So, has anyone seen these 6+6+06 things posted all around cities? I live in Chicago and there everyfreakingwhere. I saw some red spray painted spiral of six's on the way to school today. And thought, maybe some kind of weird liberal revolutions coming up, and I didn't know about it.

So I did some Googling, turns out its actually for some retarded movie coming out called Omen. Some re-make crap. I think any movie that goes to the extent of vandalizing public property, littering fliers every were and just generally playing off the Americanpanic fever, should not be seen.

Aslo, so this has something to do with music....

Does J really not like Ben Folds? I think Ben is great, personally. Just because somethings "Pop" doesn't make it bad. Ya'll should download the song Army, Kate, or Last Polka. Older stuff. Give it a seccond listen.

Admittedly, his newer stuff is more 'emo' sounding, and his Ben Folds Five stuff is a lot better.

Also, admittedly, 80 bucks for concert tickets?

Get' da' fug' out of here.

Cheers,
Tank.

When I saw the title for this thread, I thought it was going to be along the lines of this, which was posted in the "stonerrock" LiveJournal community.

"THE NATIONAL DAY OF SLAYER: 6/6/06

Official Statement on Participation

    * Listen to Slayer at full blast in your car.

    * Listen to Slayer at full blast in your home.

    * Listen to Slayer at full blast at your place of employment.

    * Listen to Slayer at full blast in any public place you prefer.

DO NOT use headphones! The objective of this day is for everyone within earshot to understand that it is the National Day of Slayer. National holidays in America aren't just about celebrating; they're about forcing it upon non-participants."

Maybe I'll make 6/6/06 the day when I decide to listen to Slayer for the first time to figure out what they're like anyway.  I'll probably just end up listening to Sabbath the whole day, though.

Also the day AFI releases their new album, "Decemberunderground". From the sounds of their first single, "Miss Murder", the album looks promising.

That's the way of the world. The big companies are starting to use underground and DIY techniques to market their stuff. Punk Planet has been doing extensive coverage on this kind of stuff, from Nike's usage of the Minor Threat cover to Lucas Arts setting up 'zines and such for the release of Episode III to Sony putting up seemingly homegrown grafitti in and around Los Angeles to advertise the PSP.

But that's a really tricky question to address, and I'm not even sure of my opinions on it. My opinions on Ben Folds are a lot easier to express.

Thumbs up to most of his work with the Five. Those three guys together had something really good going, and it's a shame that it had to end. At least they came out on somewhat of a high note with Reinhold Messner. They even managed to make the Godzilla soundtrack good with one of their best songs, "Air".

His first solo album, Rockin' the Suburbs has a few good tracks on it, but at least half the songs on it are throwaways. Songs for Silverman, however, is the debut of a much more mature, somber Ben Folds. I think it's a great album, and easily on par with any of his previous work. Plus, Weird Al does backing vocals!

That last part probably didn't help my point much.

I really think the only reason Slayer sells more records than everyone else in the thrash scene except Metallica is because they are waaaaay into the Satanist thing. Hence, every idiot teenager trying to piss off their parents by wearing shit with pentagrams blasts them at full volume and everyone suffers.

But I hate Slayer, and I've said shit like this in the past, so... carry on.

Sony went around spraypainting PSP adverts in graffiti areas. They were all painted over and insulted/boycotted by many of the areas. The use of graffiti for corperate advertisement is so mindboggling it makes me sick.

Not only that, but once the PSP adverts were sprayed over by artists, Sony employees would come back out, usually within less than a day, and re-do the adverts. That particular situation just makes me sad.

Sony's effort to market the PSP as the 'street' game system is just generally stupid and highly distasteful from my perspective.

But what the hell does any of this have to do with music?

Well its relevant in that the same thing happens with music all the time: the underground is constantly being co-opted and sold-off some way or another. For years record companies have been taking underground aesthetics and painting their manufactured pop bands with them. It happens with just about every aspect of culture actually. Labels have already begun to sign any accessible band they can label as indie. It won't take long for corporations to start manufacturing the rest of the culture. Five years from now everyone on MTV will be smoking cloves and talking about Donnie Darko( (ok, not quite).

The question is two-fold. Is it really the end of the world if our culture is co-opted and is their any way of preventing it?

Personally, I'd rather go back to basics and put on some Black Sabbath.

Besides which, they're not really comparable. It's not like Slayer represent...well, anything particularly innovative or great really. They have a few good tracks, and most metalheads will probably own Reign in Blood even if they don't really like Slayer. However, I can't remember the last time I heard a band mention Slayer as an influence, for example.

Not that bands aren't influenced by Slayer, its just more of them are probably influenced by, for example, Venom.

i'll bet almost every single metal band you could name has a slayer album in their collection. it's the same with punk and the ramones.

So just because one of the three members of a band I like has a Slayer cd, suddenly I must respect Slayer? Or did I miss the point?

Is'nt it funny? A band that makes a living off of satan turning down one of the most talented Metal drummers just because he was to evil. Turned down due to his "extreme occult believes". Pussies.

Actually, I kinda like old 90's Slayer. *runs for cover*

6/6/6 is, by the way, also the release date for the new Obituary disc.

I had the chance to see Slayer. But I left the concert after Cradle Of Filth. There are limits, you know.

I've seen Slayer.

Great light-show (like, fucking WOAH. I've still seen fewer things more metal live than the intro to South of Heaven, where giant projected crucifixes slowly turned upside down), but the performance was decidedly lackluster.

You know what though? For all people may rag of them, they should not have been billed BELOW Slipknot.

Hell, very few things should.

The cumulative weight of Slipknot's many unneccessary members alone should drag it down.

Guys I am so pissed off that 06/06/06 is being overmarketed so much. Bands think they're all cool and shit, releasing their album on that day. "The Omen" being released then, however apropos, remains tacky. Leave my birthday alone, asswads.

This reminded me of a band that killed their bass player because they thought he was evil or something. Anyone remember what band it was? I think it was some Norwegian death metal band or something.

You're thinking of the Burzum/Mayhem Varg Vikernez/Euronymous murder. Norwegian Black Metal.

I'd go into it, but the story's been told too many times for my taste.

From everything I've read, I'm kinda surprised Varg got to him first. The stories change quite a lot, but Necrobutcher has claimed at least once that it was Euronymus who drove Dead to commit suicide by constantly and maliciously undermining his mental state.

It was actually somewhat longer, and also apologised for using the shotgun inside as the knife wasn't sharp enough, if I remember correctly.

What's strange to me is that Attila left Aborym to rejoin Mayhem. Okay, not strange, Mayhem is more prestigous and pays moderately better, but still, way to crap up a band. I hope they get the Alien Vampires guy in on vocals.

i have never listened to slayer. so i shall keep up this trend on slayer day and when somebody asks me why i'm not listening to slayer, i'll say i'm boycotting. and possibly carry earplugs around to convince people i am actually boycotting when i really just don't care. i'd really rather listen to sabbath...

I am probably going to spend whatever day this is drinking and carousing. If you need to dedicate a specific day to Satan in order to be drunken and lustful, you're really just dropping the ball. Plus, releasing an album/movie on that day to be super-fucking evil is just pretty lame.

And from a guy that sang along to Abba yesterday for the sheer goddamn melody of it, that is pretty fucking demeaning.

Hell, thats what we should do. Listen to Abba backwards. My guess is that it will sound exactly the same. (Ha! Clever! PALINDROMES)
