Battle Of Mice-A Day of Nights.

I bought this on a whim due to hearing Sleep and Dream on a sampler cd somewhere and it's amazing. It would be perfect chillout music if the vocalist wasn't so damn scary.

Am waiting for the new Kylesa album to arrive. If the postman does not arrive with it soon I will unleash my cats on him.

A Day Of Nights is quite the scary cd...you might also want to check out the vocalist's other band, Made Out Of Babies...I downloaded them both after seeing the write-up they both got in Decibel a couple months back, and after hearing them I felt compelled to purchase them both.

Modern Giant - The Band's Broken Up. Local Sydney band sings/talks about going to shows ('Midnight Oil, The Hummingbirds, The Clash'), local venues, trying to get laid, and 'Buzzcocks shirts and bourbon', and though i'm younger then the band i like both those things

its one of those silly little songs you hear late at night and really connect to... and it inspired me to get into the Hummingbirds, who are worth it

Eels - Not Ready Yet

wee Eels
I was in the record store with my friend today and made him buy Beautiful Freak. It was 12 dollars and had a wad of cash on him. It made me quite content.

Weakerthans - Aside (my all time, number one favourite Weakerthans song. It's really poppy and oddly optimistic and makes me smile tonnes.)  My three favourite lyrics from that line, in no particular order:

I'm unconsoled, I'm lonely.
I am so much better than I used to be.

Rely a bit to heavily on alcohol and irony.
Get clobbered on by courtesy, in love with love, and lousy poetry.

And I'm leaning on this broken fence between Past and Present tense.
And I'm losing all those stupid games that I swore I'd never play.
But it almost feels okay.

SUCH a great song :)

Acid Bath - New Corpse

Currently on a little Acid Bath binge. The fact that it played this right after Dead Girl is why I have so much trouble explaining to people what Acid Bath sound like. This is fucking industrial metal, complete with samples and processed vocals, that was a full-acoustic bluesy ballad. And now it's switched to the Sabbath-esque brilliance of Paegan Love Song. Perhaps the best description, given their sum of influences and styles, might be 'everything nu-metal could have been had anyone with an ounce of talent or originality been involved at any stage whatsoever'.

But they are not nu-metal whatsoever.

Oh no.

BUT FUCK ARE THEY SO GOOD.

Earth - Of This Spell

Not the drone band Earth, but a really good Australian metal band.

Hard to describe the sound, I guess you would call them melodic death/thrash with Keyboards. Saw them live on Saturday night and they were quite good, suprisingly brutal.

The Bronx - ST.  I think this was a rather underrated album this year.  I still prefer their "White Drugs" debut for its rawness, and for just having a higher level of energy, but this one is great as well.  They remind me quite a bit of what I loved about Every Time I Die when "Hot Damn!" came out; just a thick layer of sneering, pissed off, sarcastic punk rock styled hardcore.

I disagree...kind of.  I was never all that impressed with their early stuff, but there's something about Shape Of Punk To Come that just blew me away when I first heard it, and I still consider it one of my top albums.  I've listened to the rereleases of their earlier material and my general reaction has been "meh" but that Shape Of Punk.. release was, in my opinion, amazing.

As for my listening habits, it's back to the standards; I've been listening to "Jane Doe" a lot lately.  Still my favorite album period.

Skyclad - Postcard From Planet Earth

"Now with hindsight I admit,
I don't admire the humans lot,
Frail bodies, fragile, ill-equipped.
Their lives are hard, but they are not.

Planet Earth: It's great to visit
It's great to visit,
But you wouldn't want to live there

And when you know the ways of men,
Then you can only pity them,
Every day a raging storm,
Cast away in a carbon-based life form.

Planet Earth: It's great to visit
It's great to visit,
But you wouldn't want to live there"

Written from the perspective of an alien marooned hopelessly on earth. Just a great concept, and a damn powerful song.

I dunno I've sort of heard Shape of Punk To Come that many times it's lost its charm. Seriously all through year 11 and 12 this was pretty much the only album I heard when I rode in my friends car (which was quite often). It was either this album of Bad Religon's "Generator". I swear he only had two cd's or something    It's still a good album for all the memories it gives me, especially track 4, 'Summer holidays vs Punk routine'.  It has that insanely catchy riff running through it.

Currently Playing:

Strapping Young Lad - No Sleep Till Bedtime (live album)

Another record I listened to a lot in High school, I must be feeling Nostalgic this week...

I dunno.  I read your blog, and I still think they're pushing a racist agenda.  You mentioned that nobody would use the term "bigot" as a positive moniker, but I disagree.  I saw a Klan rally once and the leader got up and went "I hate spics, Jews, Asians, and any other kind of foreigner!  I don't have a to have a reason; I just hate 'em 'cause they're there!"  People like that know they're being unreasonable, but they don't care.  Plus, the album title "Incorrigible Bigotry" is certainly an attention grabber.

Listener - Ozark Empire.  It's a hip-hop style concept album by this guy, about a corporate whore who loses his job, becomes a traveling knife salesman to make money, ends up cheating on his wife, and in the end gets killed by one of his own knives (irony?)  As far as storyline goes, it's very similar to Pedro The Lion's "Control" album, but not quite as cynical.  Musically, it's pretty lo-fi, very underground as far as production goes.  It's not really straight hip-hop, more free verse spoken word set to beats, but very interesting.

I saw this guy perfom last December, and was pretty impressed.  I'd say he's worth checking out.

Yeah it has me perpelexed as well. Sometimes I almost think they are pushing an anti-racist agenda like when they sing

"The European taste for sugar cane
Tobacco in thick
Precious leafy fronds
Amenities not found in colder climates
Are sought

Above the steaming jungle
Lies snowy heights of horror
Foundations of empire are laid
On sweating backs of nigger slaves"

It's almost as if they are protesting the explotation of slaves

and then in the same song they sing

"Rampant prognathism
Reduced cranial girth
Dark children led away
Evidence of the rape
In chains"

Plus they share drummers with Grand Belial's Key and I'm pretty sure GBK are neo nationalists or whatever the word for white supremacists are.

The thing that gets me is that all their songs are in character, and that they're on fucking Drakkar. I'm not saying Arghoslent aren't complete misanthropes, and probably rather right wing, but they just don't ping on the Nazidar.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets. i found this at the thrift store. Amazing lyrics... saying what i'm feeling now, and triumphant after the Democrats won the election, i guess. he's amazing live, as per the punk comic people often link to

I like the new MCR single.

The Hummingbirds - Blush. amazingly obscure and amazing Sydney guitar pop band. found their album LoveBUZZ at a thrift store for cheap... so worth tracking down
