Title: Patrick Wolf! Discuss!
Post by: Coonstar on 19 Jun 2005, 02:48
For the folks whom don't really know him, Patrick Wolf is a solo artist from Britain who does "folktronica". He's kind of British folk but uses quite a bit of electronica, but he does in an an almost organic way and it just paints such vivid scenery.

I honestly really like his music, I couldn't stop listening to Lycanthrophy today- there's just so much of his stuff that you JUST have to stand up and notice, because it's just so heartwrenching. Like that song, "The Childcatcher". That has to be the most disturbing and terrifying songs I have heard. The Libertine is a very direct good single, and some of his more mellow subtler stuff are equally good if not better... like The Railwayhouse, Pidgeon Song, and the Gypsy King.

But now. One thing I don't like about this man. His MUSIC VIDEOS! I think his presence kills the mood that he's trying to create, and you just can't take a boy like him seriously!

Am I the only person who feels embarassed for him? I have this urge to ask him to be my penpal! Just so I could write messages such as this:

"Why hullo there Patrick! Well I was sipping my instant powdered tea one night... I was struck with a thought.... and I was just sort of wondering... is there any possibility that... er... that you could be Morrissey's love child?"

Morrissey is the shiznit. But, you have to admit, they kinda fall to the same dilemma... or am I just being overly critical and picky here?

I find him to be rather amazing. The first song i ever heard by him was A Boy Like Me, I listenned to it on repeat for nearly an hr. I find his voice rather addictive to a point. I find his new album wind in the wires very disapointing compare to Lycanthropy.

Also the song your meantioned i didnt realised how disturbing it was until i was listenning to it on the bus.

I also think Bloodbeat, Paris, Don't Say No and Demolition are great.

Never seen any of his music videos.

Also he plays a ukulele live apparently...

I hear that once, he just kinda went on stage armed with a laptop and a viola. That boy, has guts.

I love both albums for different reasons. Maybe I'm biased cuz I got into the second one first.

I think Patrick Wolf is in my top five now, if I chose to pretend that his music videos never existed.

My best friend is a massive patrick wolf fan, and she seems to have rubbed him off onto me as well. I really like his stuff, both his albums, though must admit i've not had a chance to properly explore Lycanthropy fully yet. I saw him live at the Lyric in London and his voice sounds amazing live. Very evocative and beautiful.

Having said all that - I completely agree with you Coonstar with the Morrissey comparison in videoclips... but it seems to work for the girls anyways, so maybe us guys are not the target market hehe... These eccentric musicians, eh?

Anyways... yeah, definately a great artist...

Hahah I'm actually a chick, but he's not my type =P

Wow! Seeing him live? How was he like? Was a laptop included? XD

Also, question. How big is he in Europe?

Not anything near big by my estimation, I think it's only the critics that love him...in Denmark anyway...
