Since when are BDM fucked up brutal USBM? I remember them as probably the least original MDM band ever.

Joy Division - Transmission

Well, let me clarify. Compared to most of the stuff I listen to, BDM are fucked up and brutal. It's probably the heaviest band I listen to, even though they sound like child's play compared to, say Cattle Decapitation or something.

So, no they're not fucked up and brutal to someone who listens to a lot of extremely extreme metal, but to me, they are.

Also, I'm not exactly an expert on BM of any kind, and I've seen them described as alot of things but not BM, but that being said, to me, they are.

Blast beats? Check
Heaps of Tremolo guitar riffing? Check
Raspy higher pitched screams? Check

According to Wikipedia, they're Melodic Death Metal or Metalcore, but to mine ears they exhibit none or barely any of the marks of those genres, and are basically just labeled as such because they're a metal band who has emerged from Massachusetts in the past 5 years.

They're DEFINITELY not BM. Go listen to At The Gates and old Dark Tranquillity, and you'll see where BDM come from.

Ok here's a section from the BM FAQ http://www.blackmetal.co.uk/ForumsPro/viewtopic/t=3967.html (sorry its in a forum post, I read the intial thing years ago, probably the best written explanation of what BM is I've ever read, original website seems to be down now) maybe that will help explain things too you.)

Quote
Why is it called "black" metal?

All musical art is ideally the sum of its parts--inspiration, writing, and instrumentation--which all clearly reflect a certain intent (mindset, ideology, worldview, vision, whatever you'd like to call it) of the artist at work. With that in mind, black metal is designed with a single artistic purpose, a purpose that can flesh itself out in a fairly wide variety of ways: the opposition of Judeo-Christian ideology and its influences on society. Therefore, the "black" in "black metal" refers to the blasphemous, offensive, profane, or extreme ideological and musical tools that the bands utilize to make their points known. It refers to the negativity of the artform: black metal is negative art because it displays the innate tragedies of reality, the inevitability of death, or the perceived ugliness of the Christian world in a way so that the listener gains some catharsis from the music. Additionally, black metal doesn't simply blaspheme; to succeed, it must simultaneously append its own solution (i.e. black metal doesn't just attack Judeo-Christianity... it overthrows it.) Some prominent themes that can be found in black metal are: nihilism (the replacement of Christian morals,) bloody warfare and victory over Christianity, the apocalypse or Ragnarok, the rise of demonic or Satanic forces, anti-Christian paganism and heathenism, Nazism, and the occult.

Black metal is about the ideology it has nothing to do with aesthetics, which is why a huge number of bands from Burzum to Summoning to Darkthrone, despite the fact that they all sound different  are all grouped under the BM genre.

Wearing corpse paint and playing tremlo riffs does not make you a black metal band. Neither does being "Fucked up and Brutal". In general I would say that most Black metal bands are more melodic then DM bands.

"Stairway to Heaven (live)" - Led Zeppelin

It's been forever since I listened to any version of this song. But I do not care. I still want that damn 6/12 doubleneck. But I want it with 21 frets on the 6-string neck. All I ask is ONE MORE FRET, Gibson, how hard can it possibly be. Hell, I could even do it myself with an exacto and some fretwire.

The Dresden Dolls - Backstabber

The more I listen to the new cd, the less I like it compared to the self-titled one.  Maybe it's just me, but something about "Yes, Virginia" just seems...I don't know, I almost want to say lazy.  I hate being the guy that yells "Sellout!" as soon as a group moves to a bigger label, or gets better distribution, but it just seems like all of Amanda's fangs went away.  The songs, other than "Modern Moonlight" seem to be lacking something, there's just not the sense of urgency or intensity than made me fall in love with this band in the beginning.  Don't get me wrong, I still like the new cd, but it's a little disappointing compared to what I thought it would be.  Oh well, who am I to judge...

Anyway, back on topic, I am currently listening to The Shape Of Punk To Come by freakin' Refused...one of my top 10 albums, most likely...I can't think of anything I don't like about it.

Just to hop in on this topic of discussion. I really enjoyed the self titled cd but I have to agree that "Yes Virginia" does seem to be lacking something. I have been racking my brain as to what it was since I bought it, but I think you have hit the nail on the head with the lack of the sense of urgency.  The cd is still ok but I think it has several more skipable tracks then the self titled.  Example at least for me is the song "Sing". It just feels like it was put together halfassedly and is actually quite boring.

And as for what I am listening to: Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer "Crazy=Cute", sometimes a 2 minute poppy song makes the work day go faster.

Seriously, I'm not a huge fan of Worship Him or Blood Ritual, they sound boring and unispired to me, listenable but not top tier stuff. Lyrics don't even bare mentioning. Ceremony of Opposites is good probably their third best album I'd say.

When I first heard Passage I was absolutely blown away, it's fucking amazing, the atmosphere, the sound, the lyrics the band just went to a completely different level. People can bitch about the programmed drums all they like but I think they fit the sound perfectly.

Eternal is basically the next step along, has some amazing songs,

the wind of spring blows in heaven
in the land of gold in the land of god
manipulate the holiness
maculate our loneliness
shining between two worlds
learning to win and hold
fraction of monopoly
tension of opposite's pole
give or take what has to move
for I will fight for my country
Eldest to the one and I
harvest of love and light
armless - amnesty

North south east and west the cross is sent over the lands
keep draining what was and will be in our time in our life
pilot soul takes you on the ride, no rise no fall for Humankind

Among the best survive or leave
paranoid night so hard to relieve
would you betray innovation
in the name of tradition
hopeless - amnesia

North south east and west the cross is sent over the lands
keep draining what was and will be in our time in our life
pilot soul takes you on the ride, no rise no fall for Humankind

Helvetia gloria still smile behind the shade of shame
cross your faith, join your hands tomorrow holds another day
Eldest to the one and I
harvest of love and light
dictated by war and hate
supported by those who hide
it lives in your mind
whatever you may say
whoever you may pray
Christianity worldwide

Look at those lyrics, there amazing, Vorphs writing is about 100* better then Blood ritual. The whole package, the atmosphere everything it just all came together incredibly well on this album. I seriously can't wrap my head around why people can't get into there newer stuff.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Wearing corpse paint and playing tremlo riffs does not make you a black metal band. Neither does being "Fucked up and Brutal". In general I would say that most Black metal bands are more melodic then DM bands.

Didn't notice this, but I quite agree. I've always considered one of the main differences to be the emphasis of the music: Black Metal tends to concentrate on the 'atmospheric' sections of the band: the vocals, the lead guitar work, building often quite simple but aesthetically profound riff patterns, and in some cases the keys/folk instruments/acoustic guitar/whatever. Death metal, I find, is more grounded in the rhythm section. Wicked-ass bass grooves and machine-gun tight drum patterns are what really bring me to death metal. Not to say that BM bands can't have amazing rhythm sections, but still, listen to the drumming in, say, Decapitated or Behemoth to see what I mean.

The man died much too young.  He will be missed... and to think, it was almost Eric Clapton in the helicopter instead of him.
The music is some seriously good stuff.  Excellent lead guitar by Mr Vaughan himself, and his band supplies some pretty good rhythm-type stuff.  Definitely worth a listen.

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife. The singer's got a bit of a whiny voice but the melodies are pretty cool.

Jawbox - 68

I honestly have no idea why this song only managed to appear in their Peel Sessions, it's amazing.

Xasthur- Subliminal Genocide

Easily the most depressive BM record I've ever heard.  It's just so uncompromisingly bleak... I'm not sure whether I'm more amazed or horrified.

Swedish Wolfmother

This a serious slight on Dungen. I mean, I really like Wolfmother, but Dungen are so much more than what Wolfmother are doing. True, they are both very retro rock acts with heavy Purple and Sabbath influence, but Dungen has so many more interesting elements to their sound, Swedish folk, jazz fusion, symphonic prog.

Battle Of Mice-A Day of Nights.

I bought this on a whim due to hearing Sleep and Dream on a sampler cd somewhere and it's amazing. It would be perfect chillout music if the vocalist wasn't so damn scary.

Am waiting for the new Kylesa album to arrive. If the postman does not arrive with it soon I will unleash my cats on him.
