammer a few months ago and almost single-handedly restored my faith in the metal press:

Judas Priest - Battle Hymn
Judas Priest - All Guns Blazing
Dragonforce - Fury of the Storm
Turisas  - Battle Metal
Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal
Viking Skull - Beer, Drugs and Bitches
3 Inches of Blood - Deadly Sinners
Hammerfall - Riders of the Storm
Primal Fear - Heart of a Brave
Sonata Arctica - Ain't Your Fairytale
Finntroll - Fiskarens Fiende
Ensiferum - Lai Lai Hei
Angra - Spread the Fire
Rage - Flesh and Blood
Rhapsody - Unholy Warcry
Iced Earth - Declaration Day

\m/

AND SKYCLAD!

*cough*  I wouldn't call it power metal, but I've found Opeth to be a very solid, well balanced, and musically elegant introduction into the metal genre.  I'm not big on metal myself, so I can recommend it to someone just getting into the genre with confidence that it will probably appeal to you if you approach it with an open mind, because it did to me.

Hmmm...  I'm a bit curious if you enjoy grunge-era music?  I see Pearl Jam is in your list.

Nah I'm not really into grunge. I think Ten is the only grunge album I respect and enjoy.

Hmm which Opeth albums should I specifically check out? I have a few friends who listen to Opeth but the stuff they've shown me I never got into. What's their most accessible album?
Title: Recommend me some good stuff =D
Post by: Robbo on 07 Jun 2005, 04:40
The most accessible...probably Damnation. But that's an all soft 70's Prog Rock style album and not like the rest of their stuff.
Probably Blackwater Park I guess for a first time listener.

And get listening to that Power Metal as well, it's good stuff. Good job there are some Metalheads around for such things you know.

I have to agree with all the anti-smashing pumpkins sentiment .... but i think it's my hatred of billy corgan's whiny voice; perhaps if they had another singer i might like them (and they possibly might even sound half decent) and being on topic....

Hmm, Billy Corgan's voice wasn't originally insanely whiny. Siamese Dream was practically whine-free except for Disarm (which is a great song), but when Mellon Collie hit - the whine took over. Adore the whine was completely minimalized (and a very pretty and soft album it is), but it returned with Machina.  Hee. Yeah I understand that Corgan's vocals aren't just for some people, but it doesn't mean that the band is terrible. But for some strange reason, I feel that Corgan's vocals are absolutely perfect with the Pumpkin's style. I can't imagine another vocalist taking over and singing all those different kinds of Pumpkin songs, no matter how good of a vocalist they are- and still have the same impact.

Yeah I already listen to Hot Hot Heat, heck I went to their show a month or so ago. I went through a quick Muse phase last year when Absolution was first released- listened to all their albums except for the live one constantly, but after a few months I just grew tired of them and just couldn't get back into them again.

I've heard Damnation by Opeth before, I didn't get into it. Hmm, another album?

Okay, I'm just about to listen to some Minutemen right now =D

Mmmm... Ratatat is good stuff!  The only part of that album I disagree with is the random "hip-hop shoutouts"  where they throw in dialog for no reason.  Other than that, it's gold!

Yeah I remember reading a quote that went along the lines of "Joy Division is if Interpol learned how to write lyrics, Interpol is if Joy Divison learned how to write music." Hahah that's pretty damn insulting to both bands, I forgot where I read that from. I checked out Substance but I still hadn't gotten into it, anybody got more Joy Divison to specifically check out?

I was listening to the first few tracks of the "Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses" compilation.

AMG gives God in Three Persons a 5/5, so mabe I'll try and check that out when I can find it.

I haven't heard those three tracks, so I can't say anything about them. Alot of their stuff is just kinda 'meh' though, after about 1980 up until now, with a few exception (Mole Trilogy [part 1], Freak show, Wormwood, etc.) Although the very old stuff, such as Meet The Residents, Not Available, Third Reich N' Roll, Eskimo, and for some people The Commercial Album (Some love it, some hate it) are very good. And, if you can find a copy of The Warner Bros. Album or Baby Sex floating around on the interweb, grab it. They were never released, although it's very good stuff.

Benny Goodman

If you're gonna hit up the King of Swing, check out "Celestial Express" by Charlie Christian, which has some of the first jazz guitar playing, along with Benny Goodman's band. It's excellent stuff.

Also, *ahem ahem* YOU POWER-METAL SUPPLIERS DIDN'T RECOMMEND HELLOWEEN!!! Helloween are a perfectly stereo-typical metal band. Hair, harmonized ibanezs and jacksons, the singer has a really high ass metal scream voice, and there's a guitar solo on virtually EVERY song. I love them oh so much. And I also wholeheartedly agree to Blind Gaurdian. I also add Symphony X, but they're a whole different thing. Great introduction to prog they are. Cheap Yoda rip-off this is.

Also, as Kai to the Residents, I to the Sugarplastic. Get they're Cd "Bang, The Earth Is Round" and prepare to be indied. They are terrific. It's this awesome combination of just about everything, from Jon Brion to The Beatles to The Pixies to The Talking Heads to Elvis Costello. Amazing stuff.

Dead Souls, Love Will Tear us Apart, and She's Lost Control.  That is pretty insulting but amusing.

I'd say that they're TOTALLY different. Interpol shares more simmilarities to Clinic than JV, I'd say. It's a lot more lush and beautiful, while JV was more rough, simple, and subdued.

Yeah what I like the most about Interpol is the whole "lush" and beautiful sound to it, it's that really rich deep smooth sound. I just simply don't get the same effect from Joy Division- so I really don't get how Interpol = Joy Division.

Post by: happybirthdaygelatin on 10 Jun 2005, 15:00
Huh, I don't see Interpol as beutiful or lush.  Then again, I haven't heard them all that much and haven't heard Joy Divison in awhile either.  From my memory the comparison is kind of a desolate and simple sound for both of them.

Really though, I'm going to have to whore out Mr. Bungle again.  Check out "None of Them Knew They Were Robots" and "Goodbye Sober Day." Oh and "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare" is good.  http://www.bunglefever.com/ has some of them, look under the discography section under the album California.

'tis ok I guess, I've only really heard one track, and have never been inspired to get any more, which for me is the measure, really. It's not like, keeping it in the avant-garde field, Crotchduster, where immediately upon hearing 'Let Me Into Starfish Land' I simply downloaded all their album and started rocking backwards and forwards in anticipation of their next effort.

"BOBA FETT! BOBA FETT! VADER AND BOBA FETT! BOBA FETT! BOBA FETT! AAARRRGGGHHHH!"

Most I'll say for Patton, is that his EP with Dillinger Escape Plan is probably the least shite DEP stuff I've heard. Roughly.

Come to think of it, yeah, Crotchduster - Big Fat Box of Shit

Funniest album ever, in a good way.

Post by: KharBevNor on 11 Jun 2005, 18:17
I did, because, believe it or not Crotchduster are actually avant-garde.

All those songs about rimming grandmas and killing the Dutch seems to blind people to this fact.

These are the albums that I've been most into lately, they're all good, but wander around the spectrum a bit.

Matthew Good Band - The Audio of Being
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
Radiohead - OK Computer
Rammstein - Reise, Reise

Such a fucking good album!

Jazz for someone who likely doesn't listen to much:

Grant Green - Blue Breakbeats
Karl Denson - Dance Lesson No. 2
The Bad Plus - These Are The Vistas
The Bad Plus - Give
Miles Davis - Live Evil
Miles Davis - The Birth Of The Cool
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen - The Trio (best jazz players ever, likely the best piano, guitar, and bass players [respectively] in history)
Charlie Christian - Celestial Express
Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar
Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith - The Dynamic Duo
Jimmy Smith - Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf (may only be available on LP)
Jimmy Smith - The Sermon
Miles Davis - Seven Steps To Heaven
Miles Davis - Get Up With It
Stan Getz, Kenny Baron - People Time
<last but not least> Lee Morgan - Cornbread

many others.

Dredg - El Cielo <-- will check out. Heard mucho good stuff about Dredge.
Eagles of Death Metal - Love, Peace, and Death Metal <-- hmm.
Matthew Good Band - The Audio of Being <-- I don't really like Matt Good, listened to maybe 3 albums, I like their sound but something about Matt Good's kind of drawn out vocals I don't like- especially with his solo Avalanche album.
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze <-- heard it. Rated R is way better.
Radiohead - OK Computer <-- heard it. Good stuff, just can't listen to it often.
Rammstein - Reise, Reise <-- s'okay.
System of a Down - Mezmerize <-- SOAD's not really my thing anymore

I shall check out more of those jazz albums. But dayum, soulseek needs to get way more jazz =P[/i]

If you're willing to delve into a bit of electronica (or hell, if you're willing to delve into genius music period), I'd recommend Bjork's Homogenic or Post.

Pfffft. Garbage was the first band I ever loved. Yes of course I know Garbage, and Version 2.0, and the current one (which I do not like at all). And yes I think Beautiful Garbage is superior to all of them.

Now apologize for breaking my favorite Garbage album in two! :(
