Need some help...
« on: 03 Oct 2006, 19:34 »

At the end of the month, I am going to be DJ'ing a couple of halloween parties/dances for some high school kids in my area (it'll make me some extra cash).  Can you guys give me some suggestions for a handful of songs that are kind of halloween-ish, and would be appropriate for that kind of setting?

Basically, 90% of the music I'm gonna have to play at these gigs will be shitty minstream pop music, but if I can throw in a few songs that are cool and fit the whole theme of the party, then I will feel less awful about all the crap.  Thanks in advance!

Born With a Tail by Super Suckers.

I requested this once at a halloween school disco and was only met with a confused stare from the DJ.

As we well know, Halloween is all about the metal. So play the darkest, heaviest shit you have. *nod*

If you pick any Misfits songs, skip on the Last Caress though.  The whole I killed your baby and raped your mother thing might not go over too well if anyone is paying atention to lyics.

If I thought I could get away with it, I'd play Pig Destroyer's "Natasha" but I don't think that would go over so well...

The other tricky thing is that I'm doing this through my day job, so I have to represent our station as well...if I accidentally piss anybody off, I'll be getting chewed out the next Monday.  Thanks for the suggestions though, and hopefully they keep coming...

Tommy, do you have any specific songs I could look up?  I'm not really familiar with either one of these bands.

Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party or Heard Somebody Cry
His Name is Alive - Get Your Curse On(perhaps)
Kaizers Orchestra - Død Manns Tango
Of Montreal - Chrissie Kiss the Corpse(a bit too graphic perhaps)
Some Zutons would be ideal, a whole lot from their debut and
The Zutons - You've Got a Friend in Me

The Zombies would only work if people actually knew who they were.

You're going to need some All Mighty Senators there. Perhaps "Giant Steps" or "Kung Fu Masters" would be good. Also some of Beck's faster stuff is both good and fun. "Sexx Laws" = perfection.

Some early Sonic Youth ("Protect Me You," "Ghost Bitch," "Halloween," etc.) could fit into a Halloween theme, but by your description the kids who'll be there would probably hate it. Also, they wouldn't fit at all into a dance environment, except for maybe some of the more up-tempo songs like World Looks Red, Brother James or Death Valley '69.

However, the Ramones' "I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement" and "You Should Never Have Opened That Door" should be great for it. Especially the latter.

Finally, the Decemberists' "Shankill Butchers" could work, although the kids might find it too slow.

i second the early sonic youth, especially "death valley 69." the misfits are required, and i add the groovie ghoulies, specifically "tunnel of love," or "graveyard girlfriend."

the cramps and the misfits are suitable.

they are vaguely cartoonish and i don't think they have any swearing in their songs.

You're forgetting the best Misfits lyric of all time:

"I ain't no god damn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby!"

The Unicorns- "Tuff Ghost"
Bad Brains- "F.V.K. (Fearless Vampire Killers)"
The Aquabats!- "Fashion Zombies!"
Man or Astro-Man?- "King of the Monsters"
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra- "Monster Rock"
Anything off The Lillingtons' Death By Television.  Pretty much every song is B horror/sci-fi movie themed.
Nerf Herder- "She's a Sleestak"
Wesley Willis- "Vampire Bat"

The kids might not like some of these, but fuck 'em.  Most kids have terrible taste in music.

i don't think they have any swearing in their songs.

"The dirt's gonna be your dessert
My cum be your life source
And the only way to get it
Is to suck or fuck
Or be poor and devoid
And masturbate me, masturbate me
Then slurp it from your palm
Like a dry desert soaking up rain
Soaking up sun
Like a dry desert soaking up rain
Soaking up sun"

I'd recommend newer stuff for a kids thing. 'Scream!' might go down well the video
