Elliott Smith - Between the Bars.

Somehow manages to make me feel weepy no matter how much of a good mood I'm in...
Holy shit! Muffy! Haven't seen a post from you in a while, welcome back. Happy to see you still have great musical taste, Either/Or just might be my favourite Elliott Smith record. SO hard to choose though.

It is, if Michael Jackson is the one singing it. The Alien Ant Farm version makes me want to slaughter them with the removed shards or Jacko's former nose.

"Twilight Zone/ Twilight Tone" - The Manhattan Transfer

I have to write about my favorite song for English and it's driving me crazy choosing just one.

I personally do not like The Mars Volta, but I don't see why I should give you shit about it.  Although if you want really really really good drumming, even better than that in the Mars Volta, you need to get some Don Caballero.  Damon Che is truly an octopus.

Did you download this?  I'm wondering if it's The Breeders' version miss-tagged.

To be honest, I've been listening to me recently!  Soppy shit with a friend singing & playing acoustic.  Vox-wise I hear a bit of Mark Hollis, for my part I guess soppy electronica and a couple of arrangement ideas nicked from the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack.

It may be the Breeders mistagged.  My friend just burned me a CD with 24 Pixies songs on it, but he may have put a Breeders song on there.  And yeah, he did download them.

And to the other dude who said something to me, I know there are better drummers than Jon Theodore (not many, but there are), but I just love his style.  I wonder if the band will continue with that style now that he's gone.  I listened to their early stuff with Blake Flemming, and the drumming is more straightforward.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the style Theodore brought to the band made them unique.  I mean, who could have thought of the beat for Cicatriz ESP?  Seriously.

Isis - "Oceanic."

This is one of those albums that remind me why I love music...the actual songs in and of themselves are already good, but then when you take the whole album, with the story underneath it all, it's just incredible.  I doubt this would be considered literally a "concept album," but I love the fact that the band takes the time to make a cohesive work of art, and not just a random collection of 10-12 songs....

If there's ever a need for epic drumming, go back and listen to some Cream. Ginger Baker is still by and far the finest drummer I've ever heard. Therefore:

In the land of Grey & Pink would have been a pretty good progressive album if it weren't for Love to You. What the hell were they thinking?

It is, if Michael Jackson is the one singing it. The Alien Ant Farm version makes me want to slaughter them with the removed shards or Jacko's former nose.

Why? It's a better version, as much as you can measure things. It's kind of like saying 20 kelvins is warmer than 10 kelvins, you get me? Actually, neither is quite that bad, but you get the picture.

Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows - The Goat

"There is an old goat at my window-pane,
standing upright in a frock-coat,
somewhat earth-coloured and plain.
He is starring down at me ...
and the place where i have chosen to hide ...
in the futile attempt to dissolve ...
I discovered this cell as a child.

There is a medicine-case, he calls "being",
which the goat carries under his arm.
He says, if i only allow him to enter -
I shall never come come to any harm.
He is giving quite an importance to
his frrightning and urgent concern, he says:
"I have come to be your transformer...
I'm your doctor, half goat and half man."

He says that this house will soon crumble,
and that I am going to suffer as it falls.
He says: "Let me in now and I'll be your savior...
I'm your healer ... whith hooves and horns!" "

Fucking beautiful track.

Phase Two: The Cythraul Klan's Scrutiny VIII. From Ancient Times (Starless Skies Burn to Ash) by Absu.

they have really long song titles like Bal Sagoth does but the music is quite different, and not full of long and sometimes boring keyboard interludes.
these guys are really good black/thrash. this is from 'Tara' though the stuff from 'the Sun of Tipereth' record has a more eerie atmosphere
i like this a bit better.

v/a ? Macro Dub Infection, Vol. 1

2CD compilation of dub tracks curated by Kevin Martin of Techno Animal and the Bug.  It encompasses a huge range of variations on the style, from traditional Jamacian-reggae tracks to (then-current) digital dub.  Includes tracks by Coil, Tricky, Bill Laswell, Tortoise, Luke Vibert, and a whole lot of others.

Those comps were so exciting at the time, really inspiring shit.  I went back and listened to the first one recently, still got some really good moments.  Kinda looks at dub as a virus / meme rather than as a sound...?  The Bedouin Ascent track is amazing, I reckon.  He was a weird one - writing UK techno stuff in polyrhythmic patterns and non-standard time signatures...  Something fairly confounding about making that kind of music with analogue synths and drum machines.  And that Tricky track is cool - hilarious approch to a remix, must've taken him all of 10 minutes.. that's Alison Goldfrapp on vox, by the way... I was so shocked when she went all electro-clash after doing these beautiful semi-ambient tracks with people like Tricky, Orbital and Plaid.

I've been listening a lot to a free EP by (Nick) Zammuto from The Books, remixed by randoms I've never heard of. I like it, but it's really different from The Books.  Shows off some drum'n'bass influences, even!  Free download from http://www.notype.com

Free remixes for the win. I'm listening to "Silver" by Jesu, which is now officially in the running for one of the prettiest songs ever. Does everything Justin Broadrick touches turn into ear-bound gold? I mean, listen to his remix of Pelican's "Angel Tears." It's gorgeous.

"The Twenty-Five Pounder" - Runrig

Take early Rush but send them to a Highland wedding to learn how to play that style of music on each of their respective instruments. Then add a set of bagpipes and a mandolin on top of that. Pretty soon, you are going to get this song.

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - The Curse Of Millhaven.

You must have heard about the curse of Millhaven,
How last Christmas, Bill Blakey's little boy didn't come home:
They found him the next week up in One Mile Creek,
With his head bashed in and his pockets full of stones,

From the Murder Ballads album, the song is sung from the point of view of a fourteen-year old girl named Loretta (but she prefers Lottie), who lives in Millhaven, a town plagued by a rash of murders and butchery. If you ever wanted a concrete example of the sheer macabre brilliance of Nick Cave's lyricism, this is it. A straightforward chord line that is tweaked maniacally back and forth and an eerie moaning organ underly an increasingly horrifying torrent of verses. Strongly, strongly recommended.

Its based on a Peter Straub short story. Every time i see a Peter Straub book I look for the story, but I can't find it. Perhaps the info I have is wrong.
I love that song. Its the first Nick Cave song i ever heard and its why I'm into him. Never saw him do it live though.

Found this by typing "curse millhaven straub" into google:

http://www.bad-seed.org/~cave/misc/straub.html

Heaps of info about use of specific stories in several songs, Straub and Cave's comments, etc.

And I'm listening to The Soft Pink Truth's 'Gender Studies'.  This particular track is a bit lame, I think.. chops up male R&B and hip-hop vocalists to make them say / sing things like "Take me, rape me, young girl" and "I wish I was a lady"

It's their newest release, and one of the best ones they've put out yet.  Sasha Bell's vocals are nothing short of stunning, and their song writing has this classic beauty which becomes timeless.  Make special note to check out such tracks as "Don't Know Why You Stay" or "Rue De Lis"

I had never heard this band before but when I saw the album artwork on their Pitcfork review I had to at least check a song or 2 from the album out.  I'm really enjoying it so far, it kinda reminds me Animal Collective for some reason...if Animal Collective ya know..had a rapper or something.

Faithless - One Step Too Far (feat. Dido)

The song begins slowly, with an airy synth line throbbing underneath Dido's ethereal and oh-so-slightly vocoded vocals. She crescendos, and suddenly the synth drops away into a pumping bass-line. The song vibrates and pulsates along, pulling us with it. Maxi-Jazz joins in for a verse and contributes to the chorus, and the song slowly dies away over the course of minutes. Very chilled out, very pleasant. Highly recommended if you like smooth, ambient electronica.

If the Sun or the Moon should give way to doubt,
They would immediately go out,
One swallow don't make a summer,
But tomorrow has to start somewhere...

Faithless were actually one of the bands that got me addicted to music. I went to see them last year and they kicked so much ass. I think I danced more then the people who were on Acid in that concert, somthing like 90% of the people there I believe.

Enslaved - The Sleep: Floating Diversity - A Monument Part II

Enslaved playing progressive rock from the great and somewhat avant-grade album Monumension.

"Mass Destruction" by Faithless is what turned me on to electronic-type music. It's really a stretch to relate the two, but it's got me listening to Kool Keith and his various partners and pseudonyms. I haven't got very far into any synth'd and sampled genres other than hip-hop, but I'm working on getting Geogaddi by Boards of Canada as we speak. <3 BitTorrent.

"Hole In The World" - The Eagles

All of the above having been said, I am still and always will be a total sucker for a good guitar and some amazing vocal arrangements.

Slint - Breadcrumb Trail

Don't you just love the feeling you get when you haven't listened to an amazing piece of music in a long time, and then you start it up and you can't believe you've gone so long without it?
