Heya! Yes, first post, shut up.
Anyway, I was reading the WCT on some of the older comics, and came across a Tom Lehrer.
That was seriously the first tiem I'd ever heard of anybody else even KNOWING of him, in real life or Internetty
So, who else here knows of his genius?

  • "That's all," he added.

First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
Then genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Oh god yes!
I love love LOVE the Vatican Rag.
Also: Poisoning Pigeons in the Park for the win.

I have the lyrics to pretty much all his songs but one completely memorized.

Any guesses as to which one I cannot, for the life of me, remember all the lyrics to?

That is exactly the one I was thinking of.

For those of you who have never heard this, he rattles off the ENTIRE FREAKING PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS to the tune of "Modern Major general."

That is the ultimate toungue-twister, and he enunciates everything perfectly.

Wow, that is somehow exactly on the line between "Really Nerdy" and "Kick-awesome"

Um, I did kinda mean that as a compliment, not sure it came out right.

I actually have two Tom Lehrer albums:  That Was The Year That Was and Revisited.  I started listening to him in college, lo these many moons ago.  I love his stuff.

if you were to describe his music to someone who has NO idea what he plays, how would you do such a thing?

Overeducated Harvard (or is he a Yallie?) man writes darkly funny piano songs.

Jim Morrison was a fan.

'Oh we'll all go together when we go/every Hottentot and every Eskimo".
they're doing a theatrical tribute to him in Melbourne

How I ache for the touch of your lips dear
But much more for the touch of your...whips dear
You can raise welts like nobody else
As we dance to the masochism tango

Last time a Tom Lehrer thread came around I just posted the entire lyrics to "Smut!" because I still know 'em.

Wow, that is somehow exactly on the line between "Really Nerdy" and "Kick-awesome"

That is a fine line that I walk every single day.

I sang the masochism tango for karaoke once. Fortunately it was all the nerds at a nerd school who were too nerdy to be out at real parties.

My knowledge of Tom Lehrer can be blamed squarely on my father's vinyl collection. He is a baron of nerds (my dad). Not the king, but definitely a sort of minor lord.

I usually describe Tom Lehrer as "Weird Al if he were far more overeducated and clever with just a piano and his brilliance."

But maybe you had better let it go at that.

Why does that song remind me of Finding Nemo?

The only song I had heard before was the Masischmo Tango

Or you may find yourself with a quite complex co-o-omplex and
You may end up like Oedipus--
I'd rather marry a duck-billed platypus,
Than end up like old Oedipus Reeeeeeeeex!
