Ok, so I'm a huge fan of HammerFall, DragonForce, Sonata Arctica, Demons & Wizards and Luca Turilli and I'm looking for more. What would you guys recommend?

kharbevnor, why don't you start charging people for your services?
you could get business cards printed out saying 'metal consultant' or something.

see, i'm channeling the backwards thread with this one.

Yeah, I figured I could have asked him specifically, but I decided not to in the end.

Power metal recommendation, eh? Don't.

If your into Demons and Wizards I take it your already into Blind Guardian and Iced Earth? Same with Luca and Rhapsody. Really, nothing beats Rhapsody for cheese.

Some other good bands based on what you mentioned might be Domine (Emperor of the Black Runes is a fantastic album), Helloween, Angra, Wuthering Heights, Dream Evil, Gamma Ray, Tad Morose, 3 Inches of Blood, Iron Saviour and of course, the mighty NINJA MAGIC!

Awesome, thanks Kar.

As far as Luca and Rhapsody, I'm not really a big fan of the latter. I dunno, maybe I haven't given them enough time.

Evergrey maybe? They're kinda prog/power, but they are very good, and a bit less silly than most power metal.

Heh, I actually have all of Manowar's studio albums. I don't like all their work, though, usually just a few songs per album.

Iced Earth isn't really power metal, but they are awesome.

And also, Kamelot.

Yeah, but he should be familiar with them if he likes Demons and Wizards.

I've got some of their music, yeah. Some of my friends are huge Iced Earth fans, so they got me into them. Sort of into them, at least.

I haven't really listen to Power metal for a few years but here's the Essential Power Metal albums for me:

Accept - Restless and Wild

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (Dio = \m/)

Helloween - Walls of Jericho (One of the greatest power/speed metal albums ever) /  Keeper of the Seven Key's parts I and II

Scanner - Hypertrace

Running Wild - Under Jolly Rodger (pirates and speed metal huzzah)

Blind Gaurdian - Battalions of Fear / Follow the Blind / Somewhere Far Beyond

Nightwish - Oceanborn (female vocalist)

Gamma Ray - Somewhere out in Space / Powerplant

Hammerfall - Renegade

Heavenly - Dust to Dust

Angel Dust - Bleed / Enlighten the Darkness

Sonata Arctica?  Well, you could always try Finland's other power metal icon, Stratovarius.  Or Nightwish, if you want to call them power metal and not symphonic metal.

There's a German band, Freedom Call, I've seen 'em live and they're good.

And yes, give Kamelot a listen.

Edguy
Advantasia

advantasia is ridiculous, they have the singer from edguy, ronny james dio, a guy or two from helloween and a few other big names too. its awesome.

and edguy is just pure badass.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

That guy from Blind Guardian and Demons & Wizards has got to be one of the greatest heavy metal singers I have ever heard.

Eh, it's already been mentioned but I say you gotta check out Kamelot. I own three of their albums (Karma, Epica and The Black Halo, I couldn't find the others) and listening to those generally gives me goosebumps from how awesome it is.

Hammerfall - Renegade

This is one of my favourite albums period.

I dunno if Nevermore counts as power metal, but I <3 them a lot. This Godless Endeavor was my favorite album of 2005.

Kamelot are touring in September with Epica, whose singer guest sang on The Black Halo (but not on Epica, which would've made for great fun confusion!).  For those who might like to see them live before getting a cd, or just want to see them live.  And didn't know.

Or like me, want to see Epica live again and don't mind driving from Minneapolis to Chicago to do it...

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I see your Abigail, and, against accepted wisdom, I raise you The House of God.

and The Graveyard.

Both of which, to my mind, at least equal Abigail.

I don't know if Nevermore and King Diamond count as power metal, good stuff though, especially Nevermore, if you love "This Godless Endeavor" check out their earlier stuff, "Dreaming Neon Black" and "Dead Heart in a Dead World" are excellent.

As for King Diamond all I can say is "Mother's getting weakeeeeeeeerrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!"

"Them" and "Conspiracy" are excellent albums, very creepy. Andy Laroque is highly under-reated as a guitarist.
