Converge is my favorite band without question.  Modern Life Is War has blown me away since I heard Witness last year, and are in my top 5...can't wait till next month when I get to see them both together.  All these other bands I absolutely love.

I didn't really give a shit about Ringworm until I saw them with Converge, The Red Chord, and Darkest Hour last year, and something about their set won me over and made me a fan.  Finally, a friend of mine introduced me to Envy earlier this year, and I have to say that I haven't heard anything that beautiful come from a band that heavy in quite a while...

If you like Envy, and you haven't done so already, may I recommend checking out some other bands from the Level Plane roster?  You might enjoy:

Gospel
Amanda Woodward
Aussitot Mort
City Of Caterpillar
Malady

among others.

I can understand a distaste for them, but Horna are seriously one of the best black metal bands around nowadays. Of course, if you don't like black metal, I can understand, but you seem to be an Aborym fan so...

Along with Level Plane, you should look at some of the React with Protest artists.  I like Louise Cyphre, La Quiete (amazing live, probably better than on CD), June Paik, Raein and maybe some more that I can't think of off hand.

Let's face it, there's very little that's better than La Quiete live. I love that band so much. When they kick into La Maestra Non Sa Che Illich Mi Ha Parlato Del Programma Occulto it's just incredible and the way crowds react to them is insane.

I've always found Raein quite weak though, their tracks on the Daitro split are just too screamo by numbers. Jupiter Lander and Funeral Diner seriously outclass them.

well, I suppose to be completely honest I only have 3 Raein songs on my computer, and 2 songs off a plit the did with Phoenix Bodies, so I don't have  huge range of their music.  What I have is quite incredible, though.

Funeral Diner are also quite good.

So, as a  sugue from Funeral Diner, check out the Ebullition Records site.

on a couple of occasions i did offstage for a band don devore joined after ink and dagger.

he is a very nice guy and an incredible guitarist to say the least.

i think musically im more influenced by ink & dagger than any other band,we definitly butchered one of their songs on our second album as a secret track...a secret it shouldve remained.

I disagree, at least in part, as I like almost all those bands to one or another degree (all but two assuming Z.B. refers to Zyklon-B. I haven't heard Wigrid or Curse). However, Horna are without a doubt one of my favourite underground BM bands: part of it is the fact that they just seriously rock, with a hefty thash/punk influence, probably filtered via Carpathian Forest, given the way it's mixed with some truly bleak, depressing atmosphere. They also really do sound vile: their production is generally a spot on, allowing the instruments to stand out whilst still delivering a raw BM kick. There's too much tame, un-threatening BM around nowadays, you need some proper blood vomiting filth: again, this is the reason I so fucking love Carpathian Forest, and Nattefrost in general. He genuinely sounds sick, diseased, unwashed and filthy.

As for Vlad Tepes, who are by far and away the best Les Legiones Noires band, I just think they write great songs. There's an understanding of melody buried under all that cheap as fuck recording that allows them to write songs that truly deserve the appelation 'epic' with only the simplest of elements. Yes, they are fantastically over-rated by stupid kvlt wankers who think that liking the LLN makes them, liek, tooootally grim, But they still write good primitivist black metal. I'm not one of these people who thinks the worse an albums production is the better it is, but I do have to admit I like a lot of raw, guttural black metal. 1349, for example: I generally prefer 'Chaos Preferred' and '1349' to the albums (though there are some kick-ass tracks scattered about: 'Riders of the Apocalypse' is the sound of Satans biker boot in Jesus' tender groin). It's not that I dislike melody or symphony, I just seem to feel that sort of thing more. That said, my 10 favourite BM albums (no order) are probably:

Bathory - The Return...
Burzum - Burzum
Carpathian Forest - Defending The Throne Of Evil
Dark Fortress - Stab Wounds
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice
Immortal - Battles in the North
Isengard - Vinterskugge
Marduk - Heaven Shall Burn...When We Are Gathered
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

So, pretty mainstream all in all.

I'm not a huge fan of the Black Legions stuff, what I've heard of Mutiilation was ok, never really got V.T though.

1349 gives me the shits. It's like Immortal without the riffs or something. "Liberation" the album everyone seems to worship just sounds really boring to me. I don't mind "Beyond the Appocalypse", they actually slow down and play some decent riffs on that one. I had pretty big hopes for "Hellfire" but everytime I listen to it I get pissed off and shut it off, everytime they start playing a decent riff it gets drowned out by a torrent of blastbeats, so annoying.

I guess I just prefer the minimalist stuff like Burzum, Darkthrone, Judas Iscariot, Nargaroth, Kartharsis  or the more atmospheric stuff like Abigor, Summoning, Graveland  etc

I seee......you're soooo right dude, you're ok  :-D

wigrid play depressive black metal like shining, nyktalgia or burzum on hvis lyset tar oss, curse play fast ass-kicking bm quite similar to immortal

"z.b." stands for "zum Beispiel", that's german for  "for example"...i'm sorry, I should habe used "e.g." instead of that, but thats the force of habit

I definitely agree.  I personally think that Pelican is infinitely better, though you probably don't like them either.

Isis are definitely thoroughly overrated but Pelican are just crap. These days Humanfly are doing that Hydrahead sound better than anybody who's actually on Hydrahead.

Disagree bro, I think Pelican does a really interesting job of fusing post-rock sensibility with metal ingredients.  I'm not going sit here and tell you it's the most badass thing ever but it's definitely interesting music.  I really don't think that Humanfly does a better job.  Sure, they're sort of heavier, but I don't think it's as well written, arranged, or produced.  To each his own I suppose.

The only Isis album I've heard so far is Panopticon.  My beef with it is this, there are a couple of really good tracks but after the first two it really starts to drag.  It's just so miscellaneously heavy, swampy, and dull to me sometimes, and I like a lot of drone.  I like some of the stuff I've heard off of Oceanic better, so I'll probably check that out before writing them off.

Hey, Khar, Mekong Delta = \m/. I only have "The Music of Erich Zann" and "Kaleidoscope", but I really enjoy them, especially the former. Also, their horribly butchered English is really quality.

If I wanted post-rock sensibilities fused with metal, I would just listen to Agalloch.

Agalloch does in fact do that, they also do it very well.  It's a completely different animal though, I don't like Pelican for the same reasons that I like Agalloch.

Warhorse and Snowblood also do a good job of it, although admittedly in rather different ways to Pelican or Isis.
