Title: What comic books do you read?
Post by: lastclearchance on 02 Jul 2005, 08:34
So, it appears there are comic-book readers here.  I'm interested: what series do you read regularly (as in, you get every one that comes out)?  For me there are only two series (three if you count the Coheed comics):

Thieves and Kings by Mark Oakley
Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore

I used to read Bone until it ended, and I've been reading Promethea but I didn't get into it until after it ended.  But that's really it for me for currently-running comics.

I especially want to know if anyone has a suggestion for something I can pick up.  I'm looking for a third series.  Note: I tried Fables, and while it was good, it didn't "grab" me, for anyone who was about to suggest that.

let's see if I can remember everything on my monthly pull list. It's a lot right now.

Fables
Y: The Last Man
Mnemovore
Sea Of Red
SOLO
Ultimate Spider-Man
Ultimate X-Men
Ultimate Fantastic Four
The Ultimates
whatever Ultimate mini-series they have going.
Daredevil
Marvel Knights 4
Savage Dragon
The Walking Dead
Powers
The Goon
Supreme Power
Ex Machina
Hellboy

and whenever a writer I really like puts out a miniseries, I usually grab it.

I highly reccomend The Goon, by Eric Powell.

I love Strangers in Paradise!!  I also got the 1st 3 issues of Love and Rockets that I am going to start tonight.  I'm having a hard time finding back issues of SIP though.  I'm relatively new to comics but strangely addicted nonetheless. Any reccomendations would be appreciated.  Bone is good, huh?

I read graphic novels, I don't follow comics.

Sometimes I pick up trades, right as they come out, so I suppose that could be counted as following a comic storyline... but I prefer to have my story all-in-one, or segmented into large volumes.

Single comics just annoy me now.  You get right into it... and it ends.

Most graphic novels and trades are set up to tell a whole story, or at least a whole segment to a story, and therefore you have a proper  build-up/crisis/denoument set-up, which I really like.

So, what I've read recently;

Walking Dead volumes 1, 2, 3
Sin City
Sin City: Booze, Broads and Bullets
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Sin City: Family Values
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again
(you can see I'm a Miller fan :P )
The Gift (total crap, don't bother with it)

All of which are topcow image comics i guess.

I don't think I have ever liked anything on Top Cow, except Rising Stars. I am totally perplexed by the critical acclaim all those books like Fathom get.

I read manga more than american comic books, but not as a rule.
(in no particular order)
Mars
Paradise Kiss
Peach Girl (I've sort of gone off that, though)
Fruits Basket
Meridian
Ruse
Runaways
And, since I usually don't have the money for real comics, I read a lot more webcomics than I do comics I have to go out and pay for. ):

I'm with Sideways on graphic novels.  Pretty much for the same reason as he plus the shop I go to has a 10% off them on a permenent basis.  So lately i've been reading:

BPRD
Hellboy
Sin City series (just the first book and That Yellow Bastard)
Flight Volume 1
Flight Volume 2
30 Days of Night
Battle Royale
Naruto
One Piece
First three Sandman
One of the New X-Men series
A collection of the Cable and The New Mutants (I think)
Wolverine vs Hulk
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Another marvel universe contunity mind-fuck series that I for some reason can't remember the name of.

cerebus (although, to be honest, i've only got about 3/4 of them, and it's been awhile since i dusted them off.  now that dave sim has taken a break from being fucking batshit insane and finished the set, i'll try to buy the rest out in phonebooks)
eddie campbell's bacchus

i used to be a huge fan of darkhorse presents, and anything and everything darkhorse put out (i had all those crazy alien/predator/terminator crossovers and the star wars spin-offs)
and when i was 12, i totally loved elfquest.
also, phil foglio's renditions of the myth series weren't half-bad.

Right now I'm reading The Sandman, The Watchmen, and V for Vendetta.

They're all just so good.

Yay for the Optic Nerve.  It comes out sooo infrequently, but it's always worth the wait.  Summer Blonde was fantastic too, as is his book of mini comics, 32 Stories.

The only new stuff I get regularly anymore are Popbot and Lore.  One for the big monsters, one for the cats and big robots.  Both for Ash Wood.

Stuff I'm catching up on and filling holes in:  Shade, the Changing Man(best comic of the 90's, if you ask me), anything by Kent Williams(I can't believe they got him to adapt 'The Fountain') or Jon J Muth and Empty Zone by Jason Alexander.

I really want to get a copy of Optic Nerve as i've heard sich great things about it, but i haven't seen it around any of my local comic book shops. I should just ask really.

Anyhoo, i tend to collect more graphic novels too, as i'm very forgetful when it comes to single comic books. The comics i read would be:

Tank Girl (Yesssssssss!)
Joe Sacco's Palestine, Notes of a Defeatist and The Fixer
Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things
All of Johnen Vazquez's stuff
Marrionette Generation, volume 1, 2 and 3 (I am allowed a girly japanese manga fix)
The Sandman

Oooh yes, i have that. Filled to the brim with that crazy, random humour Vasquez is so good at.

Yes! He needs to put more comics out! I mean c'mon now...it's been years. And those mini collaboration comics do not count, dammit.
Title: What comic books do you read?
Post by: happybirthdaygelatin on 11 Jul 2005, 13:50
Mini Collaboration comics?  Do you mean the guest strip kinda stuff similar to what is in Lenore? (I love the fact Vasquez always makes fun of Roman Dirge (and Lenore the charecter her self one time!)

Slightly skeptical thought but I almost imagine he's waiting till he is running low on money before he starts doing more work again.

As nifty as those guest strips are, i was talking about comics such as Everything can be Beaten. (http://www.slavelabor.com/nf_ecbb.html)

Come to think of it, i think that's the only mini comic he's put out. It probably went undetected by a lot of people, considering zee fake name and writing credits.

Y'know what? He probably is waiting till the cashflow runs dry. Until then, he's just cruising on the sweet, sweet sales of GIR plushies.

There with ya, buddy.  Alan Moore trade volumes are fabulous when he's not phoning it in (pun intended).

Mandatory are:
--Top Ten vols. I and II;
--League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (duh);
--V for Vendetta;
--The Watchmen.

His take on Batman, "The Killing Joke" I found subpar, but others have loved it.  Swampman is great, but to my knowledge is not out in trade volumes yet (I might be wrong about this though since I haven't check recently).

For graphic novels, though,  you can't in my opinion do much better than Dan Clowes (duh), and Seth, who writes rather depressed but insightful and hopeful novels for a very famous Canadian outfit called Drawn & Quarterly.  I highly recommend Seth's Palookaville, although you couldn't find more contrast to Frank Miller.

Also -- Larry Marder's Beanworld series, which defies both description & estimation.  Still looking for a complete series to purchase.  Off to ebay :-).

OMG
All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder was fantastic. You really can't do better then Miller's dark take on the Dark Knight and his city as well as Lee's superb pencils. The All Star series is to DC what the Ultimate series is to Marvel. It starts off with Dick's parents being murdered, being carried off by crooked cops and Batman interevening to save him!
I can't wait for more of this!

as being no particular fan of superhero-comics (come on, the ARE in fact crap; that's like the mainstream of comics, and you guys want to be indie..) i might not gain many friends with my selection, but some of the following you should definitely have a look at. as there would be:

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi (i don't know how many of them have been translated in english so far, in french, there are 4 volumes) - an autobiographic comic, telling the story of M. Satrapi, born in iran some years before the islamic revolution (about her childhood in iran, then her youth in austria as a foreigner, then her retourn to iran); black&white, rather naive drawing style, but extremely interesting. there is some other stuff by her as well, not (necessarily) connected with the persepolis-series

Lewis Trondheim in general, french artist, doing both 'album'-comics (like the hilarious 'donjon'/'dungeon'-series with j. sfar) and more distinguished black&white/philosophical/weird stuff like 'moins d'un quart de seconde pour vivre' with j.c. menu or the terribly good 'mildou'

a very, very good webcomic (though being published as an album in austria in a few weeks) is 'Death And The Maiden' by Nina Ruzicka. which can be found (also in the english translation) at http://www.cartoontomb.de.

i also like very much Jirô Taniguchi, a (obviously) japanese artist who thanksworthyly does not join in the manga-style of most of his fellow countrymen but does sort of graphical novels as you might find with craig thompson (though somewhat less autobiographical). unfortunately, i believe there is only very little by him translated into english (i could not find the equivalent of 'le quartier lointain' in a quick research..)

more to come, i guess..

I doubt you'll find too many people who agree with such a sweeping statement. Try reading Alan Moore or Frank Miller's superhero comics. Or The Authority. Or Planetary. Or Ex Machina...

There are plenty of great superhero comics around that are aimed at a more mature audience. Oh, and also, I don't care if reading Spiderman makes me un-indie.

ok, saying they are crap was a little to harsh (let's just call it my opinion as one who has tried them and wasn't quite - or at all - satisfied), but, hey, you can't deny that they are pretty much mainstream, right? (no offense meant).
i just tend to lose all interest in over-detailed comics and i guess i'm somewhat speech bubbles fixated plus beeing the thanks-but-no-action-movies-for-me-i'm-far-too-intellectual-girlie-type (urghs..).. euh, you get the picture, right?

@moiche
to continue (slowly) you might have a look at marcel ruijters 'sine qua non', a strange but quite funny comic (drawings inspired by medieval wood cuttings, all of the (little) text in latin - but rather understandable as even i without any latin classes, get the point)

I used to get Nightwing, Amazing Spiderman, Ultimate Spiderman, Batman:Gotham Knights and some other stuff. Unfortunately my local comic shop closed recently but at the time I was only getting Amazing Spiderman and Ultimate Spiderman.

From now on I'm gonna keep trying to get Ultimate Spiderman but anything else is gonna have to be graphic novels I think. I have the first graphic novel of 100 Bullets and it's really good. Next time I go to Liverpool I'll probably go to the comic shop and try out Spawn. Batman graphic novels seem like they're worth the effort and money as well. I wouldn't mind getting Mightwing again too.

Webcomics: I read Questionable Content and Nothing Nice to Say. I've had small scans of No 4th Wall to Break as well.

I used to read a lot of superhero stuff, and oddly enough, I still wish I could.  I'll pick up the odd issue of this or that, but for the big two, I've been completely turned off by most books that they've put out this year.  House of Inifinite Identity Crisis M to me, seems to just firmly establish that the crisis is that thye're just doing what they've done before to get to the automatic 'restart' button. It has this really weird feeling of not actually having to be read, dispite all of the hype and spin surrounding it.  It also seems very average and by the numbers dispite the intentions and 'shock' of it all.

Okay, that was a rant, what does everyone else think of the big events?

As to what I do read, I'm still finishing up the holes in my Shade: The Changing Man collection, as well as getting most Ashley Wood work, like Popbot and Lore.  Optic Nerve when it comes out, Blankets was excellent as well.  Y:TLM has been mentioned, I enjoy it.  And to completely blow what I said before, there are exceptions to the big two rule, like Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers books.  I've really gotten into them.

Seconded. Currently I'm having a bit of a Warren Ellis phase. I'm filling the gaps between new issues of Desolation Jones with re-reading all of Transmetropolitan.

I can't wait for Fell either.

I picked up some issues of Dead@17 the other day and thats really, really good too. Something about teenage girls killing zombies that does it for me.

Salamander Dream by Hope Larson is wonderful too, but not really a traditional comic per se. You can read it all online anyway: http://www.secretfriendsociety.com/index.php?p=2

Oddly enough, I tend to prefer Marvel and DC for exactly the opposite reason.  While I don't mind grittiness in and of itself, it seems too often that Image uses it in place of an actual storyline or as if to say "oh, look how dark we can be" and I intensely dislike comics (or just about anything else) that are gritty just for the sake of being gritty.  As long as good art and grittyness contribute to the development of a storyline, I think they're great.  But that's just me.

I don't care if reading Spiderman makes me un-indie.

That's the way it should be....  You should read what you like, not what others think you should like.  It's funny how "indie" is supposed to mean independent, but some people use it to mean that you can't be "indie" unless you like what we/I like.

I always have been, and always will be a sucker for Superheroes comics, mostly of the Marvel and DC variety. Indie be damned, I say!

On my pull list at the moment:
really looking forward to All-Star Superman)
Intimates
JLA
Silent Dragon (almost indie...)
All of the Seven Soldiers ('cos they're awesome)
Most of the Infinite Crisis stuff ('cos I'm a sucker)
Probably some other stuff that I can't remember right now[/list:u]

Marvel Knights Daredevil (bye Bendis)

:(

one more issue. it better be fucking amazing, to cap off this run.

It's the last arc, but there's five issues left to go. (and the first of the arc was great, in my opinion). And with Ed Brubaker and Micheal Larkk taking over after Bendis and Maleev go, it's only going to get better.

bryan lee o'malley's stuff is adorable! gogo scott pilgrim!

Scott Pilgrim (and all of Bryan Lee O'Malley's stuff in general really) is the top frickin' tier in terms of contemporary comics in my books! His art is a lot less simplistic than it initially looks, and his humour and sense of pacing are frickin' GENIUS!

Just check out this recent example from his site: http://www.radiomaru.com/comics/short/monica/

Finder by Carla Speed McNiel
Mister Blank by Christopher J. Hicks
Poison Elves by Drew Hayes

Those'd be my top three, although I partake of the Ultimate Spiderman regularly as well.

I've just been reading through my old Hellboy trades. Man, that's some good stuff! Mike Mignola's artwork is so striking - kinda simple but dramatic and "gothic" (for want of a better word). I need to get the last few that I don't have.

Has anyone read the BPRD books? How do they compare to Hellboy?

I'm following the new B.P.R.D. storyline right now.  Can't speak for what came before, but they're doing some very good stuff (and some not so good "oh s***" stuff too) with this one.  And if the Island is happening prior to or concurrent to this storyline, we may be looking at a return of Hellboy himself to the action.

Other than that, I'm mostly following Infinite Crisis right now, along with the lead in series (Day of Vengence, OMAC Project, Villains United, and tie-ins).  Some great writing is going on there, the likes of which I've always wanted to see.

Ok, my list (I'm just gonna go ahead and be the generic guy here):

1) Green Lantern in the mothaf'in hizzouse!
2) Green Lantern Corps (once again in the said mothaf'in hizzouse... you know)
3) Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder (Frank Miller... get this book)
4) Justice (Alex Ross's new gig with DC.. mmm... I'm totally hetero, but Alex Ross's watercolor skills make me wanna be turned into a great big soylent green cracker, so Mr. Ross could eat me up... teehee)
5) I also find myself always re-reading Watchmen and Kingdom Come.
6) Also, I devour anything I can find that says Madman... oh Madman, where did you go?!? It is the east, and Allred is the Sun.

I'm not too big into Marvel anymore. In Jr. High and High School I liked Marvel, mostly spidey and x-men, but not so much anymore... the old school majestic DC heroes really take me in now.

There it is. No obscure references, no foreign imports... just plain ol' DC.

Sandman byNeil Gaiman

my good friend raves about gaiman's sandman. i should probably check it out. but i pretty much just read comics for the sentimental aspect. i was one of the many that read anything spider-man or x-men related (incl. x-factor, x-force, excalibur) and dabbled in everything else marvel. in the last year or so, i've started picking up TPB's of the old series i used to read and the newer iterations of those characters. here are all of the TPB's sitting on my bookshelf...

x-men: fatal attractions   (by far my favorite x-men story arch)
spider-man: maximum carnage   (venom's a good guy!)
x-men legends: vol 1. mutant genesis   (the beginning of the 1991 x-men comic, the art style i grew up on)
x-men legends: vol 2. the dark phoenix saga   (story from a good 10 yrs before i started reading, but such a good one)
x-men & ghost rider: brood trouble in the big easy   (great crossover that picks up where mutant genesis left off)
x-men: age of apocalypse, the complete epic. vol. 2   (fun alternate reality, after the second x-men legends game, i had to buy this)
x-men: dream's end   (colossus' death)
astonishing x-men: vol 1. gifted   (joss whedon rocks!)
astonishing x-men: vol 2. dangerous   (beast finally acts like a beast)
the ultimates: vol 1. super-human   (the guy at the comic shop told me i would like this)
the ultimates: vol 2. homeland security   (the guy at the comic shop was right)
new avengers: vol 1. breakout   (OMG! wolvey, spidey, cap, and iron-man together!)

A bit of an odd selection but:
Jeffrey Brown
James Kochalka
Dan Clowes
Preacher
Transmetropolitan
Lenore

We have a great comic shop here in Bristol though, the guys in there love Jeffrey Brown and we chat about having odd rare stuff by him. Last time I went in and bought 'Damn You Frida Kahlo' and the guy was like, I knew when you came in you'd get that. And ok yeah I pretty much have a huge crush on him.
