3 Records For My Blog

Every week I listen to three or more new records and post samples/my thoughts on my blog.  Music is a relatively new passion for me and the scope of the history and movements that I want to cover is fairly vast.  I decided that each week I'd like to get some suggestions on this board, just to keep things moving pretty smoothly.  For next week, I've decided that I want to listen to Return to Cookie Mountain by TVoTR.

As for the other two, I've recently been getting heavily into metal (no pun intended) and am looking to get into a new band.  I am totally in love with Opeth, Agalloch and Boris right now if that helps.  I'm not a big fan of the trash I've heard but suggest it if you think it's mindblowing.  I'm looking for this to be a milestone record, something that defined a genre or is typically reputed to be classic/genre defining.  I know that's a tall order, so I'll be looking for input from Khar especially.

As for the second, I want to listen to a band that had major impact in the indie scene in the 90's, your Pixies, Dr. Junior, Pavement whatever.

Just interested to see what's suggested, thanks ahead of time.

Hm. How about some Mudhoney? The Melvins? Screaming Trees?

As for metal; Skyclad. I am getting more and more addicted to these guys every day. (Thanks, Khar!)

Hissing Prigs in Static Couture - Brainiac.

I've been listening to it all day, nevvver gets old.

That's for the "Indie rock from the 90's" category obviously.

Tortoise has a new retrospective; I haven't heard it, but it's supposedly a really good time capsule of their career. They'd be a good fit for "mid-90's band," though "major impact" is debatable.

Well, if you want to cover the historical aspects, don't write about TVotR, and go back further than the 90s.
I advise you start from the beginning, since you say you're relatively new at this. Don't jump in the deep end before you can swim.

Without telling you exactly what to write about...

Look at these 90s indie rock artist, list what they have in common. Trace these features. You'll realise that entire movements can probably be attributed to 2 or 3 bands. Write about THOSE bands. Not the bands that they inspired. At least not at first.

Yeah, obviously the smart thing for the guy to do is an entire musicology of 90's indie rock before he reviews anything.

You want him to start from the beginning? What does that even mean? The Velvet Underground? Chuck Berry? Jazz? Blues? Germanic marching music? tribal dances?

Entire movements can be attributed to 2 or 3 bands?  Seriously, can you name for us the three bands that created 90's indie rock? I'm a big fan and I'd like to know who to thank.

Actually Menudo were one of the most original and innovative bands ever. I know this because according to allmusic Menudo had no influences at all! Without Menudo there'd be no Kraftwerk.

Muahahaha, it spreads. I probably do more to advertise Skyclad than the band themselves...

Speaking of Skyclad, thrash metal and genre-defining:

Skyclad - Wayward Sons of Mother Earth

As for others suggestions:

...And Oceans - A.M.G.O.D. (The Allotropic Metamorphic Genesis of Dimorphism)
Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Borknagar - The Olden Domain
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
Ewigkeit - Radio Ixtlan
Limbonic Art - Moon in the Scorpio
Mayhem & The Meads of Asphodel - Freezing Moon/Jihad split
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Thorns - Thorns
Ulver - Bergtatt
Tiamat - Wildhoney

That should keep you busy for a bit

Not really. Anal Cunt is now officially an old meme, as is all Anal Cunt metanarrative. I thought we'd already established that we would now use Crotchduster for all facetious recommendations.

Well when someone actually requests for metal recomendations wouldn't it be more appropriate to suggest the Decemberists. Maybe Gnarles Barkley.

This Crotchduster band is probably more for the "more music like the Arcade Fire" threads.
