Screaming Trees
The Expendables
Pearl Jam, simply because they arent a jam band
The Casual Fiasco, who IS a jam band
Abandon Jalopy, just because of how silly it sounds

Also, i think that Black Cab Motorcade, a song by the band State Radio, would make an absolutely awesome band name. People could hire them to play on top of the cars in the motorcade of the funural of important people.

Echo and the Bunnymen
The Appleseed Cast
The Album Leaf
Deerhoof
Sufjan Stevens

Also, I have a friend who's band is called "Legato." Legato is a musical style defined as being a "smooth, even style without any noticeable break between the notes." This describes the band perfectly.

As opposed to Coldplay, which is a musical style defined as being a "smooth, even style without any noticeable difference between the songs."

It's not a musical style, per se, just a type of phrasing in music.

Yeah, I know... it's usually used as a direction in a musical piece. It's just a great way to describe their songs and it IS a style of music.

Hmm...

I always liked "Passengers" for a band name.  It's probably been used.  I have a mental image of the eponymous album, with the band giving each other piggyback rides running along the top of a sand dune.

Anyway, a few real bands whose names I like...

The Ballistic Brothers
Thievery Corporation
Fila Brazilia
Morcheeba
Foundation
Nightmares on Wax
The Clash
Radar
The Exile Brothers

I know it's been mentioned before, I but I love the name Skyclad. It's just such a wonderfully evocative name. Wearing the sky, as it were. A beautiful image.

Codeine. Short, and it fits the hazy, druggy music the band made.

The Fall. It's short, it's sharp, it's a Camus reference.

Josef K. Science has proven that anything with nods to Kafka rules by default.

Banco de Gaia. I may be biased by the fact that I have an unhealthy, possibly illegal love for Toby Marks' music, but like Skyclad, this is one of those names that evokes beautiful images in my mind. Speaking of BdG, Toby's nightmare of has come true in the form of the Qinghai-Xizang railway line.

The Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine (because the song from the War of the worlds soundtrack is cool as hell)
Circle Takes the Square (just because)
cLOUDDEAD (it's so damn artsy and snobbish that you can't help but like it)
Dat Politics (there's something glitchy and itchy in both the name and music)
Envy (...)
Heavy Heavy Low Low (very very stupid bandname but funny band, check their hidden track on Courtside Seats)
Johnossi (uhm dunno why)
Katzenstreik (german.. BOOYA!)
Mew (because you can write it backwards and all sorts of cool things)

It really is a beautiful image, though to me it invokes hippy modern day pagans/Wiccas who use it as a synonym for 'naked'.

Banco de Gaia

This band name frustrates me because I always see them come way more frequently than what I'm actually looking for when looking for Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (often shortened to Banco). Same with Death in Vegas, Death in June, Death Cab for Cutie, etc, when searching for just plain Death.

I think I've mentioned Gojira before in this thread, but without any significant explanation.

First of all, the name is just plain awesome. Short, catchy and easily shouted. Their lyrics also deal with a lot of environmental (mother Earth having her revenge, Flying Whales, that sort of stuff), where Godzilla has some significance. Godzilla was created by nuclear testing, ie. Man's carelessness with Nature, and that naturally resulted in Tokyo being laid to waste around 60 times. Nuclear testing's a bitch, ain't it?!

But the final touch, is that their sound and riff style fit the name even better. When they get heavy, they really do sound like some gargantuan force of nature, stomping along.

Emperor is also a favorite, because they really sound that majestic.

Dredg is a neat name for a band. So's Giant Drag (http://www.giantdrag.com/), IQU (pronounced e-cue), Aphex Twin, Kasabian, and Deftones.

As for the best band name I came up with, it would probably be "Defecate Solo." Usuable with permission. (heh)

PS. As for Japanese bands, I'd have to say Tokyo Jihen, L'arc~en~Ciel, and Dir en Grey have great names.

Welcome to my first post, my friends!

Anyways, if I were to start a band it would be called "Smart Cookie", but I'd probably get into legal issues with a cookbook with the same name.Meh....

Now, as for actual bands, I enjoy the name "Wolfmother", just because it really fits their stoner rock style of music.

Seriously, they might be indie everywhere else but in Australia Wolfmother are EVERYWHERE. And i mean that their music is everywhere, the band is everywhere, people with the band's shirts are everywhere... its a bit nuts

as for Wolf bands, Wolf & Cub (local noise guys) is cool 'cause it comes from an awesome manga/movie series. and AIDS Wolf is just ace. as is Guitar Wolf

Halo of Flies (dosen't the guy from that post here?)

I'm not from the 'real' Halo of Flies. I formed my project independently and released stuff before I found out about them, and when I did, didn't see why I should change the name, as I doubt commercial success will ever be forthcoming for me. Predictably, we both got the name from the same place: the kick-ass Alice Cooper song.  It's just such a powerful little phrase, got completely stuck in my mind. (If anyone from the Minneapolis Noise Rock band also posts here, sorry guys).

Skyclads name is indeed associated with Wicca (kind of unsurprising since they're all Wiccans/other assorted pagans). The ever-obliging Martin Walkyier did in fact write a song (called, strangely 'Skyclad') about the meaning of the name on their first album, Wayward Sons of Mother Earth:

"We cannot see though clothes may maketh man they cannot give us shelter
On this mortal helter-skelter if our loyalties are torn,
Between the values we believe in and the egos we are feeding:
We stand all together naked as the day we were born.
And so cast off the lies that are our lives and find the truth within.
SKYCLAD! The veil has lifted,
SKYCLAD! Now I see through,
SKYCLAD! Your mask of illusion,
SKYCLAD! To the fake that is you."

The whole song in general is a brilliant piece of writing. SUCH A GOOD BAND.

I also like the doors.  An awsome name.
The deftones name actually got me into them, also team sleep is a cool name, it's chino's side proj.  Milk's name got me into them as well, as well as a band called Subject, wich i don't think exists anymore. Sob. I also thought Led Zepplin was a sweet name, but I couldn't listen to their music.  I just... can't.  I don't know why. My brother and I were in a band called freak flag from a jimi hendrix tune.  I was also in "House of Flies" from a deftones song, other names we bounced around:
The Chairs
N R Sleep (Get it? In our sleep, pretentious and lame at the same time!)
Spank
Che Guevara (did i spell that right?)

skyclad   -Cool name.. Also reminds me of something from a book called Northern Lights; A polar bear was clad in armour made of sky-metal, hence he was skyclad n_n
Arch Enemy - It 'feels' right.. With the A, then the E... If that makes absoultely no sense then.. well..yeh. But i do like the word Arch, so combining it with something always seems to sound nice to me.
Daft Punk, Pink Floyd - Hear the name once, and its always there.
Oasis - Just so different, not something i'd ever have thought of for a band name, but with their fame, they practically redefined the initially conidered meaning of the word.

I would have said the name Pantera but as its just spanish for panther.. It'd seem greater if it was its own word. It's always a nice-sounding word for me.

-Issei Sagawa

named after a japanese college student who killed and ate one of his classmates and managed to avoid prosecution somehow. he is now some sort of bizarre celebrity in japan, aparently.

-The Scumsluts

a local band. the name fits the music so well. they just get drunk and sound like shit and cover the occasional gg allin song. they have a song called "shootgun boos" (inside joke, mispelling of "shotgun booze") and during this song everyone in the band, and many audience members, shotgun a beer or 3. its alot of fun

also; i think The What is a cool name. if only....

People naming bands just so that they mess up flyers or for the purpose of conversations like this:

"Who are you going to see tonight?"
"Band name, like, Holy Fuck or The What or whatever else was mentioned"
"WHO/WHAT/OH FUCK"
"REPEAT"

Are pretty much my fucking pet peeve.
