Metalcore = Hardcore metal?
« on: 17 Aug 2006, 09:21 »

I've been a bit confused on this for a time now.  Is hardcore metal an offshoot of extreme metal or is the term used interchangeably with metalcore?

I've never heard of hardcore metal. What bands are being referred to as that?

However, if they don't sound anything like bands like Converge, Acme, Stand, Fall Silent and the like then they aren't metalcore.

Hardcore metal is, I believe, normally a term used by idiots to describe extreme metal. Either that, or it may just be a term some people use to describe crossover Thrash, which is a melding of metal and hardcore quite different to what is normally classified as 'metalcore'.

it was really a singular interjection, I didn't plan on starting any fucking shit.

I just get frustrated when people jump at me when I accidently call an extreme metal band hardcore or something.

A good way to describe metalcore is to think of it as death metal with some high pitched screams and breakdowns.

Well, there is quite a difference.

People would be annoyed if you called the Beatles a blues band.

that's correct.

metalcore is that really lame hardcore where the riffs sound just a LITTLE too complicated for the vocals, and it ALWAYS sounds horrible.

metalcore has nothing to do with tight pants wearing, jet black hair having, black (or any color at all) eyeliner wearing fag music that is good enough for my dog to shit on.

seriously, check out all else failed, or harvest, or shai hulud. or fall river.

Hang on, surely hardcore metal makes no sense, isn't hardcore a crossover of metal and punk?

No, it isn't. Hardcore basically starting with people taking punk and making it harder and faster. That's a massive simplification but you get the idea. The two have borrowed a lot from each other over the years to the point where it can be hard to tell the difference with some of the subgenres but they're still mostly pretty distinct.

I have noticed that plenty of hardcore bands have metal tendencies (i.e. Rise Against, guitar harmonies) without sounding anything like...I dunno, Metallica.

what is "fag music"?

also, what does the "x" in the middle of your name represent sir?
fag music. you know. norma jean. underoath. bullet for my valentine. shit like that.

as for the x, it represents the 24th letter in the alphabet. oh, and to separate two words, instead of having to use an underscore. that's about it.

Never thought I would stand up for the Emo genre, but Norma Jean uses more polyrythems then most bands out there.  I can't accept your grouping them in with UnderOath.  In the end, it is your personal opinion.  But Calling it "Fag Music" is harsh.

Actually, calling any music fag music is, well...gay.

Unless you're talking about something like Coil or Death in June. You know, music made by gay people which is often about or at least mentions being gay.

Otherwise, you're going to end up sounding like you have a room temperature IQ and drive a pick-up.

I think metalcore and hardcore metal would be two different things... never did think about it before.

Great call on Fall River.  I found out about them through a xsisterhoodx.com article their vocalist wrote about women in [aggressive music].  It was pretty well done, so I checked em out.

at best, norma jean is a Botch rip-off. botch did the polyrhythms thing a lot better.

their vocalist is a girl, so that maybe explains that last part a little bit.

Agree that Norma Jean is just a blatent Botch rip-off...but before that horrendous "O God The Aftermath" album, they were only a slight rip-off of Coalesce, and they did the chaos thing pretty well...gotta give them credit for that.

When you guys say hardcore, I assume you are refering to some kinda offshoot of rock?  Because when I hear it, I think of the EDM hardcore... which is like happy hardcore, but without the happy.  Though there is also hardcore techno, which isnt hardcore... because its techno.  Or so I'm told.  The difference means little to me.

I'm just saying that hardcore can mean many things.  And by rock, I mean the big general genre that includes everything from the beatles to Nirvana.  I get all confused by the sub-genres of rock.

When most people say hardcore, they think of bands like Minor Threat, Bane, Cro-Mags, Bad Brains, Cross Examination.  I have never heard of happy hardcore.

Metalcore is obviously a merger of hardcore and metal that is different from crossover thrash.  Metalcore can basically consist of two different things.  There are bands like Integrity and Converge who choose to use metal riffs with hardcore rhythms and vocals, and there are bands like It Dies Today and other Trustkill/newer Victory bands that do it as a way to have an instant fanbase without having to be different or sincere in any way.

Edit:  I didn't realise this thread was older and wasn't sure if the discussion was still going on.  Apologize for bumping a bad thread.

I just want to make one more comment before we let this die.  I think maybe I heard it referring to brands of sludge metal with obvious hardcore influences like Mastodon.

Never heard of happy hardcore?   Wow.  ummm... here:

Also, here: http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html

Note that lots of peeps don't agree with isktur's guide, but it serves as a good rule of thumb.

I'm pretty sure that anyone on a message board like this, when discussing hardcore, is not talking about any form of dance music or otherwise.

Also, 7 Angels 7 Plagues and End This Day (and to a lesser extent, early Dead to Fall) pretty much founded the midwest metalcore scene, in my opinion.
