Title: The Screenshot Thread
Post by: nihilist on 07 Feb 2006, 10:11
Screenshots, whee!  In-game, desktop, you name it.  Remember to keep the size down (600x600), and just link to a bigger one.

My stab at it - from my laptop:

Very cluttered.  Some stuff from work (including my regionalized genre defintions for France... FRANCE), some other random junk, Daft Punk.

Here's mine. (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y21/sandmanccl/foggylot.jpg)

Well, the image at least.  I don't have a single desktop icon except for the recycle bin, though, so the image itself is good enough.

I took the picture myself (elsewhere in my photobucket account, I have a smaller version of the original photo) one day when it was really foggy and caught the sun just right to give a burst of light behind this tree.  I'm not really used to fog, so I had to get a picture or two.

i don't know if my USE flags are obscene, but I do have a USE flag for offensive :)

I'm thinking of migrating to LFS after my recital is done. Portage/emerge... nice and all, but I still want to move to more of a ./configure&&make&&make install sort of environment.

On the other hand, I feel a touch guilty for having to use my old debian xorg.conf...

LFS isn't really LFS.  It's RPM-based.  Ewwy.  Hate hate hate.

Umm... please explain. According to this (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/stable/introduction/important.html#intro-important-pkgmgt), the BLFS book gives some advice on how to install a package management system, but to quote directly, "Dealing with package management takes the focus away from the goals of these books—teaching how a Linux system is built."

I started compiling LFS, but didn't know how to do certain things and got frustrated when the toolchain (namely, GCC) wouldn't install properly. I think I know what the problem was (I should have created a new make.conf, I think), but I do remember there being nothing RPM-ish about it. It really was a matter or ./configure && make && make install.

Some LFS-based distros -- for example, dyne:bolic or Yoper -- can use .rpm files and have package management utilities, but that's not really an aspect of LFS, but of the individual distros.

Post by: josiah on 24 Feb 2006, 00:34
LFS aside, when I feel like having more a GUI-fied experience, I tend towards Windowmaker:

Title: The Screenshot Thread
Post by: nihilist on 24 Feb 2006, 07:17
The LFS stuff that I've done have always come in RPM format.  Hence the ick.  Perhaps things have changed since then.

That looks like Homeworld 2.

Except that it's from EVE online. I should know, I took that screenshot myself.

EVE Online is a space game. not ever game set in space is Homeworld 2.

Which, incidentally, I also play. poorly. can't get past the third mission.

EDIT: I know tha tthus far we've been using desktop screenies, but I felt it's time for a change.

So here's my Oblivion character, Rutger Holst.

Excuse the graphics quality, my PC's a little below the line for Oblivion.

I can partially answer that. He's using Windows XP, but either Litestep or Blackbox as a shell.

That would be lightstep from the looks of it. Blackbox is much cleaner. you can hack in graphics in to your toolbars and what nots. but I tend to keep it clean. [I am a bb user, BB4win == best ui ever]

I'm bored and shamlessly shooting for 300 posts today, so here are some screenshots I found while digging through my WoW folder.

First off, here's my old 60 Undead Priest rocking out with Nefarion in Blackwing Lair. (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b21/dachandecol/QC%20Forum%20pics/GildenlowNefarion.jpg)

The Draenei my girlfriend and I made in WoW: The Burning Crusade (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b21/dachandecol/QC%20Forum%20pics/DmitriusUliana.jpg)

The Blood Elves we made in WoW: TBC (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b21/dachandecol/QC%20Forum%20pics/MiolaDachande.jpg)

And finally, here's a good example of why we play WoW.  Just such cool stuff to see in a video game environment.  Obviously, this one's my current desktop:

Isn't that just the result of cmd + tab? Looks like it to me, and that's a pretty basic, but really really useful function.

I have no idea how I'd take a screenshot while cmd+tabbing, though. Cmd + shift + 3 didn't to the trick.

It's an XP theme called Luna Element 5. I'd link you, but the author made his latest version without the black substyle (which Princy has). So I'll leave it to you to find the theme with the black.

I guess a dock would be anything similar to the OS X dock. A blank board where you can drag icons onto and they stay there. Doesn't have to be an external program, but in my mind it looks like a dock.

They're mergeing back apparently. I never bothered with Beryl, I don't think it's in the standard Fedora repo's anyway.

Compiz comes pre-installed at the moment, though I think F 7 will use Beryl or compiz-quinn or whatever it's called these days.

I'm thinking of heading back to KDE once version 4 is out so it'll be interesting to see how KDE handles it all. Last time I tried about 9 months ago I ended up breaking KWM :( this was before AIGLX etc though and you had t ocompile a bunch of stuff from the nightly CVS builds, imagine its calmed (and stabilized) a lot since then.

Nice. Yeah, with the uber-wide screen (screens?) there, you don't really have a lot of options. What distro is that, anyway? (gnome foot = <3!)

The only thing that I can think might be an option is to take some nice clean vector art and stitch it together. I dunno. I was specifically thinking these:

http://www.dlanham.com/art/spring/
http://www.dlanham.com/art/fall/

Pretty pictures of trees in various seasons would be super clean and super easy to stitch into a nice loooooong image.  Plus, I dig that artist's work.

I'm breaking The Screenshot Thread, so apologies! I just wanted to share that.

It's more work to maintain than other distros, but I have more control over exactly how it's set up.  I wouldn't reccomend it for someone who hasn't used linux for a decent chunk of time already (not saying you haven't).

I used it for a while (about 4 months) what killed it for me was emerge, I know people go on about how good it is etc, but it became such a pain, I probably didn't have everything set up properly but I had so much trouble getting stuff installed I'd have to muck around masking and unmasking packages all the time, just became such a pain to do what should have been basic installations.

The good thing though was for a long time it was the only distro that recognized my Sata raid controller, I still think the Gentoo forums are porbably the best of any linux distro I've used and it did teach me a heap.

I haven't used KDE for a while I was curious wether it was one of the version 4 development (alpha?) releases or wether its  3.5.x

I'm probably going to install XFCE once Fedora 7 comes out, a lot of people on the Fedora forums are raving about it and I'm getting pretty bored with gnome :)

Normally I don't use gaytunes cause all my sexythemes are on winamp, but lately firefox has been having problems with not having major butthurt when I run it and winamp at the same time so shit sucks.

I recently updated to 7.04 and changed my wallpaper but I can't show you the new one because Photobucket is no longer accepting files sent from peoples hard drives.

Lazer,

What OS is that? Vista with a really weird skin?

P.S. scale your images so they fit on the page plz.

Sorry, yeah I should've linked to that. My bad. D:

Anywho, nah it's just XP with sum haxxed uxtheme.dll and a new .theme and .msstyle. I've got all the stuff, like the replacer program and what not hosted if you want it. I'm pretty sure it's not considered warez but I'm not positive if I can link to it here or not so I'll just go ahead and do it untill a mod gets to it and slaps me on the wrist. (My argument in this case being that it can be found on non warez sites.)

http://lazer.neonninja.net/hax/ (http://lazer.neonninja.net/hax/) Basically you just download the uxtheme.dll and the Replacer program, and do what the replacer thing tells you to do. The original uxtheme.dll is in the system32 folder I believe. There's also a few .themes in that folder for you to start out with, but other good places to look for skins and such is DevArt and Customize.Org and such.

Oh also sup screenshot: http://lazer.neonninja.net/Images/desktopic/desktopomg16.png (http://lazer.neonninja.net/Images/desktopic/desktopomg16.png)

Also, everyone else - what the heck is up with having (literally) 50 icons on your desktop? How can you stand such clutter? At work I have 11, and I can't get rid of any of them 'cause they're locked. At home I have none. NONE! (I'm on ubuntu at home, XP at work.)

My current desktop, I usually turn the weather thing off when not using it, and run conky instead of crystal-monitor, but pretty it is. Yes, that is a P3 667, yes, it is shiny, yes it has 384mb RAM, yes, it DOES encode a DVD to H264 in just over 4 hours, OpenMOSIX FTW. If you take the image source and change it to snapshot2, you can see how my desktop buttons normally look, for some reason they grey'ed out when I took this. This computer does not run compiz or any of its variants, and features an 8MB onboard GFX chip.

I'm sorry, but LOL, man imagemagick is awesome, as is imagemagick --help or going to teh website and reading up, it's not hard. And it's a hell of a lot faster than having a GUI. I think the problem is ubuntu, or whichever distro you use. Most distro's in this thread are too GUI intensive, teaching you nothing about the workings of your computer and how things fit together. As it is,t here is too much ubuntu abuse going on, and PLEASE make xfce look nice, it can do so much better.

All the aliases in the "dock" are legitimate, but the one for 'iTunes' just goes to a folder with a custom icon.

thatryanguy wins. Hands down.

I'd post piccies of my desktop from home, but it's still a work in progress (gotta muck around in PS and get mah Iron Man on!)... And it'll all change again once i get my third monitor (which is after i get my second video card, which is after i get a new mobo, and so on ad infintum)...

Then the setup will be 19" 4:3/22" 16:9/19" 4:3. Plenty of room for EVERYTHING.(No wonder my system runs so slow... but with two GPU's, it should be enough to push Vista 'to da max!')

[EDIT] I can't believe i used that phrase. i wholeheartedly apologise.

I just have the fade out, or whatever it's called, where the window gets smaller and more transparent till it disappears. It's a tad classier than explosions (it's okay, I have the warp in setting for when I open windows which makes a big flash when I open stuff enabled, and fire drawing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnWd1qO-AZE)).

and the Desktop computer (pardon the little mess at the base of it, I'm recovering files from a soon to die laptop hard drive)

In which I point out some things I really like about 7 (http://i42.tinypic.com/142f09h.png) (tinypic doesn't do thumbnails?)

A: The handy taskbar, note the media player shortcuts in the preview window. Neat!
B: The amazingly easy to set up XP virtual machine. Maple doesn't save or load in 7, but in XP it's fine. Thanks to this I can get work done. You can launch programs that run in the vm (the xp mode anyway) from this 'Virtual Windows XP Applications' folder in the start menu. No silly desktop needed!
C: Pretty glass effects!

I also have a million icons on my desktop, I keep intending to clean it up but never do.

Got my 23-year-old Mac SE online. (4 MB RAM, 8 mhz CPU, 800k floppy, 20 MB HD, 1 gig external HD)
Yes it's a photo, but I don't feel like converting its PICT screenshots to JPEGs. It took enough tinkering to get this far.
(http://i41.tinypic.com/10fyrzo_th.jpg) (http://i41.tinypic.com/10fyrzo.jpg)

It's connected through LocalTalk to a Cayman GatorBox (basically a router that links LocalTalk and Ethernet), which then just goes to the DSL router like any other PC. It works, but the shared bandwidth for the entire LocalTalk chain maxes out at 28.8k/sec so... you ... have... to... be... patient.

I remember the day I replaced that with a Mac Color Classic, which I kept around until.... 98?   I had AOL 1.0 running on that sucker.    Man, those were the days.  My email address had a ! instead of an @.

I  also don't have a single desktop icon except for the recycle bin, though, so the image itself is good enough.Doing the whole screenshot thing made me realise just how long I've had that image as my background. So I changed it; here's  something a little more busy. I want to know How do  get the quick launch bar up the top?

Bought a "broken" iMac G3 400 from Savers for $20 a few weeks ago, fixed it (only needed a hard drive) threw 512 MB of RAM in, and now it's dual booting 9.2.2 and Tiger. Makes a great DVD player/silent web browser/heating device, and I can finally use all those odl magazine discs I accumulated over the years!

Here's OS 9 because it gets more usage.

EDIT: Yes I know I only post screenshots of old Macs, but you don't wnat to see my boring-ass main desktop and its thousands of icons on the desktop do you? Just imagine the exact polar opposite of these empty Linux screenshots where all you see is the wallpaper and a FluxBox taskbar and you're close.

I guess this thread is as good a place as any to post about this, and I really want to share:

I've probably mentioned F.lux (http://stereopsis.com/flux/) before; the program that shifts your monitor's color balance to a sepia tone when the sun goes down, making it easier on the eyes. But it doesn't do anything for the actual brightness, so the backlight can still be really uncomfortable. The only way I have of reducing brightness is the buttons on the monitor itself, which are a real pain to use. But now I've found Dimmer (http://www.mylittlehost.com/dimmer.aspx), a small and simple program that gives you an opacity slider, making your monitor less bright. It only does that one thing, and is slightly more troublesome to configure than it should be, but still a hell of a lot better than pressing a bunch invisible buttons on the side of my monitor 50 times.

No, it doesn't. See the FAQ.

Quote
Plenty of things already change the brightness of my screen. Why is this different?
f.lux changes the color temperature of your display. Natural light is more blue, while most artificial light (including candlelight) is warmer. Incandescent bulbs, which we're all used to, become more red in tone when you dim them. But newer LEDs and CFLs don't - this includes the backlight on your monitor. If you're a photographer, you've probably dealt with this, since pictures taken inside at night are always much more brown than photos outside.

Long as I'm posting in this thread, here. This is one of my favorite wallpapers.

Hmm, Dimmer apparently also affects the brightness of your screenshots. Here's one with Dimmer disabled.

The background is a false color picture of the Carina nebula from the Hubble telescope. Taken from here (http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/nebula/pr2007016a/).

A WM stands for Window Manager. The system which organises the windows on your screen. I'm using a tiling WM, which arranges the windows automatically, in ways I can configure. Here's a hint which should make it much easier:

That makes it xmonad.  Any particular reason for choosing it?
Title: Re: The Screenshot Thread
Post by: ankhtahr on 10 Mar 2013, 04:23
Yup, XMonad. To be honest, the original reason was that it was recommended to me by a friend. I had a look at it, tried dwm and awesome as well, talked about this with some other users, and settled with it. I worked on my xmonad.hs, and am now really, really happy with it. Also I'm fascinated by functional programming languages, and plan to learn Haskell.

Whenever I'm forced to use a stacking window manager, like on Windows, it seems so inefficient to me now.
Title: Re: The Screenshot Thread
Post by: snalin on 10 Mar 2013, 04:52
Written in Haskell? That's pretty cool.

I have a slight bit of experience with Haskell, and if you know any imperative programming language, it's pretty darn easy to get into. It's just functions. Functions calling functions on functions that return functions, yes, but still essentially what you're used to.
Title: Re: The Screenshot Thread
Post by: ankhtahr on 10 Mar 2013, 05:05
Not only is it written in Haskell, you also configure it in Haskell. To apply your new configuration you recompile. That's the only reason why xmonad is not really suitable for too small computers. You need the ghc, which is around 700MB big. If you want to use Haskell anyway it's not a problem, but if you only want xmonad, that's really big for such a small WM.

I have to admit, I don't really have practical experience in programming. I know a little bit of C, some Java, some Pascal, I'm a little more experienced in AVR Assembler (for Atmel Microcontrollers), and had a basic introduction to Erlang. But there's no programming language I'm really good at.

Yip, JPG would have been fine, even with a small quality setting because hay, it's a desktop.

This is mine, the background picture rotates through around 100 images like this, also I have a second screen which is actually a TV which I use for watching movies/TV shows in bed.

The secondary screen is currently reflecting the fact I once inflicted Harry Potter fanfic on the universe - somebody did a picture of  my main character. She was a half-blood Slytherin who was a couple of years older then the main trio (and disliked them intensely). She owed something to Daria (but notably without her rigid morality) and something to George McDonald-Fraser's version of   Harry Flashman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Flashman)  (but without his lechery and only some of his cowardice). Some people said they liked it < shrugs >.

Win 7, got it set to rotate through a collection, but this is the current one (work comp, dual screen, but I cropped it down):

I get most of the images I use for my background from this site:
http://www.caedes.net/ (http://www.caedes.net/)

I've also lowered the resolution of the original image so when I lock my screen, it's visible there, too.  Unless you had them side by side, you really wouldn't notice the quality difference.

I'll continue what K1dmor did and post the website where I got it from. They have some really nice anime wallpapers. They don't have many but all of them are in great quality.
You can also filter them by resolution. :)

Usually you can press CTRL + Print and then paste it into an image processing program of your choice (paint, photoshop, gimp, whatever). As far as I know that works on most Operating Systems. I could be wrong though, don't have that much experience with MacOS.

If you get a print screen program, you can define your own print screen button - I use Gadwin Printscreen. It's practical mostly for dumping the screen shots into a specified folder, and having a bunch of other options. I hadn't thought of it as a good alternative if you don't have a printscreen button, but there it is.

Okay, I finally got around to fixing up my desktop to make the three primary virtual desktops functioning more smoothly.  Desktop two is basically there for the widgets and nothing else, whilst 3 is all terminal windows.  #1 I have decluttered a bit.

Which is something I never understood. A WM is to me a means to get access to the programs I'm running. It shouldn't hinder that purpose by using resources. The form should follow the function, efficiency is elegance. Why use a complex solution to a problem, when there's a so much simpler one.

I also never understood desktop widgets. I don't look at my desktop often. I see the wallpaper through my fake-transparent terminals, but apart from that I don't see it. If I spent much time looking at an empty desktop instead of a program I'd be doing something wrong.
Title: Re: The Screenshot Thread
Post by: hedgie on 27 Jul 2014, 06:05
Oh, I don't think that my WM is ever in the way, although I'd love it if when KDE 5 does ship, there's an option for tiling on the virtual desktop for all the terminal windows.  And, I'd say in many cases, widgets are useless, since one would have to minimise windows of useful stuff to really do anything with them.  However when I have one virtual desktop that is exclusively for things that can be useful to access, and I can do so with a simple key-chord, and quickly switch back to work without taking my hands off the keyboard.  It's faster after all, to find out current temperature and forecast say, to just hit ^F2, look, then hit ^F1 to get back to what I was doing than it would to be to open a new tab, and type in a search query (switching applications, if required).  And even less time than say, check RSS feeds by using alt-tab until I get to the right program, or drag the mouse all the way to the system tray to check RSS feeds for anything interesting, since again, it's two key-chords, one in, one out.

The rest of it, really, is just my own sense of aesthetics.  I don't really care about resource consumption, especially even with all the candy, X, Plasma Desktop, and Kwin are together at <1% of one core, and using no memory to speak of.

Edit:  I think any further discussion along this line should probably be quoted and sent to the *nix thread.

Since my windows boot is basically for Borderlands gaming, I went ahead and looked for a wallpaper and look that would work for me.

Also, I have the opinion that wallpapers are there because you want to see them, therefore I always have somewhat clean desktops.

(All those gauges and meters were customized to fit with the theme. They're originally cyan and white, and with much less information and interesting links. Also, I effectively have 3 clocks since the round thing on the right is a polar clock. Suck it Timemaster)

As you can see, I kind of like the red color, and I am a bit of a fan of the Siren. Just a bit.
