Hey, you know what's fun? Like, developing your own style of drawing things and sticking with that, generally rather than trying to imitate that of others. Just a thought.

Everyone starts out imitating someone else. Uniqueness takes time and practice.

Drawing hands is tricky, I recommend just staring at your own hands and practicing a lot.

I started out by imitating Todd McFarlane, and had his style down to the point where my art looked really close to his. Then I developed my own style.

Imitating an artist's style is a great way to start off, as long as you don't start putting your art out there and expecting people to eat it up while it's still an imitation of someone else.

I don't draw like him but I used the similar method of drawing faces as him (using a ball and cross on it) however i decided to try and do the eyes like he did, so a bit of familiar shape.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - porn!

Seriously! If you have trouble with figures, draw them naked and what's cheaper than life drawing classes? Porn!

Hands and feet are easy - you can use your own pretty easily, and I get my boyfriend to sit with his hand still so I can practise man hands.

Speaking of hands, many artists never really get them down right.  You know that famous portrait of Napolean Bonaparte with his hand in his coat pocket?  I was told the real reason as to why was simply because the painter couldn't do hands very well.

Alright, this is how I draw people, so if you disagree, cool - post your opinion, too, so this guy can choose what he likes best.

I can see from the second picture that you've drawn in a basic stick-figure skeleton, which is good. But I think your pictures would improve drastically if you drew in the figure, which from what I can see, you don't - do you just go straight to the clothes? Anyways, even if you are aiming for a cartoony style, it is good to get into the habit of drawing things more anatomically correct. Then it is easier to deviate from that.

Here is a tutorial that illustrates what I mean.

Only one: Draw from life. Got a digital camera? Take pictures. Study those pictures, and draw from them.  You won't want to take the time to make your drawings match exactly (unless you're going for a hyperrealist style) but over time you'll get a feel for what to draw and what to ignore.

Clothes are hard. How hard? Note that most of my characters are always naked. :)

that is a nice small tutorial.  the shaped box method is interesting, as i've been using a method where you basically draw a plastic molded ribcage first for anatomic correctnesseses.  i think that maybe drawing the box and adding detail later would be a lot quicker.

Some artists can be HOT SHIT at hands though. It's an integral skill for realistic or semi-realistic graphic novels, imo. My favourite artist just for hands is Koto Hirano, but even he cheats: he can't really do fingernails very well, so nearly all of his characters wear gloves.

I think it may just be how Hirano SHITS style though. (He did the Hellsing manga, which whilst not the best drawn ever, is infinitely the most stylish piece of shit on the planet).

That manga is really fun to look at, fo sho.

The secret I've found for hands is to just take your time. The slower you draw them the better they turn out.

In my case, when drawing hands, they start to look alright after I've erased them about 20,000 times. And that's only being mildly hyperbolic.

Great book! The drawings look batshit crazy but studying them really helps you get the idea of what pops out where and what is needed for a hand to look like a proper hand(and the rest of the body etc... kinda cheap too!)

http://mag.awn.com/index.php?ltype=Columns&column=vilppu

All around learny goodness!(and free)

Finally I highly suggest taking a day(8 hours) and drawing 125 hands(yours, friends, anyones) Try to take about 1-5 minutes per drawing. By the 40th you'll be bored and tired. Keep going. By 80 you'll have no idea what other poses you can do(this is where friends can help alot). If you hit 125 congratulations! You will now have the ability to draw a hand 5x better than you did 8 hours ago. Also, you will hate hand drawings and possibly me for giving you the idea to do this.

I'll take a look in my junk drawer later and see if I can find some before and after sketches from 99

Good luck!

I'm still not much of an artist, but the best advice anyone can offer is: Practice. Just draw as much as you can.

And imitation isn't always bad. If you can imitate another artists style for a little while, just to get the basics down, that'll always help you get the hang of anatomy and so on. And then you can play with things, until you start to get something that you think looks good.

Of the little monster guys, I'd definitely go with the one with the eyebrows.  I think a combination of the eyebrows and the shape of the mouth can give you plenty of emotions to work with.

Are you planning on keeping it's eyes shaped just that one way, or would they open/close/partial depending on mood?
