Title: ZOMBIES!
Post by: LiterSize on 10 Aug 2005, 11:49
Ok, how were we invaded but did not have a zombie movie topic up?

Shaun of the Dead was by far the best zombie movie outside of George Romero's work.  I refuse to watch the remake of Dawn of the Dead and I missed Land of the Dead though.  Did anyone watch "House of the Dead" that movie based on the shooter?  How was it?

Shaun of the Dead > all

From what I heard House of the Dead was utter crap... directed by Uwe Boll, which seems to be a fairly good indication of what you can expect from a movie. I haven't seen it though, so my opinion is therefore void.

The Dawn of the Dead remake, I thought, was actually pretty good... it's fairly fresh and it's more of a homage than an actual remake, I mean, the plot is pretty much the same (zombies attack, people hide in a mall etc etc) but it's pretty much a new film.

I don't even know if Land of the Dead has come out over here yet. I hope I didn't miss it.

I Walked with a Zombie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036027/) is IMO v good. We are off to see the new Romero on the 26th, *woot* :)

House of the Dead was a pathetic excuse for a zombie movie; the weapons were hardly realistic and the zombies were pathetic.

Dawn of the Dead remake was quite good, it was nice to see a Zoombie take on a romero classic. (zoombie = fast zombies, a-la 28 days later, DotD remake)

Land of the Dead was a nice end to the series, but he breaks a couple of his own rules, here and there.

Anyone seen Lucio Fulce's zombie flick, Zombie 2? (just Zombie in america)

28 Days Later was very good, I think! The idea of Olympic runner zombies succeeded in TERRIFYING ME. Even though they weren't really, uh, zombies.

Seriously people, nobody's mentioned Peter Jackson's Braindead, a.k.a. Dead Alive, yet?  W.T.F.??

Going berserk with a rotary lawnmower is the only way to kill zombies.

Shaun of the dead was so great because it was a for the film geeks, by the film geeks movie, with enough appeal that it was enjoyable for everyone. Simon Pegg is a lege.

Dead Alive, was that the movie with Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo as zombie cops?

EDIT:  WAIT!  I do remember that movie!  One night late before cinemax became skinemax... awesome

I have seen EVERY zombie movie in existance.. well most of them, the fiance is a HUGE horror buff. He has so many horror movies.

Sean of the Dead- RULES!! The new DOTD was pretty damn good.

Pardon me for nagging but am I the only one who thinks it's kind of awkward to have the vampire under the word zombie and the zombie under the word vampire?

EDIT:  Hmm, I get it.  Irony strikes again.

Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town
Resident Evil
(Evil Dead?)

Thus ends the list of zombie movies that I have seen. It's a somewhat curious deficiency. Especially given the almost soul-destroyingly punishing amount of vampire movies I've seen. (Vampyros Lesbos ftw)

Shaun of the Dead is one my favorite movies ever.  What made it great for me was that it was simultaneously a zombie movie and spoof of zombie movies.  I loved how, during the most intense parts of the movie, they could insert a single line that had nothing to do with what was going on during that particular scene but would crack me the hell up nonetheless.  It was that flawless combination of comedy and horror/suspense that made Shaun of the Dead a movie that I can watch over and over and over again.

Is there such thing as a vampire movie without any lesbians in it? Is there such thing as a female fampire that isn't a lesbian?

ANYWAY.  Was anyone else creeped out by the original night of the living dead in black and white?

Dracula 2000, Salem's Lot, The Fearless Vampire Killers and Interview with a Vampire had no lesbianism. so there....:p

But all of Anne Rices vampires swing both ways. It's just because she's a dirty lady that pretty much all her characters are male.

Hmmm..... which movie set it that zombies had to be shot in the brain?  Has that always been Romero's doing?

It is 1 of only 4 films (Lost Highway (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116922/) is the creepiest film I've ever seen, we were getting ready to leave the cinema about half way thru) me & the wifeunit find creepy, much better than the 2 (/3) sequels (although we enjoyed those too).
I can't think of a pre-romero zombie movie where an issue was made of kill-technique (all the ones I can google are voodoo zombies).. IMDB says "This film has been the standard for almost every zombie film made ever since its release (zombies eating human flesh, destroying zombies by destroying the brain, etc.)"
Carnival of Souls is also creepy (but no shambling brain-eating zombies).

Night of the Living Dead is the only horror movie to ever scare me in my entire life.

I watched it once. When I was 14. I've yet to go bac and watch it again. In my mind, it is the single best horror movie ever made. It doesn't rely on the zombies to be scary. It doesn't require excessive gore to shock the audience. It just plays on pure paranoid fear of what the hell is going to happen next. There are so few good horror movies that do that.

That also why Silent Hill is the only video game to ever actually scare me.

I saw Evil Dead the other day and it wasn't really what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a horror/comedy thing but it ended up as more of a straight b-grade horror. I still thought it was cool, but there was no chainsaw hand thing or "hail to the king" line!

I hear the sequel is better though.

Do Zombies eat brains or flesh, and what possible nutritional value could be seen in eating intestines, seriously, theres poo in them, noone wants to eat poo (except maybe a dung beetle)

They wash the poo out of those first, but i've never seen a Zombie wash the poo out... I KNOW intestines stink if they are burst, I worked for a summer in a vet clinic and I've done my fair share of dissections... That's just nasty (said like Cleveland from Family Guy)

I always expected a zombie ate flesh so that the flesh would grow on their own bodies, but  since they always got killed before eating a quota that's why we never saw it.

Then again, I do like to make stuff up.

To add to the already spotless reputation of Shaun of the Dead with an all-new view of the movie is...oh fuck self introductions.

I basically liked Shaun cuz thats what a Zombie invasion would pretty much be like irl.  I mean, in just about every zombie movie (I've seen), the second zombies appear in the streets and a main character grabs a gun, he/she becomes the ultimate sharpshooter, blasting bullet holes in the heads of zombies everywhere! (until its time for him/her to be devoured).  In Shaun, he got one headshot (since the second was from an exploding bullet)

The new Dawn of the Dead was cool.  The old one has pleasing value purely for the fact that its old, it has its own remake now, and it was great about conveying our dependance on consumerism.  Plus the black dude lives at the end.  Other than that, though, everyone was insanely stupid, and the zombies were little more than staggering pieces of the scenery, i mean, COME ON!  I doubt if you tried to push a REAL zombie out of the way you could come away with your brains intact.

Course, for all you Zombie buffs, grab "The Zombie Survival Guide".  It makes THE BESTEST coffee table book/conversation starter.  Plus its damn cool.

...holy fuck guys, sorry about the novel-size post.

in my dorm last year the RAs were required to make a couple hallway posters a year; uses for duct-tape, how not to get robbed, that sort of thing. one of them was the zombie survival quick tips. it was accompanied by a zombie movie marathon. (they also had to have a few prgrams each, like 12 a semester or something. we just signed the paper when they gave us pizza)

for me the original black & white night of the living dead sets the laws of the horror zombie.
it is also the scariest/creepiest movie i think i've seen, even the re-coloured version you can buy on video.

1. re-animated corpse
2. eats flesh - not just "brrrainnss"
3. twisted parody of the living
4. slow and relentless*
5. removing the head or destroying the brain

also, i like the way that its any person whose died you can come back, not just the bitten...some how i just think thats a better idea (the satellite radiation idea that shaun of the dead nicked)

*which is scarier than fast because if its fast its over quickly, this is all about the constant creeping ever closer ever nearer not stopping for anything - no matter what you do they will get you.
