oh yes, since Microsoft Paint isn't exactly an application to be creative.

Indeed, albeit with photo reference.

that is indeed, quality work, with the extreme lack of tools in the poorly made Microsoft Paint, that is a skill.

there should be a site where you can put up work that you has done in Microsoft Paint or MacPaint.

You know what the difference is between Paint and Photoshop?

Photoshop uses memory in your computer. Paint uses memory in your brain. Otherwise, there's not much difference between the two, really. Photoshop is just a time saver.

True... You can do quality work in Photoshop with nothing but the brush tool if you know what you're doing, its plethora of other tools aside. Limited tools don't matter as long as it has the essentials, and you've got the patience. Paint just has a unique quality to it, though. Its canvas just begs to be indiscriminately bombarded with blocky, simplistic scribbles, but if you take the time to use it as if it were fit to create fine art, you can come out with something that much more impressive, if only for the fact that it was done in Microsoft Paint, of all programs. If I had done this in Photoshop, I have to imagine it would have come out... the best word that comes to mind is, "generic."

Corel Painter is also pretty awesome.  I tried the demo version that came with my Wacom tablet a couple of years ago, and I've been using it to ink all of my comics ever since.

Photoshop is a little bit more than the lazy man's paint. Paint doesn't have layers for example, which when making a coloured comic are essential.

well I don't know about that, Photoshop just has more option to make your artwork more realistic as if it has been painted in real life, much like Corel Draw (i think it's called)

Buh??

Christmonkey. It's certainly feasible that such a piece could be done in MS Paint, but the shading must have been an utter nightmare... 500 hours, eh... And I thought I was nuts for spending eight hours with MS Paint.

Yea I'm not sure why someone would do that to themselves but whatever floats your boat I guess.

Well I use photoshop and don't do 'realistic' work. And I can't get anywhere near the same quality in paint

Indeed, I'm pretty sure MSPaint can't anti-alias your linework (in other words, it can't make it look smoothed out).  I would expect that the guy who spent 500 hours probably worked in a really huge size with a lot of detail and scaled the image down to make the linework look finer.

MS Paint may not be able to anti-alias your line work for you, but there's nothing stopping you from anti-aliasing it yourself.

Layers aren't essential - they're just yet another tool that makes the art process much easier & quicker. My main point is that there's nothing you can do in Photoshop that you couldn't achieve in Paint (given the time, naturally), as some given examples have proven.

Now if you were to consider a program such as Illustrator, then you'd be getting into vectors instead of pixels, which does make for a different concept - but any pixel'd screenshot of a vector drawing could be duplicated in Paint eventually.

Incidentally, does anyone know what program the author of Jerkcity uses? I have high suspicions that it must be Paint (or a similar-level program), given that the common non-background art never has smooth edges.

Post by: thistastes on 01 May 2006, 09:18
i still use mspaint, i don't really understand why people would take the time to do anything that is extreamly complex with the program.

most of my drawings are small things that take between 30-45 mintues tops.  about the amount of time it takes me to listen to an album and think about some things at the end of a day...

i use a mouse, i want a tablet.

Other than the fact that even to attempt it would be completely, utterly, ridiculously, tremendously time consuming and retarded?

jerkcity isn't drawn with an art program at all. They generate it with MS Comic Chat.
