Oblivion Mod users, your help is needed.
« on: 13 Jan 2008, 10:17 »

Hey all, long time reader of QC, needed some help so though I would try you good people for info.

Just to clarify before I get into the meat of the post, I have searched for an answer myself, but became somewhat dumbfounded so...

I have been playing Oblivion of late, and I want to love it, the story is amazing, the world is great and the quests are interesting. I hate it right now however, as I cant stand the stupid levelling system and the way enemies level up with you.

Basically im left feeling that to make my character the way I want him to be, because of the way the levelling system works, I have to spend my time mostly doing everything I didn't design him to do. Then, shoudl I actually bother to do this, all the enemies in the game are going to level up with me, so no matter how powerful I get, I will always feel average.

Now.. wouldnt it be better if my character levelled up by practicing the things I want him to get better at, Sword play, armour, restoration magic, etc... and that the enemies in the game got progressively harder, rather than just matching me. Whats wrong with going back to the early areas of the game and slapping the crap out of weak enemies, and getting punished for trying to rush through the game with enemies that are way above your level.

So... Is there a mod, that will make your character level in a more normal fashion (think I found a few of those i nmy searches) but more importantly, make the game world feel a bit more sensible. I'm tired of feeling that I could rush through the main game and have all the enemies just keep at my level. I've heard it said that if you want you can plow through the whole game, never levelling up once if you so choose... MADNESS...

Hopefully someone can advise, as I would love to get more stuck into the story. P.s. Have only just closed the first oblivion gate by taking out a bunch of imps (point in case), so please no spoilers in case I do end up doing more of it.

All the best and thanks in advance

Luke.

Here's what I did: I googled "Oblivion level scaling removal mod" and looked for the best link in the top 5.

Voila. Alternately, you could just head to any of the Oblivion modding communities, of which there are several because the game really needs them.

Well yeah I did that, was wondering if anyone here actually had some direct experience of doing this as it was such a big game I presumed a few people here might have done it.

the story is amazing

It sounds like you've already got some pretty heavy mods installed, because that doesn't sound like my version of Oblivion!

I've modded a few things, they all worked perfectly. It should be safe to just download one that you find if it has good reviews.

I played through with one of the level scaling mods, most of which (as far as I can tell) "fix" the scaling by making sure you get max points in your chosen skills each time you level up, instead of basing the points on the bastard-retarded system in the default leveling schema.

It's certainly BETTER than the default leveling system, but it also makes the game quite a bit easier.

Then again, when I played through the first thing I did was collect/enchant a full invisibility armor set, so my game was essentially broken anyway.

I don't think that's the level scaling he's talking about. What he's talking about is the mechanism that makes sure that every enemy you encounter has its level scaled to yours. Same with found equipment. It makes the game pretty bland, as you never encounter anything that's really challenging. I beat Oblivion at level 9 after putting about 8 hours total into it. When I went to the Oblivion levels, all I fought were "weak scamps", right up until the end. Some army of darkness.

two links you NEED

http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showforum=25
http://aelius28.googlepages.com/home

the first is the official beth forum. OB mod subsection, good for most mods, though not for body mods(since it doesn't allow nudity, and pretty much all good body mods have at least 1 nude version), the 2nd is a's list of links, the top of the top, so to speak.
add FCOM(usually a topic on the first page of the forum), and you already have a much richer world to be in.
leveling mod wise; back when i actively played, i preferend KCAS to AF, but there's been a new generation of leveling mods, ngcd seems to be the most prominent of them, i'm gonna try it sooner or later.
my reccomendation, make 3 test chars for the different leveling mods, experiment with them, t hen choose what suits your needs.

If I'm reading you correctly, there are two problems you're talking about here.  One is that the leveling system is screwed up because it punishes you for using your major skills; the second is that the world levels with you, so there's no sense of progress.

For the first problem I recommend AF Leveling.  Essentially, it replaces the "sleep to level" system with one that automatically increases your attributes as you play based on your skill level.  Thus you can wander around hacking at stuff with your sword and blocking with your shield, and your Strength and Endurance (respectively) will automatically increase.  The page I linked has more details on the system's logistics.

For the second problem I recommend Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (often OOO).  This is an absolutely massive mod that changes pretty much everything in some way, so if you're planning to use other game-changing mods beware of conflicts.  There is a ton of documentation on the website and in the download, but you should really try to read it -- there's a lot going on here.  In fact, you might want to install the "lite" version, as the full one involves significant changes to the game, including new content, in the name of immersion.

That said, OOO is an absolutely fantastic piece of work, and far and away the best mod I've seen for fixing the "world levels with you" problem.  Seemingly every stat has been meticulously tweaked to find a perfect balance.  Keep in mind, though, that the game will be much more difficult once you can wander into areas and enemies that are above your level.

Good luck.
