Calling All Artistic People!
« on: 02 Apr 2006, 12:39 »

I have a requst from all you artistic people out there on the interweb. I have an anniversary coming up for my girlfriend and I'm going to make her a mix-cd I belive. The thing is I'd like to design something for the cover of it and have NO artistic ability, so I was wondering if I could recruit one of you outragously artistic people to help me out, I realize that you should probably have the track-list and all of that beforehand and seeing as I haven't made it yet that's a little challening, I just figured I'd see if there's anyone out there at all interested. I'm not asking for it to be amazing or anything, just something a little better than I'm capable of making, and I don't plan on claiming I designed it and full credit will defenitly be given.

Oh and I have no money, and will not be able to pay you, unless you're in southern manitoba than I can pay you in beers.

I'm not THAT artistic, but I'd be glad to help. I draw weird stuff that sometimes comes out alright. Like this thing:

Yeah, I'm weird like that.

I'd certainly do it. I have the time, as long as you like, get it up in the next couple of days.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Alright, thanks so much for the responses and the thing is I'm not exactly sure what I'd like, I mean the thing is we don't have any pictures of us together (weird yes I know) and while I have pictures of her, and pictures of myself I'm not sure if either of them would really be great for the cover.

I'm thinking of something that's rather abstract and colourful, just an interesting design perhaps her favorite colors are yellow and purple, her name is allison and my name is pat. I'm not sure what else I really have in mind, but you guys are all awsome for even thinking about doing this.

I almost have the track list done and I'm sure you won't approve Kai seeing as there's no metal on it but here it is as of right now. Granted it will probably undergo some changes yet.

I'll Be Yr Bird - M. Ward
Dress sexy at my furneral - Smog
Naked As We Came - Iron & Wine
Make Out Fall Out Make Up - Love Is All
A Good Man Is Hard To Find - Sufjan Stevens
You've Gone Away Enough   Mirah    - C'mon Miracle
The Other Side Of Mt. Heart Attack - Liars
Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits - The Magnetic Fields

Disc 2 :

I'll Be Your Jonny On The Spot - Ween
Magic Hours - Explosions In the Sky
Spit On A Stranger - Pavement
Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk - Rufus Wainwright
Scenes From a Musical Dream (Janie Jane) - Steve Keys
Horny Ghost - The Joggers
Nobody 'Cept You - Bob Dylan
The Dress Looks Nice On You - Sufjan Stevens
What the Snowman Learned About Love - Stars
Let's Move To The Country - Smog
I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen

edit 1, I put the Dylan song in disc 2.

I agree.  Though you have no artistic ability, I think your girlfriend would appreciate that you did it yourself.  It's much more personal that way.

It worked well for Kind of Blue.  Of course, your mix is an entirely different style.

I'm sure there was a time when giving your lady a gift covered in your own semen was a very moving message. for better or for worse, our era is nothing like that.

i... don't know why I thought of that.

Ok I think what you asking is what material reminds me of her the most? That's tough, I guess... brown coudoury. If this is not at all what you were asking I apologize.

Such a great song, that.  The title may throw people askance, but how can you not love it when Miles cuts it up?  So beautiful one might want to cry.

And better than, say,
Atmopshere - Shoes

I suspect my particular brand of ultramodern design may not be what the doctor ordered

Bassist was on track with the DIY comment, in my opinion.  It really says something when you throw together something yourself, regardless of how good you think it is.  Chicks dig that sentimental crap.

I appreciate the help, even though the ultra-modern stylings aren't exactly what I had in mind, and as far as the "do it your own damn self" remarks I agree with that as well, that's why i'm making her a shirt, and I figured well that's going to looks like crap so may as well get some decent looking cd art.

Now I get it.  I was confused when I thought that you weren't actually going to be doing anything yourself, aside from picking out tunes to put on there.

Well, I don't know if I'd call that tune "cut[ting] it up" (he does that on plenty of other tunes), but it is incredible, despite Paul Chambers's mild intonation issues.  His lines are pretty cool.  Impossible to hear at points, but cool (one of my projects for last semester was transcribing his lines under Miles's and 'Trane's solos).

1. Beginning jazz combos killed "So What" for me a long time ago. :(
2. Please don't quote the people above you! We'll know who you're talking to even if you don't.

You know I DO have an old, shitty, brown courdoury jackey laying around somewhere...

Damn after a little thinking I realized that it would be impossible for me to incorperate the zipper of the jacket into the CD cover. Though that would have been sweet.

actually that's a thought, do try and experiment with it, measure the size of the case, get a very thin but hard cardboard, glue the corduroy on it if it not too thick and bingo, an unique album cover from next to nowt mate!

I think we just nailed it lads!

I was gonna say before I read to the bottom of the thread that I made CD's for my girlfriend as well and I used felt for the covers and cut up different colored pieces and pasted them in patterns on the cover piece. She loved it. (As far as I could tell)
