they're great and everyone loves them, but what are your favourites ?
why do you like them ?
and besides the "big hitters" like the romero trilogy+1 and fulci's zombie flesh eaters (aka zombi 2) what's worth watching ?

personally, i'm still a big fan of the 'classics', night, dawn and day are all amongst my favourite movies.
i love the way the zombie apocalypse is almost a back drop to the human survival, unlike some which are purely about OTT bloodshed. i like the way the walking dead comic series has picked up this idea too (without the limitations of low budget film making) and let us into the lives of some survivors as they try not to be torn to shreds.

i have to say i was a little dissappointed by land of the dead, but only because having a comparitively large budget seemed to give romero a slight case of moneyitis. so whereas before we might've seen a clever little suggestion of violence or a lot of tension building moments, in land we got zombies popping up in full view left right and centre.

another thing which has just sprung to mind, zombies seem to be the only movie monster that can still be creepy/scary in the glaring light of the afternoon sun, all of the others need to stalk about in the dark (well most of them anyway)

[sorry if this has been done before]

Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness.

Sure, it's Deadites not Zombies, but still, these fucking own.

I have a fondness for the Re-Animator movies, based (loosely) on Lovecraft's short story, Herbert West, Re-Animator.  There are three of these.

Also, there are some Army of Darkness comics (adaptation of the movie, I think), but the company is doing/has done an AoD Re-Animator crossover.  The first issue is good - I think I spotted 1-5 at the local shop.

Walking Dead is really good, soap.  Kirkman's pretty cool, too.  Admitted to my class he purposefully wanted to use more dialogue in that series than one normally finds in a comic book.

Zombie (australian film) is pretty good if you... don't mind a really campy zombie film. I rather liked the return of the living dead series.

Oh! Add Cemetery Man to the list. Cemetery Man remains one of my favorite films.

The Evil Dead movies all own (yes even the 3rd one) and so does Versus. Man, I miss my zombie movies...
I love all the ones mentioned here but I also liked Redneck Zombies. Very cheesy and Troma, but still fun to watch.
I too was terribly dissapointed by Land of the Dead. I thought the idea was fantastic and really could have taken the movie somewhere but in the end it just felt like a cheap way to end the series. Lame.

I'm confused on what you mean by "even the 3rd one." AoD is the most popular one in the series. Most people I know, who have no clue who Bruce Campbell is, have seen and loved Aod.

As for Land of the Dead.....come on, it's a fine movie, just don't take it seriously. None of the "...of the dead" movies are scary, so just sit back and laugh at it.

when i saw land of the dead at the cinema with my dad (yes a 21yr old can still do that!) and i think he was more dissappointed than i was by the happy ending. i'm saying it was a bad movie, i just wasn't a big fan of the more upbeat cheery almost action movie feel it had.

personally i'd say evil dead 2 is the best of that series...AoD was a bit too slapstick and on the first one you can tell that sam & his team were all still finding their feet as film makers.

Ok, on the Evil Dead series.

Evil Dead 2 is the best of the three
AoD is the most popular
Evil Dead 1 is meant to be scary, whereas the other two aren't.

On Shaun of the Dead
Simply put, it's the best comedy since The Big Lebowski.

what I think is neat is the more lively zombies of 28 Days later and the re-make Dawn of the Dead. I liked how if they saw a human, they'd get pissed off anf run full force at the person trying to rip them to shreds, alot more scarier than the shambling of zombie movies past.

no, not strictly speaking (the 'infected' are still alive afterall),  but it does share a lot of the conventions of the zombie genre so it probably should count.

yea i agree on counting 28DL even though its not a zombie movie.
also; romero+infinity (except land of the dead. i just plain didnt like it)
i <3 lovecraft so i like the re-animator movies no matter how cheesy they are.
anyone seen The Dead Hate The Living? its pretty goofy but it has the tallest man in the world (forgot his name, he was in bigfish) playing a zombie and its great. super cheese factor.

this is the internet so i wanna know if any of you guys have seen Cannibal Holocaust? aparently its banned in the u.s....(?) anyway i heard it was gnarly and want to see it.

i've not seen it but ... i volunteer for oxfam in a second hand bookshop they run here in newcastle (uk) and someone donated a load of 80s gore magazines, so i got to keep all the unsellable ones.
theres a scathing article about it in one of the issues of Deep Red which derides its use of real footage of animal slaughter and general excessive sexual violence and its exploitative nature. the jist of the piece seems to be; that horror and gore films are all well and good when taken in the right context but this is just a cynical and perverse "snuff film" which crosses the bounds of taste and moral decency even for the most hardened gore fan.

and yes someone does apparently get their penis chopped off in an unflinchingly graphic scene.[/quote]

This is what most non-Campbell fanpeople tell me (my mum hated that Good Ash/Bad Ash fight so much she had to leave the room) and usually even the big fans say they prefer the first two (usually Dead By Dawn), so that's why I say even the third one. Personally I love all three for different reasons.
And I still think Land of the Dead was shitty. I couldn't even laugh at it it was so bad. Seriously, it was hyped as the best, most gory of the series and it was soooo lame *shakes head* maybe he just lost his magic?

I've seen Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox, but with the animal cruelty scenes in Cannibal Holocaust cut.

I think the real problem with them is they're not actually that good :p There's gore, and there's nudity, but the effect is lost. Something like 'I Spit On Your Grave' is far more horrific with a lot more...understatement. If ISOYG can be said to be understated in any way.

I really liked Shaun of the Dead because it was hilarious and alo had its good scenes. Land of the Dead was good because it focused a lot on the society of a post-apocalyptic world as well as some good zombie stuff.

28 days later really got to me because it had fast zombies, which are even more fucking scary than regular-type.

perhaps they're so strong because they have no feelings so instead of lifting something and going "ooh, me back, thats too much for me" they just keep going. but then again the zombies in romeros dawn are really feeble ... they're forever getting pushed over and brushed off.

one of the things i love about the slow shambling zombies is that they're so relentless, the scare factor comes from the constant sense of dread, the knowledge that no matter how fast or far you run they will always keep coming, they will never give up and eventually, they will get you.
i always think the fast zombies of the new dawn and the infected of 28days later are more of a "BOO!" kind of jump scare which is only really effective the once, then it just starts getting a bit tired.
not that zombie movies are ever particularly scary anyway.

Just pales in comparison to #2.  Otherwise, a fine flick.

I found Land of the Dead really amusing.  Hey, the gore was great, and I found Dennis Hopper's Dr. Breen-esque performance oddly compelling.

Return of the Living Dead for the proverbial win.

If you want a classic zombie movie, you got to go with Return of the Living Dead.  It's so God awful its funny.  If you want a great zombie experience you should read "The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From the Living Dead".  Its a serious take on surviving a zombocalypse.

Except maybe that if you like zombie movies and you like comic books, you should read Walking Dead.
