I've known about The Pixies for a while now, but just recently have actually heard them, and decided to buy one of thier albums. Which would be a good one to start out with?

I actually got Death to the Pixies first (their greatest hits album) and thought it was a real good intro.  It's got a greatest hits part and a live CD.

That's what I did, too. Doolittle's their most popular album, but I think that diehard Pixie fans prefer Surfer Rosa. All of their albums are good though.

I tend to like to chronologically. While it's much noisier than their later stuff, I'd go with Come on Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa. Come on Pilgrim was their first EP, and Surfer Rosa their debut LP. I think you can get these on the same disc, which is what I would do. If you're feeling like you want something slightly more melodic, go with Doolittle, which is probably their best album, and certainly their most influential

Come on Pilgrim is the best if you ask me, but it's less than twenty minutes (not that their full lengths were very long either), so if you get it I'd recommend getting it with another album (or that Come on Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa disk which I've heard of, but I think that might be only in Japan or something).

For the albums, Surfer Rosa or Doolittle would probably be the best intro. Surfer Rosa used to be my favorite, but lately I've been more into Bossanova. Basically, if you want harder-rocking stuff, go for Surfer Rosa, if you want poppier and more varied songs, go for Doolittle, and if you want more atmospheric songs, go for Bossanova. But you can't really go wrong.

As far as accessibility goes, I'd have to say Trompe Le Monde.  U-Mass and Planet of Sound are probably (except for Here Comes Your Man) their most instantly likeable songs.

Death to the Pixies is great, but when I first heard it I definitely wasn't a Pixies fan yet, and the live stuff sounded like crap to me.

Doolittle. You won't regret it.
Surfer Rosa.
Bossanova.

Also: I opened the Music Forum page and saw the the top two threads were names of two of my favourite bands. This is starting off to be a good day.

She was never exactly thin anyway, and her voice is incredible.  The version of In Heaven that she sang on ACL gives me goosebumps.

Haha. Awesome.

I'm going to go see loudQUIETloud: A film about the Pixies very soon at this year's international film festival. I think it'll be very interesting seeing how the band dynamics within the reformed Pixies work. Also, yes, they did get fat, and in some cases balder, but they are the Pixies, y'know?

And also also, Kim Deal's voice is amazing. You can tell the woman has smoked a lot of cigarettes in her time, but it actually suits her well, all crackly and sweet and husky.

I don't think a Pixies best-of is really necessary. There are very few bad tracks on the albums themselves, and there aren't that many albums either. But I'm probably going to find a copy of Death to the Pixies any way, just for the live material. The BBC sessions CD actually wouldn't be a bad intro either; it's not exactly a greatest-hits CD, but there isn't a bad track on it and it spans their entire career. Also, it's the only album (aside from the DVD) that has their cover of Wild Honey Pie.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I'm glad, because I was going to weigh in with "Surfer Rosa was my starting point and really it's a good one." Although what you ought to do now is go track down Wave Of Mutilation and get the single version of "Gigantic" from that, because it's way more fun than the regular album version.

I really want to hear that. The re-done version of River Euphrates is excellent. Why couldn't they have included it on the B-Sides compilation/a Surfer Rosa reissue? Can you get that track alone on one of those download stores?

The BBC sessions are kind of unneccessary, except for one track: their cover of the Beatles' "Wild Honey Pie". That cover is too awesome for words.

I don't agree, not only are they all fine tracks played in a more than fine fashion, but the versions of There Goes My Gun and Is She Weird? are far better than the album versions, the latter particularily spunds incredible and is one of my favourite Pixies tracks. Wild Honey Pie is awesome as you said too.

Aside from that, take  tommy's advice.

Agreed about Is She Weird?. I don't like the album version at all, but I love the BBC version. Generally the versions are better than on the albums. I also prefer the version of In Heaven to the B-side by far, especially the different ending, but I also heard the BBC version first, so I could be biased. The fast version of There Goes My Gun is excellent, but to my surprise it didn't ruin the album version for me. The album version just has a different atmosphere to it.

the only thing i really have to add to this discussion is that when i FINALLY got to see Pixies live they bookended their set with the fast and slow versions of "Wave of Mutilation" which is tied among 8 others for my favorite song of theirs.

I regret not bringing a second pair of pants to that concert.

comfort eagle, you are blessed for owning that album first.

in all seriousness that album is exactly how music should be recorded.
put yourself exactly between two speakers or listen to it with very loud headphones to appreciate the nuances of albini's engineering. notice how the band sounds like it is playing live in your room. notice how the guitars leap out of the speakers thanks to his use of metal plectrums and dry recording environments.

Frank recorded his "Hey" parts in a wardrobe.
How good is that!?

"Hey" is on Doolittle though. Surfer Rosa's recording (by the great Steve Albni) is indeed kickass, the seconds that precede the chorus in Gigantic sound incredible, Tommy's other suggestion of The Breeder's POD is also very good, Metal Man may be the best recorded song ever.
