What kind of drawing?

At work at the moment I'm using a program called http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/">Paint.NET.  It's kind of like a step between MS Paint and Photoshop, and it's free.

You could also use the http://www.gimp.org">Gimp, but I have some problems with its UI (ie: I think it's goddamn ugly and clunky).

They are both free, so check those out before you go buying something you may not need.  If you actually want to start drawing properly and want a dedicated app then maybe these aren't for you (especially in the long run), but maybe they'll do for now.

I'll second The Gimp. It might have a bit of a clunky interface (not that bad anymore though) but it is quite powerful.

I'll second ArtRage, 'specially if you have a tablet. Very awesome piece of software.

great!  those all look like great alternatives. i'll try them out.  hopefully with some practice with these programs i'll be able to post some work on here!

i'll be working on a wacom tablet and an iMac G5, just if you're curious.

Because I didn't know you're on a Mac, I'd like to take this opportunity to second Seashore as well, although you probably won't be able to take full advantage of your tablet using it.

I love OpenCanvas and the version 1.1b or so is free.

Spending money though not sure.  I have full CS2 suite, corel draw, and alias sketchbook.  I think out of all of those sketchbook is prolly cheapest, but i haven't really toiled with it much since i mainly stay within opencanvas, ps, and draw.
