R.E.M. - Why Not Smile

Definitely not the best track to be listening on a late night weekday while feelin rather depressed, but still one of R.E.M.¿s most beautiful songs of ever, probably the saddest too

the concrete broke your fall
to hear you speak of it
I'd have done anything
I would do anything
I feel like a cartoon brick wall
to hear you speak of it
you've been so sad
it makes me worry
why not smile?
you've been sad for a while.
why not smile?

I would do anything
to hear you speak of it.
why not smile?
you've been sad for a while.
you've been sad for a while.

I've been listening to the new mewithoutYou album for the last few days...soo incredibly good.  Anyone else like these guys?  Have you heard their new stuff yet?

You Am I - 'Purple Sneakers'. Classic Aussie song by a classic Aussie band thats given its name to one of our biggest local indie discos. Its the first track on a mix for my girlfriend, who i did not meet at Purple Sneakers...
fun lyrics too:
" We'll have to hide 'til no one is around
'cause there ain't no room in the city today
For explanations that you just can't say
Found out what shame can mean
In purple sneakers and grey jeans"

Now i'm onto a Ramones cover of Dylan's My Back Pages. i downloaded heaps of Ramones MP3s from a blog somewhere, and its a fun cover... and since my gal and i try to outdo each other for covers, its on the mix too

John Lennon - Working Class Hero

I love this song so much.

...did Alan Jackson do a cover of that song? 'Cause if it's the same song, I have the Alan Jackson version of it. Speaking of which:

"Midnight in Montgomery" - Alan Jackson

Same album, the song haunts the shit out of me. And one time when he was playing it live in Montgomery (I think it was Montgomery, anyway) the lights all went out. Creepy as all hell.

Moby - Go (Trentemoller Mix)

Original track was released in 1991, making it 15 years old.  Heard in a variety of places over the years.  It always reminds me of the good old days of Trance, back before Guidos killed the scene here in Toronto.  Back when I was young, and I could party till 11am, no problems.  Ah, youth.  *wistful sigh*

Current 93 – Thunder Perfect Mind

C93 is one of those bands who I’ve been aware of for years, but just recently “clicked” for me.  I got TPM a few weeks ago, after being totally blown away by Black Ships Ate the Sky earlier this year.  I’m really digging the whole thing.

This song is ridiculously good...actually, I'm going to drop it into my rotation at work RIGHT NOW.

Yes, I do like Ben Folds, now shut up about it.
I won't shut up about it, because I also heart Ben Folds.

I am about to sound horrifically out of place.  Due to its mainstream subject matter, what I am about to say will likely get me lynched, if what I've read so far is sufficiently indicative of the local tastes here:

I'm listening to the new BNL album, Barenaked Ladies Are Me.  I'm very fond of it, I even liked it on the first listen, and I rarely like anything the first time I hear it.  It's a very melodic album, much more so than previous collections, and while nothing on the disc strikes me as especially catchy (the disappointing Everything to Everyone had several extremely catchy songs, despite being an overall below average BNL album), something about it just makes it stick to me like moist stuffing.  One thing that I really love about this album is the fact that there isn't a single song on it that I genuinely don't like.  Even Stunt, which is supposed to be their best album, has one or two songs that I usually skip.

Commence lynching.

Burial's self-titled debut. I love, love, love the sounds and where he's coming from with this recording. I'm hoping the next album released by Hyperdub, Kode 9 + Spaceace's "Memories of the Future" at least matches it in the quality department.

This interview with Burial and Martin Clark (aka Blackdown) is very enlightening about the artist, for those who tried listening to this album before due to Pitchfork's high rating and guses of love, but didn't understand what was going on.

I think I'm gonna listen to some dub mixes next, then go to bed.

James Malone is quickly becoming one of my favorite individual musicians. Great guitar player with some fucking intense vocals.

In fact, I should stop listening to these guys, because I always end up thinking, 'Goddammit, it's another 3 whole weeks until their new album drops?'

Now I'm listening to Rhythm & Sound - With The Artists.

Rhythm & Sound are a German duo who started with making some of the best techno ever as Basic Channel (they even get a mention in LCD Soundsystem's Losing My Edge). Over the years though, their sound got so minimal and spaced out that what they essentially had were dub riddims. On this album they invited deejays (vocalists of the reggae/dub styles) to sing. the collection is excellent.

Killing Joke – “Majestic”

In a total 180 from the conspiratorial paranoia of KJ’s last album, Hosannas from the Basements of Hell is largely uplifting anthems.  On top of a pounding rhythm section and guitar distortion that fills every available frequency range, Jaz exhorts how the secret to happiness is hidden in plain sight:

You cannot tell the people / Though some of us have guessed it
Every day’s a blessing / I feel the best yet…

Deathmøle – “Unicorn Remains”

So obviously I’m out of the loop ‘cause I’m just hearing the Deathmøle tracks now.  I am just floored by this.  As far as two-dimensional bands go, Deathmøle kicks Gorillaz ass.

The first Gorillaz with Dan The Automator, or the second Gorillaz with Danger Mouse?

Tonight, I'm listening to the No New York compilation. My particular copy is a Russian import, as it was reissued by Universal Music Russia. This seems odd to me since most sites are claiming that the only reissue you can currently find is from Japan. It also sucks that the linear notes are completely in Russian, with no English translation. In the meantime though, the music is ridiculously awesome.

As good as both their albums are (Demon Days being the better of the two), Gorillaz have never been as fucking metal as Deathmøle is.

Since neither incarnations of the Gorillaz are metal anyway, it doesn't really matter. But S/T > Demon Days, any day.

"Thunderbird" by Even, a Melbourne band. Stright up rock 'n' roll, with a glockenspiel, and some way too happy non-word vocal stylings. Like a cross between The Dandy Warhols "The Creep Out" and "It's a Fast-Driving Rave-Up With The Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes"

Always makes me feel better when I'm in a bad mood at work.
