2007 Big Day Out
« on: 03 Oct 2006, 12:52 »

So for those of us downunder, the first announcement for next year's Big Day Out has been made:

Tool, Muse, Violent Femmes, The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Evermore, Jet, Scribe, The Spazzys, The Herd, Eskimo Joe, Shape Shifter, The Sleepy Jackson, Minuit, Open Souls, Peaches, The Mint Chicks, The Veils, Spank Rock, The Tutts.

So far my verdict: LAME

I know! I've already seen Tool, Muse, Violent Femmes, and Peaches before.

I would love to see Peaches play again but I'm not flying across the country just for her, and The Mint Chicks are one of my favourite bands but they're from New Zealand so I'll be seeing them play in my own city in a dingy bar somewhere. No one else on the list is the least bit interesting. Gah!

I've seen MCR live, and whatever you think of them they put on a very good live show. Tight, energetic pop-rock, and it's sung by a guy capable of exuding supreme control over a large chunk of his audience.

Peaches and Violent Femmes I'd see, but those two aren't enough to save that lineup.  As it is, I wouldn't waste the money if I were you.

I almost threw up when I heard about it in the car. But I'll still go, I shall see MCR because sometimes I like to give into the 14 year old girl that lives inside me, and I've heard good things about peaches but have yet to see. I'll see The Killers and Muse aswel. If theres a gap in my schedule due to lack of bands, I can fill it with booze and cigarettes.

Its such a shame. I heard rumours of Pixies and Flaming Lips. The only band I actually like on the bill is The Spazzys but I don't want to pay $100+ when i can see them play by themselves for like $10.

...Big day out i associate with triple J >.>
Dunno why, but, i do, triple j has been complete shite of late (Or for the last 2/3yrs), so no surprize the big day out is shite as well. This could be because they're the only radio station thats truely uniform national and they're the pop bastard divas of the wannabe hipster/indie kids, but eh, whatever...

Only thing i'll fork out $100 for is an Eels ticket, and even when i do that, i'm kinda thinking $100 for 2hrs? Where's the massage parlour! >.>

does anybody else from melbourne agree with me that princes park is an infinitely better venue for it than the showgrounds?

That's why I was really hoping it'd be a good line-up this week: Princes Park is about a 10-minute walk from my house.  I mean, how often is a major festival that conveniently located?!  Last year I could clearly hear Iggy Pop from my back garden.  I guess this week I'm going to be hearing My Chemical Romance instead.  How awful!

Tool and Muse FUCK YES!!!!

I actually wouldn't mind seeing MCR, but don't tell anyone I said that....
Hopefully the second announcement will bring somebody else worth forking out for, although even if it was 10 hours of excruciating torture followed by Tool, I'd still fork out my $115.

And there you have my major reason for not going; tool fans.

I like Muse and I wouldn't mind seeing MCR, I've also heard they do a good live show regardless of their music.
I'd pay maybe 60 bucks for that but not 120...

but hey, does anyone actually go to festivals for the music? i thought the whole point was to bring a posse of friends and get riotously drunk on bootleg booze, then go and see the bands you actually like at their sideshows where the beer is better/cheaper/both and the set goes for longer than 45 minutes and there aren't 10000 annoying teenagers with slogan shirts.

anyway.

lame lame lame laaaaaame. although does anybody else from melbourne agree with me that princes park is an infinitely better venue for it than the showgrounds? i mean, grass, and trees!!! aside from the fact that the noise from the mainstages seems to overpower the other ones, i liked the whole setup.

but yeah, i'm not going. i was way disappointed last year, and that actually had one or two bands i wanted to see.

more beer money for falls!

im going to falls and i think that lineup is worse. i was hoping the later announcements would be good, but so far no.
if modest mouse werent playing id consider selling my ticket, only thing is all my friends are going so id probably spent NYE drunk at home by myself

last year i barely saw any bands, its just getting hammered with mates that makes it really as salada puts it

yeah, i couldn't really give a shit about the lineup at falls. spending 4 days completely drunk, one of those days being new years eve, with 970470732 other people just as happy about the situation as you, the music is kind of a bonus. BDO on the other hand is one day of lots of standing up drinking overpriced beer, and you have to actually walk outside of the festival to sleep.

regardless of all my anti-bdo ranting, i'll prolly go still...

yea illprob go to bdo aswell

falls will be awesome though, last year we had this massive group of like 20 people all camping together and like 10 people camping not too far away. my only regret is telling myself i wont drink on NYE until after the dandy warhols play so i can remember it.... so i went nearly the whole day and night without drinking, got really angry about it and drank the whole days alcohol in 2 hours before the dandys. needless to say i didnt remember it.

is there a falls thread on here? so i dont take over this one?

Green Day is to any decent act what The Vulture was to Spider-Man. Even a brief connection means Green Day sucks out their life force.

I'm thinking about going. But the only bands I care about are Tool, Muse, The Herd, Peaches, and maybe The Sleepy Jackson.

That said, since I managed to miss out on tickets to both Tool and Muse, it might be worth it. Then I can just munch disco biccies and go jump around in the boiler room for the rest of the time.

I was thinking about going if the second announcement was decent, mostly because I am a huge freaking Tool fan. Then I heard that the only reason Tool aren't doing a sideshow in Brisbane is because the Gold Coast BDO never sells out and they actually got paid not to do a sideshow to sell it out.

God I hope thats just a terrible rumor. The point is I am not particularly impressed with the lineup anyway, and I really don't think I can afford a 125 dollar Tool ticket.

GC BDO always sells out eventually. Its almost sold out now. Headlining bands hardly ever play side shows in Brisbane because of the tight schedule after playing NZ and then probably playing side shows in Sydney.

but i don't like the majority of the music that is coming out right now on the radio.

what do you suggest? cat empire? sarah blasko? rogue traders? the herd? cog? alex fucking loyd?

as well as the two aforementioned bands i also dig
stereo city, steppin' razor, mindsnare, toe to toe, AVO, twin city faction, kampei, bagster, the new justice team, the colytons, extra limb,
the breakout, the critics, masstrauma, jungle fever, the signals, rex banner, blister, game over, frenzal rhomb, the living end, rofl, frank rizzo,
r.a.d, the optionals, 2 by 4, strike first, mid youth crisis, the suns, straitjacket and heaps more.
i usually am at a live music venue either playing or listening to bands at least 3 times a month.

i don't think i'm really missing out if i don't buy the latest single by wolfmother either.

See, this is the thing with the Big fucking Day Out nowdays.  They announce a bunch of "big name" acts in the first lineup announcement, then the tickets go on sale and scalpers buy all the tickets in the first day.  Then they wait for the second lineup announcement where they announce all the fucking bands people like my friends and I want to see.  Then the scalpers put the tickets onto Ebay we have to pay exhorbitant fees if we want to see the couple of bands that are any good because they aren't doing any fucking sideshows because they don't find it financially viable or something.

Mother Fuckers.

That said, I bought three tickets to Sydney's Big Day Out this year because I wanted to go with my friends.  My friends didn't get tickets though, because the fucking things sold out an hour after opening.  Now I hear that they are releasing 10,000 extra tickets by some random fucking ballot thing that they think deters scalpers but which only fucks things up for everyone else and that they will probably rort somehow anyway.

So yeah, I used to love the Big Day Out, but now with inept ticket sale management, dickheads who aren't interested in any of the bands but still go for "the atmosphere" (ie: to get drunk and be fucking idiots) and scalpers buying everything they can in order to sell them on Ebay at ridiculous markup it's steadily becoming something on my "not worth the fucking hassle anymore" list.  I am seriously thinking about selling these tickets to my friends at no profit then crossing my fingers and hoping if any decent bands are announced in the second wave that they wind up doing side-shows.

Mach Pelican are better fake Ramones then the Spazzys. Spazzys are touring with You Am I (which i will see- we're giving away tickets on the site) and Mach Pelican are back with Guitar Wolf. i got into a big discussion about them (Mach Pelican) at the Grates afterparty

fave Aussie bands:
Grates, Architechture in Helsinki, Hummingbirds, Saints, Crayon Fields, Panda Band, Nick Cave, Go-Betweens
i was into the Spazzys last year too

The Sleepy Jackson sound like the Panda Band with a bigger budget. This is a compliment. I also think 'Panda Band backing singer' is a better place for Katy Steele then 'Little Birdy frontwoman'.
We're also giving away Panda Band stuff on the site soon!

A good post, including rants against scalpers and BDO ticketing strategies

QF fucking T.

Scalpers are becoming a huge fucking problem. This year I have missed out on tickets to Falls Festival, Harbourlife, Field Days, BDO, Tool, Muse, and several more great events that I would love to go and see because they've sold out within hours, with a significant proportion of those tickets going to scalpers.

Normally I'm a big fan of online things, but I for one would be happy to see the death of online ticketing, at least for big shows and festivals. Sure, it's really useful for smaller gigs, etc., but the ability to buy masses of tickets on different credit cards is giving scalpers free reign. Sites like eBay could do a shitload more to fix the problem, too.

Also, I'm sick of fucking bogan retards going along for the ride. I went to Parklife a few weekends ago, and a significant proportion of the crowd were Southern-Cross tattoo-sporting dickheads from the Shire, who were ramped up on Ice and Smirnoff, and they had a damn good shot at ruining the event. I have no doubt that BDO will be worse.

I lost my girlfriend at Parklife because I hated dance music.
Or thought I did.

Um
St Jerome's Laneway Festival is announced on Friday. That should have a good lineup and no bogans.
But yeah... sideshows, people. Though i like the BDO vibe and i'm kinda bummed i don't have tix for BDO or Homebake. Even if the lineup's lame you're still spending all day wandering around seeing bands... and as much as its a guilty pleasure singing along to Helena or Mr Brightside with a zillion other people would be kinda cool

Its certainly a waste of cash but I may end up going anyway becouse no matter what decent acts get anounced I know they won't do a Brisbane sideshow (DAMN YOU SPENDOR IN THE GRASS!)  I when I was yonger I would've killed to see tool. These days, meh.
Plus the BDO degenerates will be there... (Sanity retaining tip #523: DO NOT LOOK AT THE BDO FORUMS)
Violent Femmes, Spazzys and Peaches would be rad though. Also whats this talk of New Porno's? I haven't seen any anouncements about them.

Look at me! I'm marketing virally!

Tour was announced today. Its a Merideth sideshow. I'm hoping Neko Case does her own show.
Spazzys aren't worth a BDO for... they play everywhere, and weren't even worth headlining last year's first Come Together.
I heard BDO forum was the big Aussie music board. Why are there so many Aussie music fans here, BTW?

Cheap Trick/Thin Lizzy also announced today as well as My Chemical Romance sideshows

Hey, don't put it past them.  I was at last year's festival & had my enjoyment of BSS absolutely ruined by all the shitfaced bogans pushing past me into an already sardine-packed space.  These people have absolutely no respect for others.  One drunk fuck actually shouted "MOVE!" and charged elbows-first into a bunch of ladies.

Goddamn fucking assholes.

You should have seen some of the ice-fueled shit that happened at Parklife.

Example story that I heard (didn't see, but I have no reason to disbelieve) involved some Southern-Cross sporting wanker who walked up to a girl he didn't know and grabbed her full by the crotch. She screamed, her boyfriend intervened, and was promptly set upon by the dude and three of his mates. He got pretty much destroyed, had his hand shattered with a chair, and while her boyfriend was lying bleeding on the ground, the girl was then forcibly ejected by security for "starting a fight"(!)

Scum. Absolute fucking scum.
