:-o where the hell do you know THAT? ^^

btw: i don't really care about the band's belief as long as the lyrics aren't too religious

No dude, I was talking about me. I walk around with an Atheist shirt.

Also, to quote Believer:

"Christ's life, death and resurrection
proof of absolute diety"

But in the same album:

"The God the heart needs
the mind only grieves"

And

"Reason argues the existence of God
if the incarnate was crusified
the dialectical paradox colcludes that God
has already died".

As an atheist, I like this album.

Between the Buried and Me is not death metal in the slightest. And really, nothing Soilwork has done in the past few years has been worth squat. I'm assuming Simple Plan is just a joke.

But the rest of that list is pretty good. I'd add Kamelot and Angra to the power metal list.

Huh, I thought they rather fit the criteria from what I'd heard, and hella blast beats. But do share what you know that I don't. And I agree about Soilwork, I was refering more to old or mid Soilwork. Their latest CD might as well be metalcore, which is sad. And ah! I knew I was forgetting some bands. Thanks, added.

Oh, and yeah, Simple Plan was a joke.

it just kinda went downhill, really.  I can't stand anything after Colony.  Soundtrack to Your Escape was godawful.  which is why I don't recommend anything after the first two albums.

*quirks eyebrow* Okay, so there's something I obviously didn't notice from the songs by them I've heard. Then again, I never could tell exactly what math metal was, and just kind of figured it was a usueless label that doesn't really need to exist.

Math metal is an oxymoron. BTBAM aren't metal. Metalcore, yes, but that's a whole different thing.

Sorry for talking the fucking truth. They ain't metal. That isn't any judgement on their quality or anything, half the stuff I listen to isn't metal. There is metal influence to their music, but there's also a lot of non-metal influence, and aesthetically and culturally they're not metal at all.

Heavy as hell and lacking in emo vocals- in fact, they dont even sing that often that I'm aware of... But they're not metal? I guess heavieness isn't a factor. Could  you go a little more into the details of why you don't believe they're metal? In the meantime, I guess I'll just research them some more.

haha, i know.  He might play an 11-string on the next one.  Have you seen the 42-string guitar?  Played by Pat Metheny (not that great, I might add), google video his name, there's a 24-minute clip of one of their songs.  It's decent, but I hate the chinese-sounding harp bit that he does.

Heaviness has absolutely nothing to do with whether somethings metal or not. Terrorfakt are heavy as fuck and don't have emo vocals, but they're in no way metal.

I think we sort of established that heavieness wasn't a factor with you when I said "I guess heavieness isn't a factor". Would you like to elaborate on the actual reasons,
in more detail, why they're not in any way metal?

I never said they were not 'in any way metal'. I said they do have a metal influence, but they are not metal. They don't use musical structures identified with metal, they don't share the aesthetic qualities of metal, they're lyrics style is pure hardcore, their vocal style doesn't really resemble anything to do with metal. They named themselves after a line in a Counting Crows song. Any of these things on their own wouldn't necessarily mean much, but together they definitely add up to the band just not being metal.

Really, when I was saying that BtBaM was not death metal, I meant that they weren't metal at all, but I didn't want to stir shit up. But now that this debate has already surfaced, Khar's right. They're metalcore. Decent by metalcore standards, but still not metalcore.

And I actually think that all of In Flames' releases until Reroute to Remain are pretty enjoyable. Obviously their first two are their best and certainly their most original, but I have still been known to blast Pinball Map really loud at times.

Reroute and Soundtrack are fucking awful though. Come Clarity is listenable but not good, so I'm hoping that maybe they'll get back to making somewhat fun music again in the future.

Pinball Map is a damn fine tune. The first time I saw In Flames live they opened with it, and it still remains one of the highpoints of my live music history. I must admit I barely ever listen to In Flames nowadays however, that goes for any of their albums.

I find it interesting that there's some sort of metal heritage thing, or perhaps tradition is the better word. But by your own words, I've decided that black, death, doom, and any other kind of metal of any sort that came after metal was invented are not really metal. Their vocal and lyrical style were totally different from what metal was.

In fact, maybe Black Sabbath are the ONLY true metal band, being that they basicly invented it.[Then again, that might not be true, I'm sure others did it before them that just didn't get any attention or never made it.]

What you're saying leaves no room for innovation, development, or change... *shrug* Oh, and no shit stirred up at all, I think this is an interesting conversation. I'm not bothered, I hope no one else is. Tis just talk.

Sidenote: Pinball Map = \m/

What you're saying leaves no room for innovation, development, or
change...

Not at all. What I'm saying is there's only so much you can innovate before what you have isn't metal. It's the same in any genre: there are tons of artists who incorporate folk elements who I wouldn't call folk in a million years. Also, in BTBAM's case, they're coming from somewhere outside metal and incorporating metal elements, not working from within metal and diversifying, which does make a difference. There is a very definite metal 'heritage' as you put it, or culture. Some bands write most of their songs about it. Metalheads, though in many ways a quite diverse group, have definite shared aesthetics, tastes, views and so forth that bind them in a sense of cameraderie. Metal is more than just a set of musical conventions.

Also, I'd point out that, since Black Sabbath were doom metal, you're slightly off in your silly contentions.

Yeah, rather than do the usual Anal Cunt/Slint thing, I figured I'd throw those out there. They aren't metal, no. But they definitely have a screeching, noisy, atonal, and yet amazing quality about them, at any rate. Which is kind of METAL in my book.

Hm, all right. But how do you not "come from somewhere outside metal" when you're innovating it or inventing a new sound? I still say this means any metal band who put folk in there or any other elements like that arent metal. They're not coming from metal, they're coming from folk. They're just very influenced by metal. Same goes for the screaming or roaring, that wasn't originally part of metal heritage. Why do those things get made exceptions for?

You can't just pick a time where things suddenly cut off, where bands can no longer do things that origianally had nothing to do with metal. And Black Sabbath, Doom Metal? Yeah, I'm going to have to disregard that, I have no idea at all how they could be doom metal.  They influenced or inspired it, but that definitely doesn't make them doom metal.al.

Between the Buried and Me do not come from a musical background of metal. The largest band that members have previously been involved in was Prayer For Cleansing, a straigthedge metalcore band. Straightedge is almost culturally diametric to metal. Whilst one of them was in an MDM band (Undying) their other former bands (Voids, Azazel, From Here On) are all hardcore or metalcore groups, none of them metal enough to be mentioned on metal archives. BTBAM are signed to Victory records, a hardcore/metalcore/ska/pop-punk label, with stablemates like Aiden,The Black Maria, Comeback Kid, Silverstein, Minus, Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22, Voodoo Glow Skulls etc. They tour with bands like Norma Jean, The Junior Varsity, Fear Before the March of Flames, Into the Moat and Misery Signals, They aren't metalheads, they don't come from or engage with the metal underground, they don't interact with metal labels, distros or venues, they very rarely tour with metal bands (and then borderline grind crossover acts), they don't share the most basic ethics of metal, they don't act like metalheads, they don't dress like metalheads and they don't play fucking metal. This all adds up to a very big dose of NOT FUCKING METAL. As I said, I'm not saying this makes them shit or anything but they are NOT. FUCKING. METAL. They're hardcore kids pissing around with a few gothenburg licks. Nothing more, nothing less. You're critically fucking misunderstanding what I'm saying, possibly willfully, if you think what I'm saying is there is no room for innovation within the framework of metal. There is plenty, but within the framework of metal. BTBAM are innovating within the framework of hardcore by incorporating metal elements, not vice versa. Just compare metal-based crossover acts like Stormtroopers of Death to actually see the difference.

Black Sabbath are clearly listed in the Metal Archives as 'Heavy/Traditional, Doom Metal'. Wikipedia notes 'Heavy metal sub-genres Doom metal, Stoner metal, and Sludge metal reflect a direct influence from Black Sabbath, especially the slower, heavier style on the band's earlier albums' (emphasis mine). Have you actually heard any of Sabbaths songs? Like, say, Electric Funeral? Children of the Grave? Into The Void? Evil Eye? Lord of This World? Over and Over? Under The Sun, Every Day Comes? Now, have you ever heard  doom bands like Candlemass, Cathedral, Witchfinder General, Orange Goblinetc.? Of course Black Sabbath were fucking doom. 'Hand of Doom' is why we fucking call it Doom. After all (to quote wikipedia again, sorry, I know it's shit but sometimes it's right) "[Doom Metal] is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, and a number of early Black Sabbath tracks, such as "Black Sabbath", are often considered embryonic or prototypical doom metal songs. Many of the tracks on their third album Master of Reality (released in 1971) seem to have more in common with what today is seen as doom metal, with tracks such as "Sweet Leaf", "Into The Void", and "Children of the Grave" that featured Tony Iommi's guitar (and presumably Geezer Butler's bass) tuned down to C# for heavier riffing and reduced string tension for his previously injured fingers." They not just inspired doom metal, they were, for several albums, pretty much pure doom, in the classic sense.

I'm not willfully misundetstanding, I assure you. Clearly this is pointless, because I don't believe ANY of that matters in the least. I've never believed in heritage, tradition, or fitting into a culture. But I see what you believe and I'm done questioning it. So since you've made your self perfectly clear and I see what you're saying, I'd like to ask this new question inspired by something you said.

Let me make a set up here, this is sort of a "what if" question with no bearing on reality. So, members from these bands: Less Than Jake, Linkin Park, Incubus, and Hoobastank, form one band. And they form Opeth. [Far fetched and idioticly impossible, I'm sure, CutMan knows that]. And I'm not saying they copy them, I'm saying this is an alternat reality where they ARE Opeth. And then Opeth signs to Victory and tours with Atreyu. Are they metal?

Okay, fine, consider them what you want. And yes, I've heard Sabbath. And yes, I've heard Cathedral and Candlemass, mostly Candlemass[Good band], and I still don't see how you can call them doom metal. So let's forget about that, shall we? No point there. *shrugs*

The fact that it's obviously impossible makes it hardly worth considering, although the answer would be yes. Remember that BTBAM does not even play metal.

Ah, yes, what if questions never really have any bearing on anything. I just thought it would be interesting. Also, we're passed BTBAM, we're not talking about them anymore, why'd you mention them? I already know what you think they play. And by the way, are you this much of an ass with everyone who dissagrees with you? I've gone out of my way to be nice to you even after you obviously got rather indignant. And now I'm an idiot? I think someone needs a cat nap, Mr. Grumpy-pants.

And I'm doing a lot of research into doom metal now, and you know what, I dont think I even know what doom metal is. Candlemass is called doom metal, but I dont see whats so "doom" about what I've heard. In fact, if they are doom metal, then Nevermore must be a cross between doom metal and thrash.
Since I dont really listen to doom, I aparrantly thought of it as being something it's not.

Do everyone a kind favor and learn how to have a conversation with someone who's mistaken about something without insulting them.

I can easily conduct a conversation with someone who is mistaken if they do not keep on restating their ignorance. For example, you've gone on about how you don't consider Black Sabbath to be doom...and then admitted you know nothing about fucking doom. You're not just ignorant, you're willfully so, and I can be rude to whoever I damn well please, quite frankly. If you think I've been insulting, then you've obviously got a very thin skin. Also, whilst I'm here I should point out that you're method of formatting your posts is utterly retarded.

Actually, I've rarely SEEN you conduct a conversation
that remained civil for very long, but I wont get personal, why do that.

For the record, I was quite sure I DID know what doom was. And you know what? I believe I actually did, you had me confused for a post there,  but I've checked this out further, I've talked to people who really know what doom is. And they all told me I was right in the first place. Doom is a slower, darker style. Depressingly so quite often, which is the intended effect. An ominous style. Black Sabbath had some slower, menacing songs... Notice the word "some"? Quite a bit of what they did was kind of felt more like "rock", but it was heavier than anything before them so it became "metal". You listen to a song by them like "Fairies Wear Boots" and then tell me their doom.

The one who's willingly ignorant is you, you live inside your own little world where you think you know everything there is to know about what is or isn't metal. I swear, you're going to end up- if you arent already, one of those people who sit around talking about how "back in the day, we had real metal." And for the record, when you start calling people idiots... Uh, you're being insulting. Of course, the fact that I think you're insulting doesnt mean I have "a thin skin". I don't give a shit, I just thought I'd point it out.

And I'll format my posts however I want them to be formatted, nice attempt at a personal insult though, too bad this was never supposed to be personal to begin with.
Have a nice day.

Congratulations on still being a fucking idiot, and on making this far more personal than I ever did. Here's a guy who thinks Demons and Wizards are thrash, Faith No More are Prog and Children of Bodom are MDM telling me I'm ignorant for thinking I know everything about metal. I do despair sometimes, I really fucking do.

Demons & Wizards, if I did what I intended to, were put on both my "thrash" reccomendations and on my "power metal" reccomendations. Because they have a great deal in common with both. Faith No More being prog is a bit of a stretch, but I didn't know where else to put them, I figured it was close enough. So hey, And as for Children of Bodom, if they're not melodic death metal... What are they exactly? Bouncy Death with catchy riffs? Folk metal? Morbidly goofy metal? And you really do seem to think you know everything about metal. Tell me something that makes me wrong about you- something solid, give me anytrhing, and I'll gladly take back ANY or all of what I said about you. I'm not being sarcastic here. I'll take back any remarks about you thinking you know everything or being arrogant.

And I apoligize if I made it a little "more" personal. It was a little hard not to, what with you delving into judging my intelligence. Kind of just came naturally, kind of like you calling me an "idiot" came naturally and wasnt personal or insulting at all.

*claps* Bravo, and so ends another episode of "Attempting to Talk to a Know-it-all". Tune in next time when KharBevNor says nothing of any relevance in the closing of what was started as a friendly converstaion- again! Glad you're amused, guess your "a thin skin" healed over the wound my brain-reezing annoyingness tore into your flesh.

Oh, another reccomendation. To atleast partly make up for going so off topic, sorry about that whoever originally started this- I forgot your name Some sort of death, I'm finished with sub-sub labels: Amorphis.

Damn good band, whatever the hell they are.

I want to think you're talking about The Karelian Isthmus, I really do. In actuality, what I have said has been of quite a bit of relevance (because it has actually been right).

I'm sorry, but I really want you to keep talking because this stuff you keep coming out with (I presume you would call it 'wit') is just pure fucking gold.

Uh, actually, I am. That and Tales From the Thousand Lakes. And you've said things with relevance before, it's what you ended it with that was irrelevant. You told me I was amusing...and... That was it.

And wit? I wouldn't go that far... Sarcasm maybe? I was done, but if you want to keep talking, why not. *shrugs*
