Post by: Praeserpium Machinarum on 03 Jan 2006, 12:58: is the silliest genre name ever! I don't know about you, but in my book all music is "world music" ;)

Anyway do any of you listen to it? If so can you recommend something? Some Gamelan for example?

I mentioned Gamelan because I am listening to a live recording of a Gamelan, balinesian Gamelan to be precise, concert with the ensemble Dwi Mekar(no idea how to pronounce that) on Roskilde Festival. And it sounds wicked! Totally strange and whatnot but really wicked especially when they play at INSANE speeds.
I would have liked to be there since they had dancers and gigantic gongs!

I like me some gong :)

Ever since me and some pals brought some african instruments to a jam session and experimented with fusing it with some other genres. Can't seem to find what I'm looking for anywhere...

Post by: KharBevNor on 03 Jan 2006, 22:55: My three favourite artists that fall under world are Dead Can Dance (who are almost the world equivalent of neo-folk, but very awesome), The Afro-Celt Sound System (who are more world-dance) and Ladysmith Black Mombazo (their traditional African stuff rather than their gospel stuff. Very relaxing, and also highly impressive).

World is generally just folk music from non-european countries however. Just as Country and Bluegrass are basically folk music from America. It generally comes in three types as well, I find. That is, proper traditional music (ie LBM), fusiony stuff, (Afro-Celts, Dead Can Dance) or incense-wavey smoke-a-jointy whale-songy New Age tosh*.

*At least I've not found any merit in this type.
