question about putting studs on a jacket
« on: 23 Jun 2006, 14:44 »

ok, I've got a jacket I wanna punk out

and I wanna put studs all over it (mainly the cuffs and whatever else i can think of if i have some leftover)

my question is, what's an easy way to set them so they come out nice and straight?

Maybe try using a ruler and pen to draw a straight line on the jacket and then just follow it where you wanna put the studs? I dunno how well that would work.

Like coreh said. Line on jacket, place studs on line. If it's not straight, take it out.

That NERV patch is pretty cool.

I just do it by eye, or along seams, because my coats too busy, but that's a good idea.

use dress making pins, that way you can move it easily and won't leave a mark like pen. Measure up from the nearest hem then pin, keep doing that until they're everywhere you want them.

That, or if you're wanting to mark things, dressmaker's chalk is really useful.

Bend the hooks inward? I assume we're talking about spikes here?
They should stay on if you bend the hooks inward once you push them through your clothing.
I've got an old broken spike belt that needs destudding so I can put them on my jacket.

make sure you hammer the backs well. the studs have to be bent inwards and just make sure they stay bent. i had to rehammer some studs on a belt once because they kept snagging and unbending. but becareful not to break the studs.

...ok...yes, i knew that, its common sense. but either way some tend to still fall off, and not because the prongs unbend, they come off and theyre still bent inward.

no, its almost like the prongs arent long enough or somthing, the larger cone studs never seem to have this problem.

then the cloth is too thick or something. and i don't think you can sew them on. i've never really had that problem. the only time studs over popped off of anything was from either snagging or the cloth just being old and worn.

why would you want the studs on straight? doing things symmetrically and making it look nice is for hippies and wimps.
shotgun three beers then just start going. its not supposed to look nice and neat. its supposed to look gnarly.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Use chalk to mark out the pattern on the fabric, then follow that. It'll come off with a damp rag.

totally punk rawk!

i've found that the best way is to just do one guiding line with chalk and line the rest of the studs up against each other so that they fit well together, so even if you fuck up your line, at least they'll look well put together.  but that's not very punk rock.  if your a TRU PUNK!!!  you'll down a 40 while listening to a global threat or anal cunt and do it while sitting in a gutter yelling obscenities at the cops.  if you're not a poseur.

as for keeping them on, the best way really is to make sure the prongs are bent inwards.  you can always apply a bit of hot glue, but that can get uncomfortable if the glue mounds and it will feel like you're wearing the studs on the inside of your jacket.

final summation:  sniff glue out of bags.

I do hope you're planning on spelling out "VERY METAL" with the studs.
