Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 06 Sep 2005, 08:57
Has anyone read these books  By George R.R. Martin? They are really well-put together, There are Three books os far and a fourth coming in november (Squee.) and a fifth with no release date. So i supposeh the purpose of this post is to revere george R.R. martin..and talk about his books i suppose...and discuss any information you might have of number 4 or five?

1. A Game of thrones-X
2. A clash of kings-X
3. A storm of swords-X
4.A feast for crows-O
5. A dance with dragons-O

Okay, due to management problems (....Spoilers and whatnot) I have put an X on what can be discussed and such, but not as far left field as you can as the one with the O's. Easy right?

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire A link!

Yes, read em they were really good, great charcterisation and believable "heroes".

No black and white bad guys good guys there. Sometimes that is exactly what you want, sometimes not. But yeah. Cool. Will have to get book four! :)

The only thing bad about these books are the extreme amounts of time it takes for GRRM to write them :(

Amen Arkmam, Heh, Although i wonder if it will be harder to follow the books if the timelines switch around between A Feast For Crows and a Dance with Dragons?

1. i love these goddamn books.  i am reading through them at the moment, and find them to be some of the best sci-fantasy books i've encountered.

2. RedLeather, your animated avatar image is 425kb.  could you please either change it for something else, or find a version that isn't quite so large? (say, ~100kb max?)

The Song of Ice and Fire series is amazing... just finished reading the first three- when I met my current group of friends about 4 months ago, they made me read them- and I can't complain.  It really is one of the few series that the only problem with them is that we have to wait for more.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 12 Sep 2005, 15:55
*Point* We may be waiting for more but, at least we aren't waiting for the last one already.

also: Dany is hardcore.  the scene with the pillow was awesome.  after everything she'd done, everything she sacrificed.  she knew what she had to do, and bam.

well 'ard.

i'm only a halfway through the first part of book 3, and my friends are telling me that Arya goes mental in the future, which i am very much looking forward to seeing :)
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 12 Sep 2005, 19:40
Danny is VERY much hardcore- let me know when you have finished- me and my friends have come up with some odd ideas behind what might happen, including who the parent or parents of John Snow just might be...
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 12 Sep 2005, 19:57
Hehe, It's always a fun topic to speculate on The Lord Commander of the Nightwatch.  What i wouldn't give to be Dany right now.  But i have a question, Who thought Arstan Whitebeard was Ser Barristan Selmy? certainly surprised me a bit.

Also Seeing Arya as a assassin, somehow just fit's the book...but ponder: What happened to *Her* direwolve? Obviously it's not dead, but will it show up again?

Tally: Ghost *Alive* Greywind *Dead* Lady *dead* ( I frorgot the name of Arya's direwolf...Damn me!) *Dead* Summer *Alive* Shaggydog *Who knows?*
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 12 Sep 2005, 20:08
Nymeria, something like that on Arya's wolf.

Caution- those who haven't read all three, don't read to far into this or you might realize some things...

See, we think the Starks will be like the Swat of the seven kingdoms.  Ricken will be some crazy axe weilding kid riding a wolf, John some sort of commander with a famous sword, Arya an assasin, Sansa (Or however you spell it) could easily be a trained mistress of coin...

Starks = Kickass
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 13 Sep 2005, 05:48
Or, Ya know, GRRM could *kill* off all the starks...and focus it's attention on another family? Although highly doubtful, since he apparently bothered to bring back Lady Stark....
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 13 Sep 2005, 16:56
I think at least some of the Starks will last- don't even start on the whole theory of Bran taking over Hodor to become a knight.

We have odd ideas.

And if John Snow might not actually be Eddards son.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 13 Sep 2005, 19:28
Ser Hodor, the great and mighty...Hodor! Heh, I'unno, i have a theory though, it's probably already been discussed by many people...What would happen if Bran just left his human body entirely? Like Jojen/Meera keep warning him about?
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 13 Sep 2005, 19:33
Well, I imagine that depends- they touch on Hodor being really dumb, etc- so I could see Bran inhabiting him or Summer... but I don't think he will make that mistake. I image the "three eyed crow" will teach him otherwise.

HOOOOOOOOODOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

I wanna see Hodor v the Mountain that Rides.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 14 Sep 2005, 05:32
The Mountain That Rides, i think died, or somehting close, because of his two-step dance with the Red Viper. Poison and all that.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 14 Sep 2005, 06:30
Naw, I'm pretty sure he might survive that- I know he wasn't doing all that well last time he was checked on, but this is the Mountain.

I've found... if you dont get told someone is dead, they very well may not be.

And hell, even if you ARE told they are dead sometimes they are not.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 14 Sep 2005, 08:36
Case supporting Eldirial's theory: Catelyn Stark...Can't talk, but sure as heck can point out (..Maybe a spoiler? Anyway the "Bonus" chapter in my storm of swords book has the Band of Outlaws without a banner/Dondarions group as having Catelyn Stark alive)

I just think someone, perhaps the pyromancers, will be brought in to fix up Gregor- I don't even wanna know what they can do now. X.x... with magic returning and all.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: chamberk on 14 Sep 2005, 21:01
One thing I thought should be mentioned: A Feast for Crows is going to be concerned with characters on the southern part of the continent - Jaime, Cersei, Sansa, probably... and then the next book, Dance of Dragons, will concern itself with the northern regions and people overseas.  AFFC was getting too long, so Martin decided to cut those two halves of the story into two separate books.  It's sad, because I wanted to read more about Jon and Dany and Arya, but right now I'm glad to get ANYthing from that series.  ANd hell, a good deal of the northern stuff will be already written, so the wait for ADOD shouldn't be as bad.  November can't come soon enough. :D

Nyeh, I know....-Looks at her time machine- It just won't work! -Twitch.- keeps taking me to "Dystopian Future Central" ...Or Dune. -Shudder- Anyway, back on topic...Pyromancers? Healing? I could just imagine one putting wildfire in Gregors wounds.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 16 Sep 2005, 09:17
Pyromancers... Well, Im not sure healing would be what they ended up doing, but with all these powers coming back to them now, I wouldnt put it past them to be able to stich him back together somehow.

Or, ya'know, more likley re-animate the Mountain That Walks as an all-loyal and nothing-knowing corpse. That'd be fun. No Pain. Just an axe down the enemies spine.

But so far, only priests of the Red God can do that... I dunno if the Lanisters have any of them just sitting around.

Post by: RedLeather on 16 Sep 2005, 16:39
Ah, but magic is returning, so if a god of a supposed all-powerful god can do it, why not alchemists who can kill people by the tens and thousands (Depending, of course, on how much 'piss' the alchemist has)
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 16 Sep 2005, 22:07
Hmmm, I imagine so.

I want Danny to end up with an elite crew of warriors, Married to John Snow.

HEY! I can dream.

It would be cool.

And Strong Belwas kicks ass.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series

Of course he does, He's one thousand fet tall of Awesome! (....heh, Yay for other comic references!) To bd he's a eunich though, poor bastud.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 16 Sep 2005, 22:20
My buddies, who got me to read the series, are allways deciding "who is who"... and we have one friend, who only reminds us of two people.  Varys, and Belwas (Only when he is mad)...

Lets just say, Matt doesn't like only getting to be eunichs.  Never really makes him smile.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 17 Sep 2005, 12:38
I wouldn't smile either! Hehe...I wonder, was varys a snake in a past life? Seems like it.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 17 Sep 2005, 12:49
Varys is an ass...

Though it does seem that deep down, he is trying to get Danny in power- so I guess I can go for that.

But seriously... Song of Ice and Fire definatly has allot of characters to dislike... hell, look at Arya's list!
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 17 Sep 2005, 14:12
Of course, I wonder...I don't have my books with me (I lent them out to a person i hope to convert to GRRM) Did the Hound die? or did Arya just leave him? and will her "List" get longer? xP
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 17 Sep 2005, 15:37
The Hound's fate is untold- I imagine purposfully.  I imagine he has quite a role to still play- he's a kickass guy... in a semi-evil kinda way.

Arya's list is mostly taken care of... Tickler, Poliver, The Mountain, (The Hound I imagine she no longer wants dead), Joffery, Amoury Lorch, etc.

I allmost want the Mountain to be alive, so the Hound can kill him.

And I want to see Jamie Lanister decide that a certain "maid of Tarth" is a better companion.

Could happen.

I've fought people with my left hand..(Mind you, this is Modern times and fencing gear, but still!) It's fun, i suppose, because people are like ..thrown off,

Back on topic: Hehehe...Yes, yes he does need to shut up...I wonder, what would Maester Aemon say if he met Dany?
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 17 Sep 2005, 17:05
Hmmm.. wow.  That's an interesting question, and I must say I have No clue what the maester would say.  Hmm.

Eh, Jamie could strap his shield to his nubbie.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 17 Sep 2005, 18:20
It'd have to be ....a very large shield, albeit, maybe a shield with a serrated edge?
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 17 Sep 2005, 19:03
Hmmm... I dunno what he should do.

You would figure someone who is supposedly one of the best fighters in existance would be able to figure out a good way to fight.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: RedLeather on 17 Sep 2005, 19:25
You also wouldn't think a former Knight of the Kingsguard would dress up as an old (Really, really old) squire.  Hmm...If only GRRM's universe was real, i'd like to visit The Wall one day...since apprently it's freakishly...Wait...
I just thought of something

Will the dwarf likley meet Arya in The Free Cities of Bravoosi?
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice Series
Post by: Eldirial on 17 Sep 2005, 19:32
Well, assuming Arya doesn't somehow go to the wall instead, yes, I imagine... and if he convinces her he isn't evil, mayhaps they will become traveling companions.

I've read the first three, but I doubt I'll pick up the next in the series.  They're well-writen, but there's just something about them that doesn't quite do it for me.  It might be how he, to me at least, is almost painful in the way he's trying to turn standard fantasy archetypes on their head.  "Oh ho, watch as I make the cripple kid the heir, or the stumpy dwarf king!"  I don't know if that's the direction the books are going to take or not, but it didn't sit well with me.  That and they're just too damn bloodthirsty.  All totally personal preference stuff and the series deserves all the kudos it gets, just not my cup o tea.

I can see that as an easy way to see the books- They are definatly not for everyone, and there are times when Martin does try a little to hard to be different.  My friends are obsessive over the series, so I am sure I will keep reading it- but I agree.... that's the reason I have stopped reading Wheel of Time as of late- it just didn't make me want to keep reading.

A series of battles with the same set of goodies with lots of cleaving the foul *insert race here* from groin to navel, and a few slicing through his neck like through butter leaving bloodfilled stump.

The plot is important but fantasy without HUGE epic battles requires an extremely intricate plot and the characters MUST speak to me otherwise I get bored. I like fantasy that can balance a plot with battles and 3D characters. :)

i am about halfway through the new book, and i can say that it feels a little different.  it is focusing on the time just after the war, so of course it's going to feel different to the previous ones where action was always present or threatened.  it is a bit different tone, but still definitely Martin.  (nb: this might be because i am only about halfway through.  i am pretty sure that there will be some action in the second half of the book)

one character from the past books (one of my faves, actually) is seemingly killed off-screen if a rather nonchalant fashion.  i am not yet sure if it is true or if it's just a ruse, but either way it's definitely goddamn awesome.

I get the book today, after school and all, i can't wait for the awesomness..i've had to fill the void with sub-par books...(I would never have thought i'd have to say that to *any* book..but dayumn...) But i shall be happy and hyper...Yup.

mm, it definitely feels a bit different, but I thought that was mostly because all the POVs are generally in the same area, so we don't get an actual look at what's going on in various places. We just hear rumours, which is a pretty key thing to consider. and that is all I'm gonna say for now so I don't spoil anything!

heh, I've been waiting so long for it be released in the US. I'm in Massachusetts but got the UK version of the book, so I actually finished it a little while ago. it's a challenge not talking to anyone about it before they've actually read the book.

I'm about halfway through also, and if it's who I think you mean, I somewhat doubt that they actually killed them like that.  Perhaps, but I don't think that's really Martin's kinda thing to do- there is probably an evil plot behind it all.

Though, I must say even if the action is lessened, it's still a very good book so far, and I am rather enjoying it.  Now I just hope the next book hitting in end of 06/ begining of 07 like I have heard is true- I don't feel like waiting all that long.

Man, I totally love this series.  It ranks among the top of the lists for me.

I really like the way GRRM writes here, seems almost real.  That and he's really good at making you love or hate characters (damn Cersie Lannister should die is the deepest pits of hell... the wench.)

But yeah, I've read the first three and I just got the fourth, but unfortunately classes get in the way with reading, so I might not get to reading it in a bit.

But as for what I predict/think.  Jon Snow is not Eddard's son.  But he is a Stark!  I predict him to be the son of Lynna (Ned's sister) who was raped by Rheagar Targaryen.  All through the first book, Ned is haunted by his memories of Lynna saying "Promise Me".  I think the promise was to take care of Jon as well as have her buried in the Winterfell crypts (to cross reference you don't need to go far into the first book... like 45 pages).

As for what's going on in the south (and what I'll undoubtably find out in the fourth book) I bet Littlefinger has the throne on strings, but he's too clever to take it for himself.  He'd just manipulate the man on there.  That clever bastard.

What really interests me, though, is who will ride the dragons.  Obviously the black is Dany's.  I think Jon Snow/Targaryen/Stark will ride the green.  And perhaps Tyrion the last.  Never never never underestimate that man, he is cunning to the bone.

And poor Arya... I think that girl will eventually meet up with Nymeria... and they'll cause some big killing crazyness to go down.  With both of them mostly mad and all.

Oh my... that was quite a rant, forgive me for being long winded... I'm trying to catch up on all I missed.

I just have one last thing to say "Long Live Sandor Clegane!"

Oh my, has been a while, So a Dance with dragons is our new goal eh? Can't wait.  Perhaps it will be on time? I really don't care, i just have to See this damed series to the end, it's like games, All RPG's right now (And some other games) are just looking sickly when compared to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Same thing with other books.

Long live The Hound!

My little brother read this series a couple of years ago (or, at least the first 3)
when he was about 9, and reccomended them to me. I realize now that this may have contributed to his being an extremely world-wise, cynical little bastard. I read the first one last year and just started the second one this week. I forgot how good they were. I really appreciate how simply he names his characters. (looking at you, robert jordan)

and yeah, theon greyjoy is an asshole.

Some needs to sit robert jordan down and calmly but firmly explain that he should stop naming characters nrzaky'phth or grtph'rwk'awb. That guy has a terminal consonant fetish. I got 6 books in and decided he was insane and there was no way I could keep everything straight.

Also, a song of ice and fire is a lot more gritty and realistic, in seems to me. then again, it's been awhile since I read any wheel of time.

So, Who here wants to speculate what's going to happen in a Dance With Dragons? Or should we even speculate, and just keep quiet and wait for the book?

I am going seriously frikkin' insane... I don't have the money to buy A Feast For Crows, all the copies at the library are checked out, and none of my friends own the book! GAH.

I love the series so much... I like how Martin doesn't cram magic into his story for MacGuffins and plot work-arounds, but has it be a mysterious thing that few people even believe in. Makes it feel so much more realistic and different than the glut of cookie-cutter fantasy series out there. ::cough::forgottenrealms::cough::

I can't be bothered at the moment to read the whole 100+ post thread about this, but I do have a question, and I'd like some feedback. I apologize in advance if it's already been asked in the thread.

Was anyone else disappointed in A Feast for Crows? I was terribly disappointed. Too much goddamned exposition. I'm really hoping that A Dance with Dragons attempts to bring closure... I finished the book and immediately said "That's it?!"

Yes, yes, yes, I know that George R. R. Martin wanted AFfC and ADwD to be one book, they mirror each other, etc. etc., blah blah blah... Nonetheless, I was still disappointed.

I was slightly disappointed as well. I mean, it was still a great book, but it wasn't 'can't put it down' great. It took me much longer than I'd anticipated to read it.

I much look forward to ADwD

Yeah, as much as I enjoyed AFfC, I gotta say I wasn't to excited by "Oh yeah, that person who was a major character with his own chapters and everything?  Yeah, he's dead" just getting slipped in 3/4ers of the way through the book.

Yeah.  Fuck RR up his stupid ass.  The last book was only half of a book, and the shite half that I could have done without.  All the important characters were totally ignored.  Balls to that.

You want a series, you go read Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series.  That's more like it.

Yeah -at least when Erikson writes only half a book, he starts the series with it.

Fantastic series. I had just finished reading Storm of Swords, I have A Feast for Crows but I think I'll take a break from this series for a bit. Arya, as insane as she is, is still one of my favourite characters. I'm really glad how Jon's arc in the Storm of Swords ended, it ties at least one arc up while everything else is just a ridiculous ambigious cliff-hanger.

And Littlefinger is such a sleazy bastard.

my science fiction teacher down here at columbia college is really close friends with him.  her review from the chicago tribune (i think) is quoted on "A Game of Thrones."  And I think A Storm Of Swords is the one that he dedicated to her (should say to Phyllis Eisenstein).

I loved Game of Thrones.  That is a random book I picked up.  Literally walked into a bookstore, right into the science fiction section, grabbed the first book I could find on the shelf and read half of it on a 6 hour busride.  It was amazing.

Homg. I finished A Feast for Crows. I am going to be major spoilering, so no reading my entry unless you want to be spoiled.

Qyburn was stripped of his maester's chain for a reason, and that reason just became significant.
--> Does he revive the Mountain's corpse and do some major hey-let's-make-a-huge-undead-champion-that's-supposedly-undefeatable? Would Cersei eventually permit him to use it for her when Jaime doesn't come? I SURE HOPE CERSEI DIES.

Sandor Clegane appears in AFfC... but you may not recognise him.
--> Does the lord of light have his way with him too?

The connection between the Stark children and their direwolves is more subtle than you think.
--> How much more subtle can it get? It would be so awesome when Bran learns how to control the other direwolves, not just Summer.

The standing theory is that Jon Snow's parents were Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.  Not exactly subtle, really, which is why I think it's not the truth.
--> Yeah if Jon's father was Rhaegar, you'd think he'd have more Targaryen features, you know, the violet eyes and silvery hair. He's just all Stark. Not sure if this standing theory makes a lot of sense either, but I don't believe that Eddard is Jon's father either.

Arya is one of the only characters whose plotline is split between AFfC and ADwD.  Most of the rest, you won't see much of until book six.
--> Sweet, so we get twice of Arya? She is my favourite character, and I'd like to see whether that blindness is permanent or not. Man, she sure kills people quickly.

I suspect Dany's three dragonriders will mirror the original three.
--> I think Dany's force would only land in Westeros by the end of Dance with Dragons.

Also, I DON'T think Brienne dies.
