Chucks + Sharpie = Awesome
« on: 17 Mar 2006, 02:21 »

This is a pair of Chuck Taylors decorated with Sharpies (I just got one of the rainbow 12-packs and used all the colors except the brown and black) that I did for a friend of mine.  I've made 3 pairs so far.  The first I did for my girlfriend as a birthday present.  The second I did for her some months later, after she broke up with me, because she paid me 20 bucks to decorate another pair so she could give them to her new boyfriend (hey, 20 bucks is 20 bucks, and she paid for all the materials ... I just had fun).  The one I posted above was one I did for her to give to someone else she knew.

Honestly, I don't know why I don't do these more often.  I prefer wearing shoes that are much sturdier than the ones that can be reliably Sharpie'd (read: are made of something that isn't cloth), so I don't wear them myself, but they're really fun to make and people tend to like them.  People have even told me to advertise them and make money off it, but the thing is that the materials cost 40-50$ alone, so I wouldn't be able to sell for very much profit, if any.

Wow! Those are pretty cool! Well done!

So "Chuck Taylor's"  is another name for Converse?

Most people I know just call them Chucks.  I mean, they say "Chuck Taylor" on them, and Converse makes more shoes than just these, so it makes a certain amount of sense.  Besides, it sounds more like what the shoe is, in my opinion.  Calling them "Chucks" sounds young and inexpensive and fun, and the people who buy them are, in my expience, kids with a low budget who want fun shoes.

OK, now that's just obscene.

They used to cost 20 bucks a pair ... now it's probably more around 40 (I'm pretty sure the last pair I bought was for 40).  35 GBP is just nuts.  It's a few pieces of cloth attached to a piece of rubber!  That's it!  Cheapness is the whole point!

But then, trucker hats were going for 60 bucks or something like that at one point, so I shouldn't act so surprised.

You can totally blame this on the fact that Nike kinda bought Converse.

You could always get fake ones.

Not bad, though of course, I wouldn't wear any converse, let alone those, for anything less than a considerable sum of cash.

I wouldn't either. Mostly because they totally don't look good on me at all. And I had to wear them for an acting thing and they were uncomfortable as shit.

Converse arn't my style. All the scene kids wear them and that sort of put me off. But those look pretty awesome I have to say.

I bet if you stared at them long enough you could go crazy with all those funky colours. :)

man, when i was in 8th grade my cons cost me 12 bucks at footlocker. trends man. crazy.

also, these are pretty cool, but i imagine you couldn't really wear them that often? if they got wet at all they would bleed/get mucky pretty easily wouldn't they?

also.. are those white cons or something i dont know about? how would sharpies completely overtake pre-existing cons?

Sell the designs to converse! Sell out!

I'd wear these in a heartbeat. But then again ... my mountaineering shoes (which I wear every day) still have their christmas decoration on.

Pfah!
When I was a lad a pair of All Stars only cost me a nickel, and I bought them from Chuck Taylor himself!
And they were made to last back then!
I still have my pair of red high tops.
They're getting on seventy years old now and the only wear they show for it is a bit of scuffing from my days in the mines.

that is awesome.  how long does it take to do?  usually sharpie on chucks bothers me, since it's all the scene kids drawing big X's on thier toes or UU kids writing silly things.
And Chucks are not that expensive, and do hold up quite well.  I got mine two years ago (i needed black shoes for stagecrew) for like $15 at Hot Topic.  I wear them every day now and they're fine.

Whoops, I should actually be talking about stuff on this thread.

It generally takes about 3-4 hours to do a pair.  The first pair took mroe like 6 but it doesn't take long to get used to the process.

Yes, the Chucks are (were) white.  I wasn't aware that white was a rare or unknown color.

They fade a little eventually, but I don't think the colors bleed together very easily.  As long as you're careful about where you wear them (basically, anywhere they won't get wet and muddy) they'll last.

Those are pretty amazing!

Dude, chucks and sharpie are such a great combination.  When I was in high school, I was constantly drawing all over mine.  Haha in fact, when I was 14, I had Ben Kweller and some of the kids from Ozma sign my chucks, I thought I was soooooo cool.  Oh man!

my last pair of chucks were like that. although i wrote dominic monoghan qoutes all over them. they tore up within six months. for once the indie cliche was right : i liked you better before you sold out. although black ones seem to last longer. discuss.

when i first saw the subject i was really turned off (apologies, but really, the first thing that comes to mind is how in junior high i scrawled cringe-worthy stuff with black sharpie all over my knock-off chucks from payless) but wow. you are super talented! i dunno why, reminds me of http://www.ducttapefashion.com/ in terms of diy coolness. anyways. hmm would you be interested in taking commissions? :D at the very least you should totally take commissions from your friends living in your area, just make 'em buy the shoes to use first, that should cut down the cost right?

and hey, you could use your awesome skills on all kinds of shoes, not just chucks. slip-ons from payless come to mind.
