Perhaps that's to do with Antony Hegarty himself being born in England.
Anyway this line-up in general makes me quite angry, not enough variety and nothing I'd consider to be of any interest apart from maybe that Seth Lakeman album.

*yawn* same old, same old
-
Very drab, no real innovation as usual. Of the ones on there that I've heard, Coldplay's is probably the only one that warrants any real attention, what with it being markedly better than their 2 previous albums.
-
M.I.A. and The Go! Team are alright.
The rest are about as exciting as eating cold wallpaper paste.
-
Not terrible, but not particularly inspiring.
Like most awards nominations, actually.
-
maybe someone really pedestrian and annoying will win it. then hopefully do the trick that mercury music prize winners usually do, which is disappear without a trace (let alone another album).
-
i think that Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs & Maximo Park are all listenable, but hardly groundbreaking. the Go! Team is fun, but i am not sure if i'd go as far as saying it's worthy of an award. Coldplay is boring, as usual. can't say much about the others, though, as i haven't heard any of it.
-
Awards never go to the groundbreakers. Awards are never daring or inspired, much like the bands which receive them.
-
Only heard one track by the magic numbers and to be honest i liked it as far as middle of the road pop-rock goes, good toe tapping summery tune, but won't change my life
-
Winner: Antony and the Johnsons?
Huh. Didn't see that one coming.
-
Never even heard of 'em.
-
Sound like really boring 50's Doo-wop.
-
Some punk thingy.
Meh. The British have proven themselves, once again, to be worshipers of moderately boring music in the non-hard rock/metal/Eric Clapton world.
-
Well I for one think Antony and the Johnsons are fantastic and Hegarty is one hell of a singer... the music is neat too :)
But at the same time I wanted M.I.A to win, since Arular is one sexy revolution, for me anyway.
-
Yes, Merkava, the population of Britain collectively decided that bland music is best. In the national referendum that is the Mercury Music Prize, we voted overwhelmingly for Antony and The Johnsons - it is clear, utterly clear, that no one here has any musical taste whatsoever. The only possible good response is the abolition of Britain post-haste.

I could be wrong, but I think the MMP is decided by music journos and critics, not the public. And very, very rarely do I pay any attention whatsoever to critics.
-
Ouch, guess I'm the only one coming to the defense of ol' Antony. I happen to enjoy his music immensely. I think it's gorgeous, and the man has a wonderfully beautiful androgynous voice.
The scandalous part of this whole thing is that Antony is essentially a New Yorker, but he was originally born in Chichester, thus making him elegible for the prize. I believe he was as discombobulated as everyone else when he won.
Sorry for actually liking an artist the rest of the board seems to loathe, sometimes I forget that the snob-o-meter is set to KILL in here.

If you're referring to Antony and the Johnsons, you couldn't possibly be more wrong.

Mine goes all the way to EXTERMINATE.
-
Mine's EXTERMINATE THEN FEED TO SCHOOLCHILDREN. beat that. Fucking Fascist.
-
I despise Antony and the Johnsons. It's nails on a fucking chalkboard to me. At least Bloc Party are decent.
-
I LOVED Silent Alarm the first few times I listened to it, but something about it loses energy and aesthetic quality every time I listen to it now.
It's decent music, I guess, but nothing particularly interesting to me.

My poorly-worded sarcasm is too extreme for y'all. :P
