I've listened to couple of  their covers. I've never really had any desire to listen to the rest. Their song titles are funny. I didn't know I was trying to make people think that I had, since anyone who has heard of the band knows the recomendation was a joke.

I was also parodying the fact that the name gets dropped ironically on every indie recomendation thread and doesn't really make sense in a metal request thread.

I think it would have been funnier if you didn't try to explain why you recommended Anal Cunt.

Maybe we need a new recommendations joke, guys. Or maybe we just need to, you know, kick it up a notch

I'm just going to start recommending Journey to everyone.

*Everyone gathers round into a circle*
FIGHT! FIGHT!

*I bust in*
Now now, spgphil was asking for metal bands jcknbl gave him one and even added a little "wait.. wat?" to show the humor behind it. And he has listened to a few of their "songs" so there's no reason to question eachothers credentials being of phallic shape. Let's all just listen to a little Don't Stop Believing by Journey and have a few good laughs at the 80's expense. I mean, GLAM ROCK? What the hell was that!? Hahahaha!...... Right?

Judging by your tastes, I would second Cathedral, and also suggest (at this stage):

Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics/When the Kite String Pops
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus/Nightfall
Orange Goblin - Frequencies From Planet Ten/The Big Black
Paradise Lost - Gothic

Start there, and report back. I've gotta be off pretty soon, but I'll slap down a more comprehensive and broadening list later, maybe.

Based on the bands you like here's my list of recommendations:

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Iced Earth
Behemoth - Satanica (don't get any of their later stuff)
Bathory (highly recommended to anyone)
Ulver

No, no and NO!

Anyway: Opeth is an obvious choice.

Also check out: Emperor (!!), Death ("Symbolic" is a good start) and maybe Neurosis, if you want some doomy stuff.

What's wrong with CoF? Their earlier stuff is amazing.

And i second Emperor.

The guitarist from the Sword wore a shirt for Hammers of Misfortune, which just put out the new album The Locust Years, which is absolutely amazing (though more in the style of freaky rock opera-esque sort of thing, they experiment a lot).
Try out:
Opeth, Katatonia, In Flames (older stuff), Immortal.  To branch out a little, that is.
You might like some of the 'metalcore' people; As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, Haste the Day, Bleeding Through, Shadows Fall, Zao, etc. (people like to go "uurghh hurr you're retarded" when I bring them up, but it can't hurt to say maybe).
Power metal is tasty; 3 Inches of Blood, Kamelot (they're incredible), Dragonforce, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, etc.

As are Wikipedia and Last.fm.  Pandora not so much.

I've really been digging Pelican since I checked out their album Australasia.  Sludge with post-rock influences.  I also second the Agalloch.

I vote that Crotchduster replaces Anal Cunt as the standing recommendation joke.

I wish I was the first to chime "Opeth!"

But anyway, I cannot think of a better choice. It might be hard to find, but a great album to start out on is "Still Life". If you can't find that, try "Blackwater Park", it will most likely be in stock anywhere you go. thoguh if you get that one, try HARD to get the Deluxe Edition.

 Other Opeth Albums

 My Arms, Your Hearse
 Orchid
 Deliverance
 Damnation
 Ghost Reveries

Slumber, Bloodbath, Fintroll, Therion, and Theatre Of Tragedy are some of my other favorite metal bands.

I, for one, welcome our Anal Cunt overlords...

okay, I'm gonna second ZAO, because they've always been a favorite of mine - they're the first 'heavy' band i ever got into.  Here's some other recommendations...

C.ur1 Up And Die (had to write the first word funky, because for some reason , these phpBB style boards freak out over that word)

Isis
Neurosis
Cursed
City Of Catarpillar
Coalesce
Pg. 99
Beecher (their first album 'Breaking The Fourth Wall')
Narcissus
Orchid (the band, not the Opeth album)
Mastodon

I could go on, and on, and on...but I think I'll stop here for now.  Let someone else talk a while.  I know WAY more about this side of music than I do about indie-rock, so these threads usually make me all kinds of happy

edit:  MAKE SURE you check out Doomriders!

Sounds like you're after some doom. Based on what you listed, you'll probably like these albums.

Anathema - Serenades
Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes
Katatonia - Dance of December Souls
Sentenced - North From Here
Paradise Lost - Shades of God

I dunno which Gorgoroth albums you have (Pentegram is my fave) but since you listed you like them, I'll reccomend a few BM albums as well.

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon
Abyssic Hate - Suicidal Emotions
Nargaroth - Herbstelyd
Samael - Worship Him
Behemoth - ...And the Forests Dream Eternally
Ulver - Bergtatt

Oh and as others have mentioned be sure to check out Opeth, Morningrise is  damn amazing, I still listen to it all the time.

i was reallys surprised...
at first i assumed that it was going to be all like The Sound of Animals Fighting collided head on with Slayer and fused into one being.

but instead it sounded a lot like punk... O.o

honestly. i'll listen to anything but country and rap and/or combinations of the two.  and like, pop stuff.  actually scratch that, i'll listen to anything that has to do with Rock.  or an acoustic guitar or piano.  or both.  but that doesn't necissarily mean i'll like it.

oh Slayer is some good metal i think.  uhmm...i'm gonna go by what my friend tells me: (death metal) Cannibal Corps(sp?), Lamb of God, Dekapitated(sp?), Slayer, Mastadon...umm...yeah i don't really pay attention when he rambles about metal.

Despite my complete lack of conventional metal knowledge I'm going to second Orange Goblin's "Frequencies from Planet Ten" because even people whose metal collections otherwise contain three Sabbath albums and a burnt Darkthrone CD think it is a good*.

*This isn't my collection. I also have a burnt Discordance Axis CD, a Sleep CD I never listen to, and a bunch of droning-bullshit like Sunn 0)), Skullflower and Black Boned Angel, so nah!

Slayer and Lamb of God are not good metal.

Lamb of God isn't even really metal.

That being said, I'm still seeing them in two days. Only because they're with 5 bands I like, though.

Mors Principium Est
Nile
Anorexia Nervosa - "Drudenhaus" and "New Obscurantis Order" for some deliciously fucked up death metal.
Anathema's "The Silent Enigma" and "Eternity" CDs

Seconding Amorphis - they're fantastic! Get Chapters, a kind of best-of with a few tracks from their albums in order, so you can find out what 'era' of Amorphis you like best.

bearing in mind that I like metal for the same reason I like Wagner, for the sheer ludicrous EPICNESS of it all...

what, no Hammerfall? they have a pretty good time being utterly ridiculous.

I've only actually heard one Finntroll song, so maybe you shouldn't trust me a lot, but it's a pretty sweet song. Any band that wants to combine ancient folk traditions with rockin it doom metal style is my friend.

Yeah Astriaal aren't half bad

"Renascent Misanthropy" is a great album, I'm pretty sure they're broken up now, which is a pity...

If you're digging Astriaal be sure to check out Portal, they're probably the best Austrlaian BM band at the moment and they put on one hell of a live show.

I really like Myrddraal as well, they were from my old home town (Canberra) and were fucking awesome. If you can pick up their "Blood on the Mountains" album try and do so its really good.

I shudder to think what Australian Blacketal is like. I have this 'vision' of leatherclad, corpsepainted people with big hats with corks on them. And a lot of grunting about 'G'd day, mate'.

If any country is un-black metal it must be Australia, to my mind.

Australia has some really good BM bands. When Nile came out this band from Perth called The Furor played. they were all corpsepainted up and the guitar player had some kind of Egyptian head dress on which made him look like he had horns......it made it pretty hard to take them seriously without constantly going 'Oh fuck, that guys got horns'
ok bad example....but the music was still cool

Theres been some pretty good BM bands from here over the years.  Theres more to playing BM then being "cold" and "necro".

Astennu, from Lord Kaos, went over to Norway and play on Dimmu Borgir's "Spiritual Black Dimmensions" as well as on  Covenant's "Nexus Polaris" both of which were pretty important releases, he's probably the most well known Australian BM musician.

Bands like Bestial Warlust, Destroyer 666, Spear of Longinus, Abyssic Hate etc are all pretty big overseas.
