It's a bit strange seeing Greg Gillis in this series of ads because he's always used a MacBook Pro..

Everytime I've seen him, he's used a Dell and, recently, a Tough Book.

Previously he used just a MacBook Pro. When I saw him this summer he had dual laptops, a MacBook Pro and a Dell.

Fuck's up, Greg Gillis?

As technology (in this case computers/music making programs) becomes more readily available to a wider variety of people, the realm of "art" becomes more democratic. It affords people without any formal training the opportunity to create something, however amateurish it may be. I guess if you argee that one of the main things about punk was the aestheticisation of amateurism, the fact that some 12-year old jerks dicking around on a laptop can make some music is actually pretty punk.

Quote from: Legs McNeil
This wonderful vital force that was articulated by the music was really about corrupting every form -- it was about advocating kids to not wait to be told what to do, but make life up for themselves, it was about trying to get people to use their imaginations again, it was about not being perfect, it was about saying it was okay to be amateurish and funny, that real creativity came out of making a mess, it was about working with what you got in front of you and turning everything embarrassing, awful, and stupid in your life to your advantage.

Legs McNeil droppin' truth bombs. That guy basically invented punk.

Computers are tru punx.

Personally, what I took from the video was he likes sweating on people who would rather be reading. Girl Talk hates literacy.

You know what the most punk rock thing ever was?

Brendan Kelly fucking smacking me in the back of my head with his bass and kicking a beer on me.

In his own mind he did, anyway. At best, he came up with the name and even that is heavily disputed.

Nothing about the Lawrence Arms could be considered "most punk" even in jest.

I was being mostly facetious. I do agree with a lot of what he has to say about punk though.

Oh god that clip is absolutely cringe-worthy.

Also I resent Forest Hills being referred to as a working class Republican neighborhood. The Ramones went to my elementary and high school, and there is nothing Republican or working class about this place. It's a fucking hole, filled with yuppies who got priced out of Manhattan.

FWIW, he uses AudioMulch for his live performances (and always has done)

Go to 0:32 - you can see the schematic view and the output meter display pretty clearly

Not sure how much manipulation he does live with it though - it could just be a glorified loop player. but who knows...

It's mostly used for processing and generating sounds during performance - essentially you can do anything, because you just hook up software things any way you like.

I use it atypically, for recording - I can make my own multi-channel desk and recorder for my ambisonic surround recording out of VST components, like this:

or this:

Plogue Bidule is a similar package with more built-in options, but a less tidy interface.  Here it is doing some maths on a multichannel recording:

Ooh, fancy!

Still a silly name for a program, though.

This thread is now about how we as a society are plummeting because we're still trying to fill the void left when Joe Strummer passed on

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

nice, pwhodges! it certainly is extendable - who makes the VSTs you're using in that screenshot?

here's me and how a remix I did ended up:

That was an interesting interview.

But I have to say, I think the whole twelve-year-old thing is awesome.  It's like the most indie thing ever.

I say indie, because I didn't remember my peers back at that age having the drive to participate in a counterculture.

That Iggy interview was great. I'd never seen any interviews with the guy before and I often wondered if the sheer primal force of his music came from a more considered place, or if he really was just the caveman/idiot savant that people sometimes make him out to be.

who makes the VSTs you're using in that screenshot?

Meters - because I was trained at the BBC, who defined that type of PPM;
Stereo Analyser - because it's pretty and fun...
VVMic - you need to know about Ambisonics and soundfield microphones to get the point of this.  I use a customised version which comes with my Core Sound TetraMic.

You can read more about how I use this stuff here, and get some samples here.
