No, not Rocket propelled grenades.

I've had the itch lately to jump into a console RPG, I was trying to find a fopy of FFIX, because it's the only game in the series I haven't played, but I was unable to find one at any of the local stores. I'm about to dive into looking around the internet.

So, any suggestions for PS2/Gamegube RPGs that you all enjoy? I don't have an xbox(More like buttsex box AMIRITE?), because I really just don't care for them enough to buy one, but I do have a PS2 and gamecube.

So, discuss FFIX, or other RPGs, I guess.

Final Fantasy IX is an excellent game (better than VIII). The Suikoden series is a nice enough distraction, but the real money's in Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, and Grandia.

I've already done the entire SO series. I've never even heard of Grandia. But I found a FFIX at amazon for $13USD, sO I'm gonna order than as soon as I can find my bank card.

Makai Kingdom. If you've ever played Disgaea, it's very similar. Alot of tongue-in-cheek humor, but still an interesting and in-depth game. It cracks on itself and Disgaea all the time.

The main character's first few lines consist of about this "I'm a FREAKIN OVERLORD"...."but I'm a FREAKIN OVERLORD." Hilarious.

Yes. If you see a game made by the fine folks at Nippon Ichi, you would be dishonoring your entire family by not purchasing it.

These include (and are mostly limited to)

Makai Kingdom
Disgaea
Phantom Brave
La Pucelle Tactics

If you've ever played Final Fantasy Tactics (which you should have), these are like that, but ten bagazillion times more original and good.

Besides those:

Skies of Arcadia (GCN)
Tales of Symphonia (GCN)
Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 (PS2)
Grandia 2 (GCN)
Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 (PS2)
FFIV-VI & Chrono Trigger (PSX) (Though you should have already played them for SNES)
Paper Mario II (GCN)
FFX (I enjoyed it a lot more than VIII or IX)

And probably more that I don't care enough about to remember at this time.

I've never really liked "Tactics" games.

Four menus to navigate to MOVE? No thanks.

I've already done the FF games and Chrono trigger, and I want something new.

I'll look into the Kingdom hearts games, though they always seemed a bit cartoony to me.

They are very cartoony. But if you can sit through the saccarine nonsense of Donald and Goofy, you'll find a very well done action RPG with a very good story.

I didn't like the original Kingdom Hearts, which is dampening my desire to check out the new one despite the rave reviews.

I own/have played every one of the other games except for Grandia 2 (which I could have sworn was on PS2, not Gamecube), and Skies of Arcadia. I've heard Skies of Arcadia is good, but I never picked it up for one reason or another.

Also, AVOID the original Dark Cloud. It wasnt so much a bad game, its just that some dungeon requirements were fucking brainless. Once i got stuck having to try to find the key with Goro in his hometown, i quit. That kid could not fight, and I basically had to kill every creature in the level. Possible, but gamebreakingly bad and stupid.

Yeah, Dark Cloud 1 wsn't a bad game.

It was just a mindless, tedious dungeon grind.

And Grandia 2 might've been on the PS2. I don't remember. It was on the Dreamcast before it was on either and that's what's important.

I love Nippon Ichi games, but they definitely are very niche titles and you say you don't like strategy RPGs.

I liked Xenosaga a lot.  I also got a kick out of Okage.  Neither is a must-have, but they are enjoyable games and you can pick them up used for like nothing (whereas Nippon Ichi games, for example, are still pretty much the same price as when they were first released.)

I actually got stuck in Okage. It's been so long since i played it that i cant remember how, or what i need to do, but it was somewhere near the middle.

That game was really short for an RPG though.

Wild Arms is a really fun old, old, old RPG for the playstation1. Thouasnad Arms, a kind of sequal, was also fun.

Good luck finding them though... they're kinda hard to come by.

sorry to say, thousand arms was not a sequel to wild arms. wild arms 2 was, though.

the original wild arms was redone and released for PS2 as Wild ARMs: Alter Code F

what the name means, I have no idea. I just got the game a few days ago and havent started it yet. i did beat the original years ago though. good fun.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I still own my original copy of Wild A.R.M.S.  I've played through it like eight times.

The last time I did, I was a dirty cheater and used the apples to get all my stats up to 255 before I got to the cave. That play through was fun.. 1 shotting the first real boss in the game.. hehehe.

I never really could gwet into the sequels though.

Xenogears. It was made by Square shortly after FF7. One of the best RPGs ever.

I have that game so hardcore momorized.

hehe. I've played a lot of the great ones, I'm an RPG junkie. I really liked the Xenogears combat system for a turn-based RPG.

I STRONGLY suggest Kingdom Hearts I and II. If you've read my review on the forum, it gets pretty in-depth on the entire game. I may 'only' give it a B+, but I haven't given any more than a B to any other game in my history of playing, so.

I also strongly, but not as strongly as the KHs, suggest Xenosaga Episodes I and II. Super complex story stuff, fun, entertaining battles, a lot of sidequest stuff to do, etc. and so forth.

I'll have to politley disagree on the Nippon Ichi games. They're kind of dumb and, while their battle systems are complex, the battles themselves get boring. Not to mention you don't ever feel like you've actually accomplished anything by beating them. That's just one man's opinion, though. So.

I realize Thousand Arms isn't a sequal, but it DOES take place in the same universe, it has the mysterious ARMS and cam out after Wild ARMS. Therefore, kinda sequal, but not really.

And now I'm tempted to go track down this Alter Code F you speak of...

and ARMS are just mysterious weapons...
