Ok, basically, the gist is this. The laneway festival tickets go on sale today and for the first time, its going to be in Brisbane. Now I am itching to see Yo La Tengo and Camera Obscura, and The Sleepy Jackson and Ground Componants are pretty dang good as well, but I am not particularly certain they are 80 dollars good, considering I have a lot of tickets to buy this week, and a perennial lack of cash lately.

The problem is although I know there are four bands I am going to like there, I am completely ignorant of all the other bands that are playing. There aren't a whole lot, but basically, I am wondering if you kind folks can give me a run down of some of the bands I haven't heard anything by, just to give me a general idea.

Peter Bjorn & John
Youth Group (I know these guys had an annoying as shit single on the radio a while back, but are they any good?)
The Walkmen
Archie Bronson Outfit
Fionn Reagan

Basically, I kind of worried that I will spend all my money on these kinds of things, and wind up on the street, and if that is the case, I want to be convinced I got my moneys worth.

Youth Group's new album is pretty darn good (i've got a review somewhere), and 'Forever Young' ain't a bad single. They do hilarious blogs too. I'm just getting into The Walkmen, but i like what i'm hearing

at the last Laneway i touched Craig Finn and got called a 'strapping young lad' by Kelli from Architecture in Helsinki again, so i reckon its worth it

we (I) am going to be doing a ticket giveaway on www.liveguide.com.au soon, so stay tuned

there's also the Alley Festival, with The New Pornographers, The Grates (annoying single. nicest people in the world. great live shows) and like every Aussie band you should already have seen

I would say get the newest album, its the most consistantly fun album imo, if you are a dude who likes to dance, although Summer Sun is a pretty fun, relaxing album to listen to on a sunday afternoon. A girl at Skinnys was telling me they also wrote a soundtrack for this aquatic documentary that is apparently the greatest thing ever but I haven't ever heard it, but its called the sounds of the sounds of silence. Actually I am probably not the best expert on this because I haven't heard much of their older stuff apart from Ride the Tiger (Man, it is amazing what kind of bands a Dio kick will get you into) which is pretty decent, but not amazingly fantastic.

And as for the New Pornographers they are playing some kind of "Block Party" thing here in the valley with the Grates and some other usual suspects, and it sounds pretty awesome, but does Neko Case still tour with them? I heard somewhere that she doesn't always go on tour with them depending on her solo commitments, although if she is coming, and playing a solo show while shes here I am pretty much just going to crap my pants right now.

Also I am a little repulsed with myself that I baulked at the laneway festival for 80 bucks, and four bands I definatly like, but I am barely concerned that I will have to pay 75 to see Tenacious D live.

I think there is something wrong with me.

The Walkmen are pretty good! You have probably heard their song "We've Been Had" in a Saturn commercial a while ago. I did a google search for it and ... I got the QC forums.

(look at me! I'm working!)

Neko Case is with the New Pornographers. I hope she does solo shows. Look for a New Pornographers giveaway on Liveguide coming soon!

The Brisbane thing seems... eh. I love hanging out with the Grates, but having them headline over the Pornographers seems odd, and all the bands on the bill are solid... but you can see them everywhere

sweet people you should meet there: Chris from Expatriate, Susie from I heart Hiroshima

Yeah, honestly, as far as I'm concerned, its a 60 dollar Pornographers ticket, with a very good list of supports, for a show that goes all day. I am pretty dang anticipatory.

I actually decided against a Laneway ticket for the time being, seeing as I had to lend a friend 130 dollars for G3 tickets. Now there's some damn perspective.

Some people from the Grates messege board (shut up. they're cute) are trying to convince me to road trip up? down? to Brisbane, but I just don't see it.
Can't wait for the Pornographers or Laneway though. Wonder who'll be supporting them in Sydney....

I am kind of tempted to join upto the Grates message boards, but then I realized that I am cynical and bitter and belligerant, and their optimism and zest for life will probably kill me.

Nope, everything seems to be in order here.

there's alot of zest for life, alot of in-jokes, alot of nerdiness, and alot of talking like charadters in Dinosaur Comics

Hahaha
Also alot of talk about music... for such a mainstreamy band (they're mainstream now, right? i don't listen to mainstream radio) alot of the talk is about indie music.... Elliot Smith, Joanna Newsom, whatever. its another good place for Aussie music fans

also we had a picnic

um... i need to get into Yo La Tengo, the Walkmen, and all the other bands that aren't Camera Obscura. but i'm still going

The block party had better provide a full new pornographer's set and not a festival length set. They're the only act i'm bothing to attend for. IHH might do...

You lucky bastards in Sydney and Brisbane.  No Yo La Tengo down here in Melbourne.

However, I am ludicrously excited about seeing Camera Obscura.  There are enough other bands at the festival that I'm vaguely curious about, to justify me forking out $75 for a ticket basically on the promise of seeing one gorgeous band from Glasgow.

Hat, Youth Group have a bunch of great songs, and one shit and annoying one that's unfortunately become a big hit single.  I recommend blocking your ears while they're playing "Forever Young", and rocking the hell out when they're playing the likes of "Under the Underpass", "Shadowland", "Skeleton Jar", etc.  They put on a good show.

I'm kinda annoyed/surprised that the Grates are headlining
But if anyone has a bunch of Neutral Milk Hotel rarites sitting around, could you burn them, give them to their drummer, and say 'this is from Christian'?
'cause i'm, um, lazy

They're playing the Golden Plains festival, though, which I think is on at the Meredith site, with a heap of other good bands.

Laneway is definitely worth it imo.
