Anyone else got a character on Second Life?
www.secondlife.com

I've been making custom animations for people to use, but otherwise haven't really been doing much with it.  Just curious who else is there.

It looks like...
The Sims. But with much more customisation.

You'll have to sell it to me Joe. Why are YOU there?

I made a character on a free account.  If I knew there was a referral thing I would have asked for your name first so you got the $2.5k L

I kind of uh, walked around a bit.  Then flew about a bit.  Customised my avatar a wee little bit, then kind of fell into the area where everyone is trying to sell you stuff.  That sucked, because it kind of gave me the impression that's all there was there.

Then I randomly teleported to a few places and talked to some nice dude who gave me the location of the Info Island, and I chatted to a librarian who gave me $250 for no apparent reason.  So I guess I'm going to check it out more tomorrow and see if there's anything interesting to muck about with.

It doesn't really look all that interesting though.  Maybe learning how to make things will gimme something to do there, I dunno.

meh, I'm not gonna sell you on it.  As I said, I'm not all that involved myself; I was curious if there was anyone else there doing something interesting.  Second Life seems a lot like the internet at large: a bunch of private areas where the interesting stuff happens, a bunch of commercial areas where people are selling stuff, and a lot of porn.

The most interesting event I was at so far was some dude's house party; I think I need to look for more of those.  Also, it's funny to skydive in on random plots of land, since you can do that basically anywhere.

Yeah, most of my time so far has been spent making spiffy little animations, which for an animator is a gas.  Customizing your avatar can get pretty out there; mostly I spend my time looking like a Star Trek alien, but sometimes I turn into Snoopy or Robosapien or something weird like that.

Besides that it seems like a big 3D chat thing, sort of like gabbly with 3D graphics.  Which is cool in and of itself.  I mean c'mon, Snowcrash anyone?

Also, the ten bucks (what 2500L is worth) for every referral is just if the person upgrades to a paid account.  Free basic accounts don't matter.

ADDITION: Oh yeah, if anyone wants to look me up I'm Johan Durant.

If you're on Windows, right-click on the desktop, choose Properties, and then go to the Settings tab.

Joe, I am really thinking about learning how to create things in this game.  I mean, I don't think that I will get to the point where I am selling them, but the idea of creating something and just leaving it lying around for others to use isn't unwelcome.  I visited the (second?) Info Island & was impressed by the libraries there.  That was pretty cool.

While I am not sure if it is for me, I do appreciate the idea of people being able to create premium-quality content, then sell/rent it to other people at a fairly reasonable price, then cash out that money into real-world dollars.  It is a neat concept.

i actually got this thing to run on my crummy computer (albeit poorly). its pretty interesting, its pretty hard to get involved with at first but i think it could be really cool once i get used to it and figure out more things about it.
i just made a free account and am running it on a shitty computer so i probably wont be on very often.
but anyway, the name's Dino Moy if you see me around acting a fool, say "hey" or something.

i'm actually starting to sort of get into this. i've sort of gotten the hang of the building system (barely) and have started to realize its potential.

any pointers or advice for beginners in the world of building? i've just been dicking around and trying to teach myself how to build things and i just finished an okay katana which i was pretty stoked about.

Haha, I've created a character, Rizzo Lurra.
Come find me. Still trying to work out how to hold the things I've made.

EDIT: I've deleted it already. Too laggy on this computer and conflicts with MSN, Steam and Skype.

Okay, I've found something new about this.  While the 3D chat aspect of it is still very true (ie. this is an elaborate chat program,) I've discovered that interior decorating is extremely addictive.  Whereas in real life moving furniture around involves a lot of hard labor, in Second Life you just click and drag.  Furnishing your home and trying out different looks is so satisfying.  And it's nice to receive housewarming gifts, like the rug someone gave me.

I'm still trying to get the hang of 1L.  2L sounds a bit ambitious at this juncture.

Actually, mine is a free account too.  Don't actually have a home yet, but I'm making enough from selling animations to rent a little shop, and last night I wasted a lot of time happily decorating it.  If business picks up, I might start renting an apartment.

I just uninstalled this because I realised that all I was doing every day was wandering the freebie yards looking for better skins and clothing and hanging around money trees looking for cash.

For some reason I didn't feel like I was good enough to interact with other people that had decent avatars, but I didn't have enough money to upgrade my avatar to the point where I felt like I could.  I am pretty sure this is intended, and is one of the driving factors in getting people to spend money.

Also, other than talking to random people I couldn't really find anything else to do in the game that didn't involve some kind of gambling or porn.  Is there actually anything else to do?  Even the Slingo stuff that is all over the place is basically gambling.  It looked like the most fun thing, so I tried playing last night but then quit in disgust halfway through when the lag was so bad that I'd missed 3 out of 10 of the rounds.

pfft, if I was waiting to upgrade my avatar before interacting with people, I'd never talk to anyone.  I set my appearance when I first joined, and haven't changed it since.  Well, other than occasionally gags then when I turn into Snoopy.

And yeah, I haven't bothered hitting any casinos or clubs because I just know it'll get so laggy my computer will crash.

I think that the thing is that even though I joined with the intention of creating things I couldn't really be bothered learning how to create things.  I mean, I created a big textured sphere that looked like it rotated, but that's about it.

Foiled by my own sloth yet again!

money schmoney. i havent been in posession of a single L$ since i started playing and i've been having fun. and i've only interacted with 2 or 3 people. and they started talking to me, anyway. i've just been learning the building and scripting systems and making stuff to amuse myself. i made a samurai sword for my avatar to hold one in each hand and i made one of those japanese thatched rain hats. besides that i've been coding really stupid stuff like a cube that launches in a huge arc away from you when you touch it and junk like that just to get the hang of it all.

i tend to avoid those really populated areas because my computer would shit the bed if i tried to hang out in one for too long.
and what exactly is a money tree? is it an actual tree that gives money?
i dunno, never heard of it.

anyway, the name's Dino Moy so look me up if your bored, i guess.

Then definitely avoid money trees.  Or camping chairs, or any of the other gimmics people will use to attract traffic.  Basically, they give away small amounts of money (yes, money trees are trees with money hidden in the branches) to attract crowds to their venues.

I avoid laggy areas too.  Clubs are the worst.  How is it any fun to have a conversation with someone where the game is running at half a frame per second and stuff you type doesn't show up onscreen for like a full minute?
