Well, J... when a Man and a Woman love each other... VERY much... the man puts his 'winky' into the woman's 'vagoo'.  However, after a few years, men and women in love watch a screen, instead.  A screen with flickering images, most of which are aimed at selling you things.

update: ok let's say: die sendung mit der maus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Sendung_mit_der_Maus) is the best german tv-show of the 90s. (probably also of the 70s and 80s, but i'm too young to have watched it back then.)
it was, in fact, aired first in 1971.

I still wouldn't consider it 90s because it ran more in the 2000s than 90s.

I liked the family shows like Full House etc that I grew up watching.  Alot of 90s cartoons too.

Well, the problem here is: We live in Germany and that stuff never aired here, so there. And if it aired, I have no idea what it was called.

Plus I maintain that Sending mit der Maus is still better.

Also, if Futurama counts, I'm so including it. I don't own all Futurama DVD sets for nothing here.

Edit: Here's why it's better:

Definitely My So Called Life.

Ren and Stimpy, The Tick, Cow and Chicken (always prefered it to Angry Beavers which was similar) for the animated stuff.

Seinfeld (a given), Twin Peaks, Spaced (started '99 and ran into the 2000s) and surely some others I don't remember yet.

Square One.
I actually think this one's late-80s early-90s.
Please tell me I'm not the only one here who remembers Square One.  Sometimes I think my best friend and I are the only people who have heard of the show.  My favorite segments were always Dirk Niblick and the Math Brigade and Mathnet (Dragnet spoof).
As a kid I was only allowed to watch a half-hour of TV each day and both of my parents are mathematicians so it was pretty much predetermined that that half-hour would be Square One (which was OK with me since I loved the show).

I have never seen My So Called Life, but it is always mentioned in conversations about '90s television. I know it starred Claire Danes, but that's about all I know about it. What was it about? Did you have to be there (in the '90s, I mean) to enjoy it or is it still good?

Also, Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The X-Files were all super cool.

Title: Favourite '90s TV shows?
Post by: Inlander on 21 Nov 2005, 04:24
Heh, I remember the lamest attempt ever at inserting depth into a T.V. show occurred in one of the very few episodes of Sliders that I watched.  Two characters were trying to have a moral dilemma about whether or not to provide the expertise to create nuclear weapons to an alternative-universe Earth that didn't have them (because there was an asteroid on a collision course with the Earth and they needed a nuclear missile to blow it up).  The entire conversation lasted three lines, along the lines of:

- Old, bearded Slider guy: "Can we really risk unleashing nuclear weapons upon an unsuspecting world?"
- Nondescript alternative-universe-Earth guy: "If we don't, there won't be a world."
- O.B.S.G.: "You're right."

That's the kind of half-arsed writing that makes me want to give the T.V. a patronisingly slow hand-clap.

Oh my god, I do know that show.  At first I was thinking "nope, never heard of it," but then you referred to math and it all came flooding back.  Back in Korea there was only one channel of American television, the Air Force network, and Square One was shown on it.

Damn, now that I'm thinking of it there were a lot of science nerd shows I liked to watch.  Of course Contact is the grand-daddy of the bunch, but my fave was Newton's Apple.  Later on, Beakman's World was funny for a few episodes, but got irritating fast.

I loved Newton's Apple!  It was always on immediately after Square One and once in awhile I could convince my mom to let me watch another half hour of TV.  My favorite was the episode where they took appart an escalator to show how it worked.
I only vaguely remember Contact and don't think I ever saw Beakman's World.  When my younger sister was little she always watched Bill Nye the Science Guy which was pretty meh compared to Newton's Apple.

Yeah, Hey Arnold was one of my favorite cartoons, too. I loved how melancholy some episodes were. The one where they saved the sea turtle from the crappy zoo was just like... wow. I liked old Nick a lot. Pete and Pete, Are You Afraid of the Dark? (which scared me!), Ghostwriter like someone said, and some other things. I also watched Wishbone when I was a lot younger and a lot of other silly shows. I barely watch television anymore, but when an old show comes on, I get really nostalgic.

I'm a big fan of old Nickelodeon.  Pete and Pete was nothing short of brilliant, and I enjoyed all the other shows well enough.  I loved Angry Beavers... I can't believe I decided to stop watching cartoons halfway through its too-short life.

There was a cartoon that was on Nick, I think in the early nineties, that was about this secret agent mouse (I think) who I believe worked in this freakishly big building... I want to say many or most of the voices were British.  I can't remember the name of it, though, but it was great.

The best part about The Angry Beavers were the credits. No really, they had the best nicknames ever.

The shoow was pretty awesome too, but the credits were just hilarious.

PETE AND PETE, DAMMIT!

I own the DVDs. The show is STILL freaking brilliant. It hasn't aged at all.

Also, Brimstone. It ran for half a season on Fox and is to this day one of my favorite shows of all time. It was amazing and Fox is a bunch of asshole motherfucking cocksuckers for cancelling it and Firefly.

I just love Ren+Stimpy, MST3k, Pete&Pete (yay I own seas.1), My So-Called Life, and uuuuh I find it awesome and hilarious how people love The Angry Beavers sooo much on here; I miss that show.

But c'mon, PETE & PETE for the win, guys.....

Love for all the old Nick shows! Pete and Pete, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Angry Beavers, Aaahh Real Monsters, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Clarissa Explains it All, The Secret World of Alex Mack, Salute Your Shorts, Hey Dude, Doug, the older episodes of Rugrats, Hey Arnold, the original cast of All That, David the Gnome, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Guts, Wild and Crazy Kids, Double Dare....
....Can you tell what network I spent most of my childhood on?
Aside from that which involves green slime, I also remember loving Animaniacs, Dinosaurs, Full House (but I can't stand it anymore) and probably a lot of other shows that I can't remember right now.

Just make sure you skip all the episodes that deal with aliens and government conspiracies.  The best X-Files episodes are the funny ones, where David Duchovny plays Mulder as an enormous nerd and Gillian Anderson plays Scully all sarcastic and droll and "I can't believe he's such a nerd."  And then in the middle of it all they have some crazy monster.

or find yourself a completely dorky and nerdy (also, at least 30 years old) friend from minneapolis who happened to tape the cable access shows, and then bribe them with lots of alcohol and unopened star trek figurines.
during my first time around in college, i met one of these dorks.  her name was laurel, and she had taken a tour of the studio once, and got one of the waffle props from episode #317.
i'm pretty sure she still lives in someone's basement and has to put SPF 5 gagillion on before hitting any sort of natural light at all.

the original Power Rangers.. except when I was little me and my cousin were fooling around pretending we were power rangers and he accidentally broke my arm.. didn't really watch the show much after that.. lol.

Pokemon WAS an amazing show, especially if you happened to be a kid at the time. Of course, I can only speak of the show pre-Silver and Gold era. I lost track after that. Basically, if you didn't buy the game right away, you'd miss out on all the new pokemon, and you get over whelmed, and so you end up waiting till you get it, but they don't show reruns, and you're all like, "FUCK", but you're still like, 8, so you're all like, "MAAAAN".

The ones already mentioned:
-Duckman
-The Tick (I hear the live-action show didn't suck nearly as hard as I thought it did, but I've never seen it)
-Power Rangers
-Brimstone (I'm totally with you on the shittiness of that cancellation)
-MST3K
-Pokemon
-Bill Nye the Science Guy
-Square One
-Young Indiana Jones
-Start Trek the Next Generation (my vote as the greatest Start Trek show ever, I remember the last episode, and talking about it on the bus the day after)
-Dinosaurs

Unmentioned (as far as I can tell):
-The Critic (come on guys, what's wrong with you?)
-Highlander (theme song by Queen, and Adrian Paul being a badass...Scottsman?)
-Due South (just the first couple of seasons, it got really stupid when they replaced the detective)
-Stargate SG-1 (yeah, it still runs, but it started during the 90's)
-The Simpsons (obvious, but it bears mentioning because the 90's was back when it was good)

Probably tons more, but it's late and I'm tired.

I watched a few episodes of the live-action Tick, and it was decent overall, with some episodes pretty blah, and others pretty funny.  Nowhere near as timeless as the cartoon, but it should've gotten another season, it might've been able to be a little less erratic.  I don't remember a lot of details anymore though, which says something about the show too, since the cartoon was much older and yet sticks out in my mind much clearer.
