Title: Bad Translations
Post by: Jenno on 23 Oct 2005, 07:45
Okay, so on the weekend I saw the dubbed version of Spirited Away. Having already seen the Japanese version, I was pretty shocked by how much the story had lost had lost in being tranlated and 'kiddyfied'.

Has anyone else noticed this kind of thing happening to such a large extent in other films/cartoons/whatever?

that reminds me, i need to track down a subtitled copy of Spirited Away.  i caught about half of the dubbed version on the last day of drawing class last year and was just blown away by the animation and art direction.

Back before anime only came out on VHS a large majority of the dubs were TERRIBLE!

hmmm... yeah, the advent of DVDs anda  growing European and American market would appear to have improved the translation quality over time...

Also, I think it's become the case that doing the English dubs of japanese work is now considered a respectable job with a reasonable supply of money going into it, whereas during the 80's it was easily the bottom of the barrel job.
