I Will Be- Avril Lavigne

The writing isn't great, but I don't expect that from her.  What I expect is a beautiful voice and this song delivers.  I love ballads, particularly Avril ballads.  They say the record company wanted her to sing Celine Dion-esque ballads for her first album.  I would have loved that.

last couple of albums:

Radio LXMBRG - Trivial Matters
Confusingly, I think these guys are actually from Sweden. Cool CD though, very 80s.

Raindancer - Response
This lot are pure cheese, really dodgy synthpop, but just short enough of embarrassing to be really enjoyable. This one (brand new release) sounds a lot more coherent and consistent than their previous effort, which was already great.

I've meant to pick up some Elliott Smith music for quite a while (like since XO came out), but always kind of forgot.  In the last few weeks I've gotten XO and From a Basement on a Hill.  I'm currently listening to and enjoying both of those.  Wondering why I waited so fecking long to get them.  Perhaps to avoid looking trendy  :police:

Radio LXMBRG

That makes me homesick.

"Mexico" - Cake

I honestly think this is better than the (entirely different) James Taylor song by the same name. Isn't it funny, though, how songs about Mexico are ALWAYS AWESOME?

Heh :) gonna chuck a link to it in ze Sendspace thread if you wanna have a gander. It's a great CD. Bit cheese in places but then so is 90% of what I listen to.

Got it on again, first track "How Do You Think I Spend My Time" now playing. Takes awhile to pick up this one, but from track 2 onwards it's a beast.

Oh, I was just referring to the name. LXMBRG = Luxembourg = where I lived two years ago. I will definitely check it out if you listen to it that much, though.

"Pins And Needles" - Billy Talent

Should these guys be considered a guilty pleasure? I feel guilty enjoying this song 'cause most of their other stuff is just SO WHINY.

Amusingly, incubus's 'Mexico' is also not too shabby.

IF ONLY WE HAD KNOWN

we could have named every song ever 'mexico' and then there would be no bad music in the world.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band [and Manfred Mann Chapter 3] -> Odds and Sods: Mis-takes and Out-takes -> Turn you away from my door

Chapter 3 was not a very successful group; they made two albums before folding; this is one piece from an unreleased album. It is an incredibly awesome and rollicking song. If all of their songs had this air to them (there's even a guitar solo in here, which I thought they swore off) they could have gone somewhere, just like the other two Mann/Hugg groups (the ones that respectively had Do Wah Diddy Diddy and Just Like a Woman).

I picked up the new Band of Horses album Cease to Begin yesterday.  Its not as good as Everything All The Time but there are some really good songs on there. It is good enough that I am seriously considering skipping class and driving the hour and a half to see them in Northampton in Nov.

I love this guy so much, but I seriously wish it hadn't taken his death and subsequent biographical film release for him to gain a resurgence in popularity. I'm glad people don't give me strange looks anymore when I say I listen to him, but I'm really pissed about THAT part of it and always will be.

My little sisters well into Muse. The only song of there's I've heard I thought was any good is 'Knights of Cydonia', probably because it's such a big Ennio Morricone rip-off.

I dunno though, I can have pauline moments with bands like this. I used to think Placebo were complete shit, and now I have all their singles.

Currently listening to Suicide Commando - Mordfabrik

and, wait, it's switched

Inkubus Sukkubus - Midnight Queen

God, this band is so good. But I can't really work out why! They should be so laughable, but they're not. I think it's probably the religious thing. Once a teenage wiccan, always a teenage wiccan.

Yasushi Ishii - Musical Play Smiling Rebellious Flower

I cannot understand why Yashushi Ishii seems literally to have just written one soundtrack, and then done almost nothing else, apart from a few appearances on compilations and whatnot. I suspect he might be a session musician by day. The way this turns from a happy happy joy joy fuzzy rock song into the funeral march is just so fucking cool.

I just got Iron & Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days, and I am just flipping over Sam's voice!  I had no idea it was this clear and pure...amazing.  I finished the album and then just started playing it again, and I don't really do that often.  I feel a need to get The Shepherd's Dog now...also I hear that The Creek Drank The Cradle is more akin to Numbered Days, except less polished.  anybody have any helpful comments to add?
Thanks
