Anyone heard of these guys?
« on: 06 Apr 2006, 18:36 »

Hey. I just wanted to post a very short thread (as im sure it'll turn out to be)...

My father went to Ukraine to visit his parents about 2 weeks ago, came back with a bunch of kickass music dvd's and cd's (He actually found a copy of Chicago and Earth, Win & Fire in concert together on dvd O_O...i love it...3 hours of fun). Anyway, so he got this one CD which is like funk mixed with pop. I really hate commercial music...u dont know how much. But for some reason this album really appeals to me. I can't put my finger on it but it seems like all the notes I hear are exacty what I WANT to hear. Never heard of the band before but I was just wondering if anyone here has.

They're called SPICE and the album is called '69 Overdrive'.

I'd suggest the literal translations would screw it up a bit.

Maybe 'violent' is meant to be more like, 'vigrous.'

thanks senor dk.
maybe i didn't make this clear.

please add the following disclaimer -

" On the 7th April 2006 forum-goer 'tommydski' utilised the Google translation tool to manipulate a german pop group's bio. In a recent interview he gave the following statement -

"i admit that i used a literal translator in an effort to create a humorous outcome. I remember the fond era of the internet when people had a sense of humour and i was attempting to recreate those golden days. I did not mean for this to be a slight on the fine people of Germany or their proud heritage."

The once proud auteur then shook his head gravely for a solemn moment before producing a small calibre handgun and discharging it into his own brain. "

I know you were. I was just trying to flex my translating muscle.

Trust me, the rock may be in Nottingham, but it's in stinkhole venues in which your feet stick to the floor and there are four or more bars, the sound-desk is usually run by people barely evolved beyond monkeys, and there is a constant smell of rank man-sweat. And it's not just being at a gig either, I've been in there when it's empty.

you are a good sport sir.

i am jealous because you have rock in nottingham. there is no rock for me here in bournemouth. there is only sand.

i weep.

Bournemouth? You live impressively close to me.

Even if I'm on holiday in Canada right now.

hmm...well I suppose one can't really be surprised...i mean it is a pop-like band anyway. Still, however, as much as I hate myself for saying this...I quite enjoyed 69 Overdrive.

what i mean is i normally would hate this type of music - 'commercial shitiness'...but this time for some strange reason I like it. It reminds me a lot of the pop funk of the 70's and 80's...(fuckin hate the 80's, but the 70's I enjoy mostly because of it being so true to its origins - jazz/soul)

What a prejudiced view of music. Commercialism isn't always a bad thing.

What are you talking about O_O...commercialism is terrible for music. Have you heard of the crap they put on the radio? I'm sorry for offending you, if I am (clearly I am)...but the shit they put on is well...shit. I see no musical aspects in it besides the use of rhythm. This being the genre 'house' that's hit it big. I really hate the fact that people are so goddamn musically illiterate that when you show them a Tower of Power or an Average White Band track they say it's stupid 'jazz' that has no rhythm O_O.

The only time commercialism works is when you introduce your style at the right time. Earth, Wind & Fire managed that...they introduced pop mixed with funk when funk/rnb was starting to take hold. So therefore they had something 'new'.

Then there's people like Frank Zappa who don't get the slitest bit of praise for their work because they play "stuff that is wierd" (a friend so colourfully put it). Then you hear comments like "this sounds like shit" and things that actually sound "good" are your common DOOFDOOF.

Commercialism in my view is what sells. That's why I hate it. No musicality, good looking...that's what normally sells. That's why indie bands are so successful to just a few...because just a few respect music in more than one form.
No commercialism isn't always a bad thing...but it's not always a good thing.
What I was trying to say before is I like what SPICE had to offer...I just hate the fact that they were introduced in such a poor way as to deteriorate to nothingness...they had a good thing going.

Now-I disagree with you on this one. Rap and Hip-hop have musical qualities beyond just rhythm, though it is a predominate factor. If your sole interest in music is listening to things that are 'indie' and 'cool', then I can see why you don't like 'commercialism'. Go buy an album by Quasimoto-very Zappa influenced rap. (It even has the Freak Out! speech bubble on one of his albums.)

Commercial music can be good. It's music that TRIES to be commercial, and in the event bastardizes itself that's bad.

I like Kanye West. I enjoy two songs off of the new Black Eyed Peas album my sister has. (Bebot and what is ironically and somewhat hypocritically called 'They Don't Want Music', designed to cash in on people JUST LIKE YOU...)

Quoth Frank Zappa- "If it sounds good to you, it's bitchen, if it doesn't, it sucks."

And while we're on the Zappa quoting bandwagon:

"Anyone who is disturbed by the idea of newts
in a nightclub is potentially dangerous."
-Zappa

Is it relevant? Not really.

Yeah, hip hop can have some good things. I mean, Deltron 3030, WHAT? Yeah.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I consider myself a fairly big Zappa fan, and I have never heard of this quote. What exactly is the context?

He said it at the PMRC Hearings. Someone was quoting some of his lyrics (which were abouts newts and nightclubs and stuff) and that they found it "disturbing".

Ahh, but let us also recall that the Funky One said, in the liner notes for Freak out:

Quote from: Frank Zappa
On a personal level, Freaking Out is a process whereby an individual casts off outmoded and restricting standards of
thinking, dress, and social etiquette in order to express CREATIVELY his relationship to his immediate environment and the social structure as a whole.

Also:

Modern music is a sick puppy.

Also:

Quote from: Frank Zappa
I write the music I like. If other people like it, fine, they can go buy the albums. And if they don't like it, there's always
Michael Jackson for them to listen to.

Music doesn't commercialize itself.  People commercialize music.  Big, corporate-minded labels tend to motivate their artists to produce regularly, and produce toward the lowest common denominator.  I mean -- this is truistic -- that's how you make a buck.  In no way, never, can commercialization be good for music, to the extent that we seek spirituality, meaning, and inspiration from music.  But on the other hand, if you see music as something pleasant you put in the background while you're doing something else, commercialization can be great for music.

In sum, "commercialized" music doesn't necessarily suck (hey, I liked Gorillaz), but music, by dint of being "commercialized", can never be improved, and almost always suffers in its artistry.  And Zappa would agree with that, I think, even if he would make fun of me for how I expressed it.

thats exactly what i meant O_O...i meant - commercial music CAN be good...i just really hate the shit that sounds like everything else. And I was never really into indie music until last year when a friend introduced a few new bands into my life. I love music in general...the fact that it's a way we like to express one another. And some music is good in the way that it can envelope a person in another's world, if you don't like that world you can just press 'stop', however if you love it...then u keep listening. That's why I hate commercial music which is nothing that's from, forgive the corny line here - 'deep within'. I prefer music that's stylistic on its own (doesn't sound like something else). Many good commercial bands have pulled this off well, and succeeded in doing so. Lynkin Park for example.

Anyway...incase I haven't mentioned this before...not sure I have...I'm merely stating and have been stating my own opinion. I haven't been trying to make everyone side with something like 'COMMERCIAL MUSIC IS  SHIT AND SHOULDNT EXIST BECAUSE ITS SUCH CRAP THAT I LIKE TO GO ON ABOUT STUPID STUFF AND I DONT KNOW WHY IM STILL TYPING AND SO ON AND BLAH BLAH BLAH SOMEBODY SHUT ME UP' O_O

so anyway...

seeing as we've currently jumped to talking about Zappa...I would like to pointlessly mention that I personally believe (yes that means its my opinion im not trying to make everyone side with this like you thought i did with the commercialist crap)...that Joes Garage is the best album I have ever heard O_O. I'm still trying to find albums by other artists that would overrule that...but personally (refer to previous in-bracket thing) I really love it.
