Title: 2005 Academy Awards
Post by: Kirbo on 05 Mar 2006, 21:48
I'm impressed, the academy got it mostly right.

Crash was the best film, Phillip Seymour Hoffman was the best actor, Both screenplays deserved their win.

The only thing I disagree with was Reese Witherspoon taking it over Felicity Huffman, but eh, she was good.

Jon Stewart was freaking funny as well.

Jon Steward was not that funny, really.

I am glad that such quality films (generally) won things. I am looking forward to seeing Syriana and Capote soon. Brokeback Mountain was totally deserving of best director, and Crash was a really good film, too.

All in all, a pretty decent set of awards, I guess.

"Bjork was unable to make it to the ceremony, because Dick Cheney shot her."

I thought he was excellent.

Seriously.  Jon Stewart was pretty funny but I'm not surprised this John Steward character sucked, no one's ever heard of him.

Stewart was lampooning Hollywood's self-importance the whole time, a lot of the audience didn't get it.

It was almost dead heat between Crash and Good Night and Good Luck as to which was my favorite, with GNGL being slightly better in my opinion, but I'm still happy Crash won. My only complaint is that Don Cheadle should have been up there to accept the award.

Yes, Stewert will alwyas have a place in my heart for going on "Crossfire" and finally telling those guys what the deal was.  He could do a great number of bad things and I would still watch him.

" martin scoursese-0, 3 6 mafia -1"

I thought John was very funny as usual, the best was definately the daily showesque ad campaigns for best actress, because Kiera Knightly definately does have god dust sprinkled on her face

Kirbo, I think I love you.
Dolly is a goddess!! A crazy country goddess!!

Although you don't seem to have the same Reese Witherspoon - love as me. I adore her. I want to name my first born daughter after her. I am a little creepy....

No, I'm not a huge Witherspoon fan. She didn't deserve Best Actrss, Felicity Huffman did. Also she's this huge deal now, but when I look at her movies I'm not impressed.

Walk the Line was decent, Election was good, her massive amounts of shitty comedies don't work for me, she was in Little Nicky for god sake.

I don't get the fuss behind her.

she's adorable and she makes me smile. possibly because i can see a lot of me in her....hell, after seeing Legally Blonde my parents told me I should go to law school.....bastards.

i think it's the politeness combined with some spunk....

but all are entitled to their opinions.

PS. Dolly Parton is too cool for the academy!

Totally, Three 6 Mafia my ass.

In all fairness, Travlin' Thru is a pretty weak song.

And about Reese, I can see a bit of me in her too. Hurr hurr hurr.

Hell no. But come on, I really liked Transamerica, but the song just didn't work for me. In the Deep is my favorite of the three, but I can understand why It's Hard out here for a Pimp won.

I dunno, I didn't really enjoy the academy awards. The politics of the academy ran rampant that night.

Ang Lee won best director because Brokeback wasn't going to win best picture.

George Clooney won best supporting actor because GNGL wasn't going to win anything else.

Reese Witherspoon won best actress because Walk The Line wasn't going to get anything else.

Memiors of a Geisha won best cinematography over GNGL because it wouldn't win any other awards.

*shrugs*

Maybe I'm too cynical, but it seems like, every year, the academy tries to give one award to each of the movies it liked, regardless of whether or not the individuals in that group, or movie in that category, deserved it.

Ang Lee won best director because he was the best director

Georgre Clooney was the lead in Syriana, so yeah...the best supporting actor thing confuses me, but in terms of what he went through for the movie, and how well he did in the roll, he did deserve it, even if I thought Matt Dillon was better.

Reese Witherspoon won......I got nothing, I agree 100%.

Haven't seen Memiors, so I have no frame of reference, but GN&GL looked damned cool, so I'm going to agree here too.

Seeing Memoirs win all those visual awards and watching all those middle-aged white people come up to accept their awards and talk about the "enchantment" of the story and "the beauty of Arthur's vision" ... it was really awesome!!

ARTHUR GOLDEN HAS THE FET!!!!

thank you, kirbo. election was very good, but i find her quite annoying now. i've tried to like her newer movies because i liked her in election, but she's just not a great actress. i know the point of legally blonde was to overdo it, but they could have overdone it in a better fashion, making it easier to watch.

They also could have not made Legally Blonde, thus making easier to watch. I had the pleasure of seeing it on an airplane.

Now, I'm not trying to say she was bad in WTL, she was good...just not that good. If you've seen Transamerica, you'd know why I think Huffman should have won.

WTL just seemed to Ray for me, only I prefer Ray Charles to Johnny Cash.

(Prepares for a beating)

re: 3 6 Mafia winning -
Why could the academy have wanted to pretend it was "hip" and "cool" back when South Park was nominated? Especially since the song it was nominated for was way better than the generic as shit song that won

Hahaha, good call. You'll be in my heart sucked.

Blame Canada is far from the best song from SP:BL&U, but of the 5 songs, it's the best I've heard (though I can't recall Save Me from Magnolia too well).

Why did Robin Williams perform it though?
